Wonderful singer. She was Canadian and born in Winnipeg Manitoba. My aunt knew her as a child and was a huge fan. She had one of the original LP records of her singer. As a child I broke it and I think broke my aunt's heart at the same time. I will never the look of utter sorrow on her face. That is over 60 years ago and my aunt is long gone but I still feel guilty about it. I hope she has forgiven me!

An amazing fact about this song is that it attempted to encapture the Brazilian rumba craze of the 1930s which extended into the early 1940s, round the time of this gorgeous recording...The dance craze itself was strangely enough named after a type of conventual habit traditionally worn by Belgian nuns...A deliciously expressive song by that beguiling Canadian-American vocalist, Deanna Durbin.

"The Beguine" was a dance fad, related to the Brazilian rumba, which swept Europe and North America in the 1930s and 1940s. Believe it or not "beguine" was originally the name of a nun's habit from Belgium. Deanna Durbin, a great Canadian actress and songbird, was made famous by this, her solo, BEGIN THE BEGUINE.

Despite Leonard Maltin, I consider 'Hers to Hold' to be Durbin's best film. It was also the best propaganda film of the war because the propaganda doesn't drive the story line. 'Say a Prayer for the Boys Over There' should have won the best song Oscar, and they would have been perfectly justified to at least nominate Edna Mae for Best Actress for this film.

It's a lovely, poignant song, but it was a very competitive year for songs that year. "You'll Never Know" won, but it could just as easily have gone to "That Old Black Magic," "Happiness Is Just a Thing Called Joe," "They're Either Too Young or Too Old," or "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," all songs that eventually went on to become standards which Deanna's song didn't.

@Paul Goodier That wasn't necessary. Every since Judy and Deanna appeared in their one short film together, people have taken sides as to who was better. The film itself "Every Sunday" (1936) was an audition as to who was better. I'm on team Judy, but it's not crime to take sides. No one's right, no one's wrong.

Really two different realms. Garland was more geared to 'pop' vocalization while Deanna Durbin gave a more operatic sound to the most mundane of songs. Deanna Durbin would have ruined "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."

lovely singing, Deanna, but that costume! that costume! you would have been SO MUCH BETTER in Kiss Me Kate, than stodgy, over-trilling what was her name, anyway? what a prideful FOOL you were to turn that down, Deanna!
@Susan10093
4 жыл бұрын
May I comment? Her costume in the film "Hers to Hold" is because her character works in a aircraft factory and she is singing to the other workers while they are on break. I don't think a costume say from "Can't Help Singing" would be appropriate in this setting. As for Kathryn Grayson, I believe she made a better "shrew" than Deanna would have.
@richardlee8495
4 жыл бұрын
@@Susan10093 sorry, don't know this pic. but that does explain the costume. that said, i thought it was interesting that MGM actually offered the part Kate to then-recently-retired-from-movies Deanna Durbin, before they settled on Grayson, and this was her last MGM musical i think Deanna would have been better.
