We we're unable to access the trunk with any of the buttons or the mechanical key. The rear seats do not fold down. This is the only way to get into the trunk in this unfortunate situation. The hole is plugged water tight after the repair and the license plate covers the plug.

@Draxindustries1 USA. One can find an address, but you'd have to submit a DMV report request which would include the vehicle's history along with the last address the car was registered to. To be fair though, if you're not a cop or someone who should have special access many states will not give you personal info of the owner, and many times not even the address. So, looking back at it, I will admit it's not plausible one would get much info without a lot of leg work. So, maybe it isn't that bad...

I work as a General Manager in the automotive industry for over 12 years now. I know Mercedes well. There is a key hole underneath, put the key in and turn hard, then push. It overrides the lock and your in. Also behind the seats there is also an emergency pull handle. I have never seen this done before in all the years I’ve been in the automotive industry which is over 21 years now lol.

Even if the car had to be broken into which locks trunks on Mercedes, he could a have used a scanner that could acsess the rear sam to actuate the rear trunk lid to open it. There are many different ways of opening this trunk even if the handle was broken. I'm a current technician for Mercedes and never have seen this done. But would only make sense if he did not have the key, or if the lock was busted

You can see it right there in the video. My car has a hidden one behind a plastic piece on the door handle. Most cars have some sort of key hole. Even if they lost the fob with the built-in key a good lock pick could do it I'm sure.

To everyone claiming what this person did was unnecessary, you’re very likely incorrect. If you know anything about Mercedes, you’d know that there is no access to the trunk through the rear seat back in this model. Pulling out the rear shelf won’t grant you access either. You’d also know that if the pneumatic system fails and the tumbler is seized or otherwise inoperable, this is the least destructive and fastest way in. These pneumatic systems are not the most reliable and are very prone to aging and therefore will eventually fail even if they’re never used at all. Since these are all old and only getting older and they’re very costly to repair, plus replacement parts are being phased out, most owners don’t pay to fix them. That’s fine so long as the tumbler works but once it fails or, the key blade is lost and can’t be replaced for some reason this is the only way in. Because the tumblers back there are only meant as an emergency back up and not the primary means of getting into the trunk, they’re not designed to be used constantly and will very often fail. It’s quite common for people unfamiliar with Mercedes to try and repair pneumatic issues such as this and usually wind up making the problem much worse. The linkage that connects the tumbler to the emergency release restricts access to the main latch. Because of this people often disconnect the linkage, forget to reconnect it, realize they can’t fix the pneumatic system themselves and then close the trunk and take it to a shop. This exact scenario has played out countless times and results in what you see in this video. Other model Mercedes have different construction and trunk latch systems so you can’t compare another model to this one.

@2stroke boys Nope. Without the ski bag option, which was extremely rare in the USA, there is no access to the trunk from inside the vehicle. Even if it did have the ski bag, you’d have to destroy the bag which is probably irreplaceable now and extremely expensive if it is still available. And once you’ve destroyed the exceedingly rare bag, you’ve now got to destroy further interior trim pieces as well as actual structural metal in the trunk lid to gain access to the latch. The seats do not fold down and even if you remove them there is no access to the trunk behind them. Just solid metal unibody and wiring conduit. Removing the rear shelf trim won’t get you anywhere either. To get access to the trunk through the rear shelf, you’ve got to remove the roof lining of the trunk, which requires access to the trunk. Then you’ve got to remove the speakers from the rear shelf which bolt in from the bottom inside the trunk. Just to humor all the doubters out there, let’s pretend that you did decide to cut through the unibody behind the seats or rear shelf, exactly what is it you expect to see or be able to do once you’ve made a hole? The entire trunk is lined with trim and covers blocking further access to anything. So now that you’ve cut your way through the unibody, you’ve now got to cut through the interior liners and carpeting. Let’s say you continue this fools errand and cut through the interior liners, I mean you’ve already destroyed part of the unibody so what’s some interior trim right? Great you’ve now got access to the inside of the trunk. So I ask again, what is it that you expect to be able to do from this point? This vehicle predates the requirements for an emergency release handle or button and the latch mechanism is covered by yet more trim and actual structural metal parts of the trunk lid. So now you’ve spent a ton of time and energy removing the rear seats and or shelf, you’ve cut through the unibody, you’ve cut through interior trim in the trunk, and if your main goal is to open the trunk, well you haven’t done that yet. This vehicle is a full size 4 door sedan. Because of this the trunk is very large and the area of the trunk lid where the latch sits is going to be too far away to access by reaching through the hole you’ve made regardless of where you’ve made it. I also don’t know of any cutters with enough reach to allow you to reach the area of the trunk lid where the latch resides. Remember it’s still covered by trim and metal that needs to be cut away first. So do you continue to cut away the unibody so that you can fit part of you’re body inside the trunk? I’m much taller then the average man and I know I cannot reach that area from the rear shelf let alone the seat backs so it’s extremely unlikely anyone else would be able to as well. Undeterred you press on, enlarging the hole such that you can fit the upper part of your body into the trunk so you can reach the area of the lid where the latch resides. You’ve come this far so why stop now. You cut through yet more interior trim pieces on the trunk lid and now, finally, you’ve got some access to the latch. However depending on what tools you’ve got you may need to cut away part of the metal skeleton of the trunk lid to actually open the latch. If for whatever reason you’ve now decided that the trunk lid trim and metal is a few cuts too far, you could cut open the plastic covering the striker and unbolt the striker to open the trunk. All of this can be avoided by drilling a single hole in a piece of plastic that can be easily repaired or replaced. Look I know how destructive and unnecessary this looks but I promise all the doubters out there that this is the fastest, easiest, cheapest, and least destructive way in. That panel is SMC so it will not rust, can be easily repaired, and even more easily replaced. Since it’s a minor exterior panel that is not complex they can be had from numerous aftermarket manufacturers or even junk yards. And despite what many people claim, it is not structural. Getting in through any other means whatsoever would require cutting or destroying much more expensive, rare, important, and possibly non repairable parts. This would be much harder, more time consuming, and expensive than necessary. The amount of time this took in the video is roughly accurate to the amount of time it takes in real life. Compared to any other amount of much more destructive work this is peanuts.

I remember when the first Ford Escorts came out. Occasionally people would lock themselves out of their cars so if they were local I'd go to where they were and open them. All it would take was a small wrench. You would unscrew the antenna mast and stick it through a small hole by the door handle. A little friction against the lock rod would lift the lock rod. Occasionally it would shock the customers as to how easy it was to break into their car.

@Craig Swinson I guess that is why people have to take it to brand specialist mechanics, lol. I imagine the owner wanted the job done on the cheap because brand specialists cost a lot more money.

@Sioax Aeriken he did this entirely wrong. You can access the emergency mails pull by removing three bolts from the back seat. You have nearly 50% access by removing those bolts.

@Ferrum Ignis In the description it says the hole is sealed, but not sure how. If it's just silicone, it could be cut by the thief, epoxy would basically make it like it was never damaged(in terms of strength). But regardless, I don't think thieves are going to know about opening the trunk in these old cars because he would have to go through the trouble of removing the plate, which is already a red flag because some thieves just want the plate to put on another vehicle for a crime. With that effort, might at well just cut up the door sheet metal to expose the mechanism and steal the car that way. (But most thieves are not going to go through that trouble and it makes too much noise.

@Sioax Aeriken Nice easy access for a car theif: take the plate off, remove the plug and he's in without smashing any windows or forcing a lock.

My guess is that the shop didn't have a locksmith on standby. Plus he said the mechanical key didn't work in the description so idk if picking it would work in the first place.

@Taylor Jackman he said the battery was dead. The jump will give you power to pop the trunk. Why would the cable be disconnected in the first place.

@Leury Goncalves you don't think people would have already tried that? Lmao. If the battery is disconnected you can't use a jump box to open the trunk. Open circuit doesn't work.

Put a jump pack on the battery post in the engine bay. The red cap next to the washer cap goes to the battery + in the trunk , the other cable goes to the bolt next to the coolant overflow tank.

When you accidentally locked the keys in the customers S500 Mercedes, ru the license plate drill a hole and yes it will allow you to open the trunk lid but it would’ve set the alarm off had the doors been locked, then disabled the whole car…

I mean I know he's just trolling. But if you ever get into this kind of situation you just need to disconnect the body module and send 12v to the trunk release, usually the only yellow wire on the kbm plug.

@The Lactation Station No there is no access from the back seats, they have a steel panel that seals the whole trunk area from the inside, you would have to cut a large hole to fit through. Also there is no emergency release on these cars they are too old, the emergency release was only mandated on cars around 2010 ish after this car was made.

What type/brand pliers are those? And to all the people complaining about drilling a hole, yes. There are other possible ways in but the time factor is the deciding factor, especially to the customer. He didn't do anything that can't be undone and the repair plus drill time was a lot cheaper than farting around for [two hours] trying to get in.

Maybe the back seat latch AND trunk release by the driver seat were not working? Seems strange, I gotta say
