What venue and city? That was outrageously high for 1968. I went to my first concert in St. Paul, 1973, with four bands (It's A Beautiful Day, Slyvester & The Hot Band had top billing). Tickets were under $5. Also, excellent live music has not always been prohibitively expensive. I spent dozens of nights at The Cabooze in Minneapolis watching top Chicago blues acts (Buddy Guy, Jr Wells, James Cotton, Willie Dixon, Freddie King, Mighty Joe Young, Luther Allison, Gatemouth Brown, The Nighthawks, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, many more, even Gregg Allman). You didn't buy a ticket, you paid a nominal cover charge, always affordable on my school bus driver salary. Another huge difference: some major acts would book three or four nights! You could see them twice and I'm glad I did because Freddie King died suddenly in 1976 but I caught him three times and it was so intense they couldn't clear the club at closing time because Freddie didn't want to quit. Anyhoo, another major difference: You didn't get warmups, the headline act played all night. Four (4) sets of 45 minutes was the standard from 9pm to 1am. A major rock concert was the exception as I soaked up everything I could. Lastly, covers were negligible, beers were still below a buck. Mondays was no cover for a live local band and two tap beers for a quarter. We had Lamont Cranston and Willie Murphy & The Bumblebees and tons of blues bands too. I caught Kim Wilson in his last show with Aces, Straights & Shuffles before he was to travel to Austin Texas and join Jimmie Vaughan's band. Stevie was unheard of til about 1983. Young folks don't get this affordable saturation anymore. In today's shows, I've noticed many acts, maybe four, and short sets, 20-30 minutes for openers, 45 for last band before headliner. You rarely get more than 90 minutes out of any band any more. I still get out to the clubs when the music is good enough. First Avenue runs about 5 clubs here (The Fine Line, Turf Club,. Seventh St Entry, The Palace in St. Paul) and you get a decent serving of music but prices are uniformly high to sky high now so you have to be very selective.

Interesting, my first concert was Rush in 82 and only set me back about $7 if memory serves. Did you get the Hendrix tickets through Ticketmaster? 😉 Edit: I found the ticket stub, it turns out Rush was $10 not 7. Still, that’s a pretty awesome price to see two bands. Rory Gallagher opened!

RE: Amps on stage... My rock cover band has gone no amps with IEMs. But we play small bars and are trying to reduce stage volume. BUT, if you play improvisational music, then losing the interaction between the (loud) amp on stage and the guitar to get notes to sing/feedback is a deal breaker for a lot of players.

Thank you Phil for the great content. I just can't get past why everyone gives Gibson a pass. Pretty much everyone does it. Of course, pretty much all of my guitar heroes play Gibson. I want the Gibson's that they play, but the Gibson management act like jerks, sue small builders and don't care about quality. I've seen to many crappy Gibson's. Why, if we expect a great steak from our local expensive steak house do people pay top dollar for Gibson's that are not great guitars. I know it won't change. I just can't get in board. Thanks for all you do! Have a great day!

Everyone has their opinions on Gibson. I don't understand the whole "they sue smaller companies" thing. They're far from the only company, they're defending their trademarks. Gibson just makes the news and people love to make a big deal about it. When other companies do it, no one knows or cares. At the same time Dean was being sued by Gibson, Dean went after a small single person boutique builder and even their customers for the exact same thing that they were being sued for. No one talks about that. Could you imagine if Gibson started going after people posting pictures of guitars that violate the Gibson trademark? Gibson couldn't get away with doing something like that but Dean did so they really don't get a pass on everything, a lot of things are scrutinized even more.

Another bowed neck trick that has worked for me. Loosen truss rod and clamp it to a straight edge/worktop. No cranking, slowly up the pressure. Loosen Truss rod regularly. Depending on the extent of the warp, add a small block to the 'high point'. Slowly slowly does it. Then, it should fall in. Good luck.

We did a show were amps and simplicity prevailed- the small acts that have to do their own setup- IEMs, samplers, modelers, racks of their own- it tends to all glitch out and slow down the set changes at a small venue where nobody cares about all that. And the smaller clubs PAs can't really handle all amp-less bands with the vocals and drums all slamming the PA- stuff gets lost. So I think the larger pro acts are a reasonable look into the future- but us hacks in the small local places are going to be solid with our solid gear live for a while.
@Craig52-zq1bt

True. Our band had 18" bass speakers along with the 4 way PA. Everything went through the PA. When we played casinos, which suck by the way, their PA is usually unequipped for drums and keys. Although, we did play a couple with fabulous Klipsch speakers and the sound was very good. Unfortunately, THEY run the board. So, if the board guy does not like you, he can kill your sound and piss everyone off toward your band. State Fairs are much better. BUT, the huge 1000 person clubs are gone, killed by the casinos. I miss those.

And you need the right work space etc. Unless you have multiple guitars and/or are a serious player, it probably doesn't make sense to drop $600 to set up your own guitars where you wont see the savings for several years.

I don't know why you'd want amps on stage. The truth is, you don't need them anymore. It wasn't always that way, but it is now- everything has gone from analog to digital. You used to need several racks full of gear for FoH too, but you don't now with digital. It's part of life. In the late 90's we only had analog and such- mics everywhere, feedback, noise, rack with a million flips and switches, and the drummer....God the drummer. Noise everywhere. Now, you plug a XLR into the digital mixer and you're set. Dead quiet. No noise. Sounds great. Crowd goes nuts. I don't understand why people are so resistant to this. The huge bands have been doing it for a long time.... it's just now that the average user can afford the product(s) and the technology is good enough to replicate.

I go to a lot of shows. One thing I can say, typically the more you pay, the better the show is because they have a large crew, a lot of pyrotechnics and you see very little problems. I've also seen some cheap shows where they had a small crew working and it can be a disaster when things go bad. A good sound man is worth his weight in gold because he can make or break a show. I once saw Eric Johnson and the sound man was not the best. His guitar was a little too low. It didn't ruin the show but with a better sound man it would have definitely been a lot better show.

I recently caught the great Robert Finley at The Dakota in Minneapolis. My table was stageside next to the guitar player. Only one ceiling speaker pointed towards my side of the floor and we were under multiple speakers facing the high buck folks directly in front of the stage. On the warmup band, I couldn't hear that well and was not getting anything out of his amp, which was right next to me but pointed straight forward. When Robert's guitar player came up, I mentioned this and asked could he tilt his amp or floor monitor our way. He ignored that of course. After the show, I ran into both guitar players and I mentioned this sound issue. The warmup guy told me he wasn't using any amp! And at least I did in fact hear that same amp during the main attraction. I'm an old guy and I rely on amplifiers on stage.

Also side note a 16ohm speaker has a lighter voice coil so it would accentuate more high end than a 8ohm speaker or a 4 ohm speaker. Seriously. 100% - You would NOT burn through tubes faster, because you are lowering the resistance. Technically your amp will last longer, b/c it will be making less TOTAL Output, Yes Higher Ohms = Less Wattage when maxed out. Distortion will not increase it will also clean up the signal...you have this backwards. Lowering the resistance going down from 16-8 or 8-4 will increase harmonic distortion. Just trying to help out! Love your content! I KNOW YOUR GEAR! hahaha! Cheers! Would love a Sticker for my guitar case! \m/

I enjoy your videos and the fact that you time stamp topics. Can you change the font color of the time stamp topics so they are easier to read?

Phil - Thx so much for the “magnifying glass lady” story. A wonderful and valuable life lesson about someone that set (reset?) your personal and professional baseline. In my teens I worked in retail for 3-4 years (mom-pop grocery store). Pretty sure I earned an MBA worth of business knowledge during that time. Thx again!

I won’t play without an amp. I have played on a silent stage but our amps were in isolation boxes and mic’d from there. We had good in ears and it was fine. I don’t prefer that but I still had my sound coming from my amp.

Yes, while a Squier Affinity strat can get the job done and its cheap and moddable, its still just a cheap instrument and while quality has increased with time, Its better to just buy a MIM or a MIA depending on model and such, and yes you should be still modding it to make it your instrument, now Gibson is a different story because the barrier is much higher and its easier to Buy an Epiphone on the cheap and see if you like the body shape and such before making an investment of that $2-3k.

One more comment on electric / acoustic. I have a Godin LGXT, a solid body with both mag pickups and a piezo in the bridge. Played through the acoustic simulator on my helix it is very convincing, at least on stage in the mix with the band. It won’t convince anyone that it’s a Martin, but it’s good enough t that I rarely need to carry a second guitar. And it’s a great electric. Also has a hex output for midi, but I don’t really use it much.

I'm 39 and my first concert was Linkin Park in 2002. Good timing for the discussion since they announced this week that they named a new singer and drummer, have an album on the way, and are going to tour again.

About not having a real amp&cab on stage is difficult but a necessary “evil”. I prefer real amp&cab but learnt over the last 6-years there are options for not using a real amp&cab. I have been using modellers/sims for the last couple of years and my first option is to have a small active cab if possible, else just get used to inner-ear-monitoring (IEM). What I have learnt with the modelling setup is that it is really a lot easier and faster to get my system going at a live gig (not even mentioning that I travel a lot “lighter”!). Compared to a traditional rig where you have to run a lot of cables, getting the mike placement right on the cab, making sure all my pedals are all still on the same settings (pot adjustments) ….getting rid of unwanted noise….and this is if you use one amp & cab. What if you want to use two/three amps&cabs!! I use a DAW (MainStage) on my MacBook with an audio interface with 2 sets of stereo outputs (4-channel), a small 40x40w stereo active cab, a midi foot controller - that is it! . On my audio interface the one set of stereo outputs goes to my small active cab and the second set of stereo outputs will got to FOH. I set up these outputs separately in my DaW. The output channels to FOH is the only setting that needs some tweaking when I get to a gig. This way, if I cannot have the active cab on stage, then I only use the “FOH” outputs. The rest all still stay the same. In fact my rig setup in the DAW consists of 3 different amps&cabs with seamless switching between them. This rig can even do synced switching (via midi from stage production system or tracks….) if the gig requires it. But, I still prefer playing through a REAL Amp & cab - but nowadays that is mainly for studio work. And that is why I predict that in the future, real amps and cabs will be limited to the studio…..my opinion though. If interested I will share my rig setup.

Concerts: In 1990s in school at U of Utah in Salt Lake when the Stones came through the USA. They played at the U stadium and the U was required to sell a portion of any event tickes to students at a cheap price. IIRC it was less than $10, unsure exact amount. Nosebleed seats but great show, huge dragon over the stage breathing fire.

The magnifying glass lady: the bottom line is she couldn't afford a $2,000 guitar, and therefore she shouldn't be buying it. It's nice that her son was talented & it's nice that her friend asked you to help, but at the end of the day she couldn't afford it and that's not your problem. If you absorb everybody else's problems, you'll be a nice guy who goes out of business.

TBH, Guitar Center should really hire Phillip as CEO if they wanted to truely save the company. Seriously. Stop hiring idiots with experience only in other areas (like food and cars) already and hire guys who actually KNOW the instrument business. Its always like "Yeah this CEO took Pepsi to the top!!! Lets hire him to sell guitars!"!!" Moronic.

I worked in an auto restoration Shop for à long time and sanhed and polished alot of stainless trim. pieces.if your working stanless.i would sand from1000 grt or coarserall the way to 3000 or 5000 grit.but when your done with 1000 and o to 1200 or 1500 dont go to the next grip until all the 1000 grip s ratches ar out.and so on.from.1500 to 2000, 2500.th3n 3000 and when you get to 5000 it's damn near polished.and frets could probably be hand polished with a microfiber and some rouge or even mother brand métal polis at that point. We mostly worded on classic Ferraris that won alot of awards.use powdered graphite as a guidecoat between gris to make surr all 1500 grip scratches are out before standing with 2000..for example..

I'm lucky to have an iconic amp... a re-issue Marshall JTM45 with matching 4x12 cab hand wired with identical parts to the very first one made my Jim and Terry Marshall... but none the less killer (I assume). Rarely get to truly put it through its paces... but it sure looks cool in the room! 😎🔈🎸🤘

It is not really the bands that drive the prices up, it is MOJO cq Ticketmaster ( same company) who drive up the prices, and they can do that because they have a monopoly . When we can have 3 day events with many great bands , camping included at the price of 1 too band concert , the only difference is , it is not organized by MOJO, then it is clear what drives the prizes: just MOJo/Ticketmaster …

Live bands now use DAW backing tracks as part of the set up. It allows them to put in backing vocals, choirs etc & orchestral pieces, synths etc. The performers also use in ear monitors & play to what's fed into their ears. The mixing engineer now controls all of this, instead of just doing eq & levels. It's all gone digital & modern technology has taken over, rather than the old raw analogue set up. That's why you now perceive they sound better & they sound more like the original recording. That original recording, or part of it, is being played.

RE: repair techs: I do my own lutherie stuff, never formal trained. Have done neck resets ( including conversions to bolt on in vintage instrument restorations), re-frets electronics, full setups and lots more. I was in GC yesterday in my town and they did not have a repair tech. Bunch of broken stuff, including a LP missing a headstock. Someone asked me if I wanted a job doing it, I just laughed. Stated I would do that MAYBE as a contractor but NEVER as an employee. I set my own fees, schedule and delivery of work product. They lost interest right away.....;)

My first gig in 1987: Level42! My granny payed for the ticket (like $30,-). I did little chores around her house for like 7 months! Dear granny! She also took my brother to see Madonna: both of them dressed up as ‘virgins’... 😄 (Freekin’ Omar Hakim and Victor Bailey on drums and bass!!)

I still go see shows pretty often and in clubs 300-1500 people, at least with indie/punk bands, people are still using amps. however 99% of them are 1x12 combos.
