I have a personal dream setup that I am currently saving up to build, mostly for personal multi media/mixed media projects, and a decently powerful, open source (software and hardware) VR/AR headset is one of the main elements of that setup! I’ve only used my family’s Quest 2 a few times for VR Chat, but I REALLY want to own a headset of my own! I agree with everything in this video, and you both are so inspiring for someone like me who is STILL looking for a VR headset! I hope whatever the future holds, that VR can still be the computing system of the future! As much as I tend to get nervous about big corporations owning and running so many things, I too don’t want Meta to pull the plug on everything, and keep hindering their good progress with bad decisions! I hope they do see this video or at least get the message that they need to (and still can) build a safe, welcoming, open source, and community-first “metaverse” or something similar! I’d honestly love to occasionally use AR glasses to play AR games and help make my day a bit more interactive! But I’d be over the freaking moon if I can use those same glasses to make a custom, silly, interactive multimedia world out of my own environment, and using my own custom art, animation, videos, and more! TL;DR: Thrill, Phia, you two are helping me stay motivated and up to date on VR and similar tech, and I’m so excited for when I finally can own a VR/AR headset, (currently, I have my eyes set on the NREAL glasses. But I’d love a headset for full immersive experiences!) and I hope this medium can live on! Not just for games, but I really want to both see, and make, some VR, and AR movies! I just want to say thank you for keeping the spirit of VR and the like, alive! I’m rooting for you and all of VR and AR! Not just for my sake or your sake, but everyone!!! In your own words: WE R VR!

Zucc's focus on corporate VR doesn't make sense. VR main core audience is gamers. No one in the right mind would wear a VR headset just to sit in a virtual office 9-5. Sure, it enables 3D collaboration (useful for 3D modeling related), but there's a reason why smartphone/any flat screen are still the preferred way for communication. You don't even need to wear anything to communicate. This feels the same as how wrong Microsoft was about tablet being the future, and Windows 8 flopped because of it. IDK who Zucc is trying to please with his vision of the metaverse, but this is just out of touch and ridiculously absurd. If he wants to get more people in VR, he should've released Pro and Quest 3 at the same time, and make sure that people know what they are for; one is for Enterprise, and another is for gamers or casual users. Releasing Pro separately from Quest 3 hurts VR because it creates confusion among the general public.

What I hate about Meta's "Metaverse" is that people in my environment hear about it and think it is synonymous with VR. And it is really hurting. I used to have people over and tell them "Want to try VR" and some would say "oh, yeah, I always wanted to try that" or some others have not heard of it and both were usually happy about the experience afterward. These days people will say "oh, is that the Metaverse thing that's apparently so bad?" and come in with a negative opinion of it, and that usually impacts their play because they will try to find "bad things" (framerate stutters, low resolution or low texture quality) and inflate them to "this is horrible, I could never spend my working day in this". The overall opinion is now negative instead of the wonder I would usually see. Mark, please let this ecosystem go into the future dynamically and with the right hardware and don't force the future you see onto hardware that's not quite there yet. Also, don't lock this ecosystem down to be yours, because that will sink the VR industry, because Meta alone cannot do the necessary technology jumps to make VR truely great and maybe even indistinguishable from the real world.

Yea, I first tried VR and got hooked. and I love what the Quest 2 is capable of, I've tried it with PCVR, and as a standalone. I don't have a spare room I can dedicate to VR so it is nice when everything I need is I the headset. Just move some furniture and boom, a VR session is created. I hate the idea of having to set up extra parts to use an Index, or a Vive, especially because I want to bring VR everywhere, because I have access to huge spaces at work camp, and the hotel that are 5 to 10 times larger than anything I have at home. And all I could do is bring just the headset, and maybe a gaming laptop or PS5(for the PSVR2). I haven't gone in and bought one yet and the issues with Meta are partly why, I don't want a $500 paperweight because the headset will never again be able to connect and log in. the PICO 4 will likely be banned in my country when it's parent company TikTok is banned. Which leaves the Vive Focus 3 as the last standalone headset left. The most expensive VR set and the least supported, low selection of games. Perhaps with enough elbow grease we can "hack" the quest 2 to work without Meta or any login sever and it can be kept out of the LANDFILL after meta kills itself.

Witnessing the recent developments of VR especially under Meta has been the equivalent of being at a luxurious dinner party. Most of you got to the party early and at the table. You are LOVING what they're bringing out from the kitchen. You've seen a few big dishes come out and you're like "This is so awesome! They're still coming out with more plates! What's next?" But then Mark is there, barely paying attention to the dishes being set down. He's got this cupcake that somehow got off to the corner of the room. Now look, hardly if any of the guests at the table have been saying they want desert. At least not now. What they got is what they're loving, and there are still some seats to be filled at that table. This dinner party is impressive and it can be a whole lot more! Mark WANTS that cupcake though, but not for himself. He wants YOU to want it. He doesn't care if he's hired brilliant chefs and cooks. He doesn't care that people got into this party for reasons completely outside eating a cupcake. And now it seems like half that other food we were hoping for ain't coming. He doesn't care that you came. That you've been around. Just that he gets everyone to accept the damn cupcake, especially the people who haven't been caring about the dishes so much to begin with.

@@maxjames00077 No where close to the sidelines, I own both the CV1 and Quest 2, thousands of hours in VR, what he says is true. Meta does great in sales, the entry price is fantastic, but they hoover up all the talent around them, and then no games get made. Retention is horrible, besides beat saber, or VRchat, theres very few reasons to put it on, it becomes a $400 paper weight. The issue is because most players ARE using the quest 2, most games have to be on the oculus store to have a chance at succeeding, with profit sharing with meta taking %30, similar to steam, but only for a fraction of the audience, most dont make it, or arent profitable enough comparatively to steam. I've gone years without putting the CV1 on, because there's just nothing to do. No one expects them to be perfect, but they arent doing very well for as large as they are. they can make money off it for sure, but for Mark being as big into vr as he is, he sure shoots himself in the foot a lot. I feel the exact same way. I was an early adaptor, I absolutely loved it in 2016/2017. Whenever someone came over family or friends I would always show off VR and generally people were blown away. I was the core user and probably inspired several people to buy a headset. If content continued I would have no issue spending an insane amount of money to support it. But the content quickly dried up and now I barely play anything. The new Quest Pro was pretty much the last straw for me. A new VR headset dedicated to business users, wtf?? Zuck sees VR as the next social media platform. I don't see the issue of VR always being a niche part of the market. Spend the time and money making it more immersive, better graphics, innovate, make it fun. Instead we get to have meetings in the metaverse. I've had almost every headset, every top VR game, probably two years saying how great VR was, and spent 1000's of dollars. I don't regret any of that but I definitely feel abandoned.

I don't remember the last time I played a non-PC VR game in my Quest. Honestly. Why should I (or anybody)? When I want to relax in VR I want THE best experience possible, period. Therefore I switch my PC on, I let it render the top-notch picture of my favourite game and then stream it to my VR using VirtualDesktop or Air Link. Why? Because it looks and feels fantastic! And because anything below that simply sucks. And VR is not just for games, it has a huge potential for productivity too. Man... Meta's approach is soooooo wrong here! Who needs a virtual copy of the real world? Why? What for? We need new features and new possibilities, not the same ones again! Doing otherwise inevitably poses the question: why do it in VR if I can equally (if not better) do it in the real world without it? Do you REALLY want people to put it this way? Because they do. What I personally needed for my productivity from home? An unlimited virtual smart whiteboard. I still need it big time! The proper one, which doesn't exist in reality. I can describe it in minute details, but it will be too much for a simple comment. Instead, I'd just put it this way -- I'm still looking and waiting. P.s. There is a reason why vorpX is so popular year after year after year.

@@simpson6700 Have you played the "Lone Echo"? If you had, then you probably remember how small your hands and body in general were. That's why. The world-scale lets you increase the scale of your virtual body. It also helps to reduce motion sickness.

No, I’d say the execution is also a part of the problem. You may have a different standard for fidelity in video games, but gamers like myself and my friends and siblings all look at Horizon, Rec Room, Zenith, VR Chat, etc. as looking “cheap” or it’s still in alpha development. I was excited for Zenith especially, ThrillSeeker said it was going to change VR forever and everyone would be playing, now the game is dead and the gameplay is still trash… It’s like a lot of VR titles want to hurry and put something together using Unreal Engine blueprints and sell the games at full price, make their millions and vanish. It’s frustrating and greedy. I’m waiting for some other CEO to take a pass at the metaverse because this just isn’t it.

@@Top_Cheeze Iron rebellion is exactly like that mecha battle, but it takes time to get used to the controls. I had my problems and stopped it after testing it and goofing around for 10 minutes. Being able to use the controls by instinct will take some time. You´re using a mecha after all. I still think it will be easier than mech warrior, which is a normal non-VR game. Iron rebellion works, and it works fine, but the controls still need their breakthrough like almost every VR game. Games I played with controls that are just feeling right are Rush, Skyworld, and (most of the time) To The Top, but none of these games will ever become mainstream. We will get to that point, someday we will have our industry changing algorithm for VR controls. Just as many games prior gave new ideas and sometimes whole new genres of games.

This is So accurate and it's sad. I know of so many Quest 2's laying around collecting dust either because of the account issues or because there's simply no new games to play. Personally I ended up migrating to SteamVR because there isn't much of interest to play natively. This ultimately resulted in me buying another headset (Pico 4) and leaving Meta's ecosystem entirely.

Even I have seen first hand people I know buy a Quest 2 just to get that VR experience just to fall out of it a month or two later. Meta definitely needs to do more to make the entire industry more people focused instead of industry focused. Always love your content and looking forward to seeing more in the future! ❤️

"The core" as you've described it is what made me fall in love with vr in the first place. Back when the oculus dk2 launched, I had already been following the VR dev scene closely, and was obsessed with at least trying it out, to the point that I ended up making my own pcvr cardboard headset before even trinus and vridge were a thing. I had splashtop and freepie, and was using the OSVR drivers so I could send the 3dof data there. Eventually psmoveservice was acceptable and I made my own 6dof room-scale jank vr and started my journey through vrchat. And I really hope that spirit of "Make, share, enjoy" stays with us as the industry grows, because none of what I talked about would have been possible if it wasn't for all the people that were obsessed with VR in exactly the same way. Thanks to the community, and thank you Thrill for giving us a louder voice.

Metaverse is a dumb idea. It is a scam akin to NFT pictures. Making people stake real money for fake land or a fake house. I would honestly rather meta go down than to have the cyberpunk dystopia that a successful metaverse would amount to. I just want good VR games. If we can't have that, then the world is probabaly better off with a hard reset of the VR industry. It's like you said, every 20 years, someone takes a shot at VR. If meta insists on selling a metaverse rather than just selling games, I want meta to crash and burn. Hopefully in 10 or 20 years, when ppl try to make VR work again, they will learn from meta's example and stop trying to make a corporate owned virtual feifdom.

Probably the single biggest problem is combining the exclusivity of software and hardware for a deep complex problem in creating an exclusive ecosystem. It means that the future is more open source in hardware that we imagine and only cloud computing can provide a partial solution. Though the cloud is the dominant medium for internectivity it may perhaps transform to a decentralized open source service running on A.I smart contracts. This scares to death big tech companies because of the lost of data and value control for stock performance but it's the future.

Thank you for being spot on in all points. I am 71 years old with a 64 year passion of toys, tech and traveling, My love of VR started 30+ years ago with unavailable, bulky, outrageously expensive experimental and military heads up displays. Fast forward to multiple SIGGRAPH shows and prototypes to the launch of the first Oculus which, for its day, was an amazing leap forward (I owned an Apple Lisa and the first Mac fish tank computer). As much as I was impressed with how far VR had come looking through a screen door was not a compelling immersion experience. With the launch of Oculus Quest 2 I decided to test the waters. I purchased a unit then 2 weeks later I purchased 10 more for my spa and wellness center in Bali to setup VR Salon for adults and education and gaming for kids. It was/is a game changer in almost every respect. I was aware when Facebook acquired Oculus and despite that - and I do mean despite - I went ahead and set them up in the captive Facebook universe - using VPN routers. All of which brings me to thank you for the very much needed "The Emperor Has No Clothes" honest and, to many, painfully obvious review of the slow motion Meta train wreck and missteps. With Pico launching (which we can get in Asia - sorry US) and Pimax Crystal (both of which I am preparing to purchase) I think VR will be fine and will survive the Meta Pandemic if in fact it occurs.

I later in the day went to go verify on my PC what my login info was, and went back onto the Quest and only then realized it wasn't telling me my password was wrong it was telling me I had to update the firmware to even fucking log in to the headset. Yes maybe in a couple of years the focus on "mainstream" might be a viable strategy. But at the moment (and probably even then) you should not forget about your strongest advocates and the people who are building alongside you. There is so much more to gain in the long run when everyone works together to create the best version of VR possible. With the widest variety of games. The greatest experiences for meetings. And the best virtual desktop setups possible. A lot of things will have a space in this new world. And I personally suggest we should welcome them all - and not let anyone behind.

No matter how good the technology gets, if there are only 1-3 good games to play on it, no one is going to get into it except early adopters. I was a dev for occulus in the early days. The early adopters was simulators.. There was an entire community of people about 600k strong worked hard to bring VR to flight sims. There was very little demand for VR in anything else by comparison. We worked hard to eliminate all the mini hurdles on the software side and had everything ready but needed a hardware change. Occulus was all set to use the next generation of screen that would allow simulators to be able to read text in the cockpits. We needed this if we were going to abondon our homebuilt simulators. Then FB jumped in and offer 1 billion dollars for the company. They stopped the screen upgrade from happening and that was that.. Most of us just abondoned the Occulus project and went to WMR. Turned out to be the best thing for us because there was a whole host of devices we could choose from and the one with the hi-rez screen was the obvious choice. I understood why they wanted to go toward a more game dev situation but using a better screen was only a few more dollars per unit. Thre was a ton of other issues and the biggest is people just do not trust Mark. This was his pet project and he was going to treat it that way. That was very clear.. The need for Facebook login for your device was very concerning on a cloud based device like this. Think about it, I have had 3 Facebook acounts banned and during the last election cycle my account was suspended 3 times. When the election was over I stopped getting suspended. Everyone I know goes to FB jail on a regular basis. We are not criminals, we are only guilty of wrong think. The most recent time I was suspended was for posting a screen shot of James Franco in Ballad of Buster Scruggs. It was the 2nd hanging scene as the guy next to him was crying and James looks to him and says, "First Time". This was just a meme laughing at Kanye for crying about getting banned from social media for something he said. The next thing I know I am being given all this suicide prevention information and the cops at my door doing a welfare check. That is a little much dont you think? Clearly this was a joke! That took things to far. Luckily I live in a small town and know all 8 of our cops really well so they came laughing because they know me just as well. Microsoft will win this and Mark is the reason why! Think about it, Mark can just ban your account at any given time and all the intellectual property you purchased is gone... You may not live in a circle that is targeted but more than half of us do! Way more than half! Look at a map of conservative vs liberal.. Then entire nation is red with several blue dots across the country. My FB, Gab, Twitter, KZitem, Twitch, and etc are not cross branded.. No way in hell, This is how the majority of the people have to live in this country because of people exactly like Mark. I say something on one and get banned on them all? No thank you! You may not live like this but so many people do. You are prolly starting to think I am some horrible troll but you would be wrong. Facebook and Twitter(not anymore) is the only places I get into trouble on a regular basis. Mark and Dorsey taught me not to enjoy thier platforms or rely on them and that is what they get. Most of the time I am on Gab. I sure in the hell do not buy Apple products. You can not do what the left does to people and expect them to open their wallet. The irony of course is the largest consumer base is the exact one they attack.

I always got furious when Mr. Zuckerberg was portrayed in the media as some kind of genius. He wasn´t. He just had one good idea. Like there are millions of. Just the statistics were on his side and he was one of the few whose business idea went through the roof. The investors did the rest. Facebook was never technically something special. It was just one of the first. And as with all of these platforms, the one with the biggest user base wins and it is incredibly hard to get it off the throne. I find it unbelievable that anyone is suprised that Meta is creating such a bad product. What else have they ever done? They never produced anything and made money by stealing data. They bought all companies that they found interesting and had these people work for them. I am not even slightly suprised that Meta has gone the way it has.
