Hypothesis on why people cycle from TCGs: Honeymoon phase ends and… For those who thought they could make money in cardboard :turns out it’s work to sell things at a profit. For those who love the cards: turns out it’s work to find a place to play/consistently show up to play in person.

I feel that. Didn't buy last set of fab just cause of finances. Planning on this next set, but i havent played in like a year because my place nearby stopped and I live in an active hub. But that shop worked with my schedule, and now I need to work around my schedule again. I love the game. But it is work to participate in something that means showing up and dedicating several hours.

On the subject of your analytics, I'll tell you when I found your channel and why I've stuck around so far (it isn't because I'm invested in cardboard). I found your channel during the D&D OGL drama back in January because you did touch on the subject a few times. I've stuck around for two (two and a half?) reasons. 1. Because you are an excellent source of news about what's going on with Hasbro/Wizards and I'm low-key hate watching to see if Cox and/or Williams get their comeuppance. 2. Because I used to play a lot of MtG back in the day and your content triggers some nostalgia for days gone by. Yes, you talk about collecting and finance as opposed to actual play, but I find the finance dynamics surrounding the industry fascinating. Your take on it all is both entertaining and educational and (who knows?) maybe I'll put that education to use one day. I appreciate what you're doing here, Rudy. I'll probably never be a patron because I'm such a casual viewer, but I might buy some t-shirts some day. Keep it up.

Hey Rudy, about the thing where collectors seem to leave after 2-3 years. I haven't seen it in data, but I've noticed it over and over. KZitemrs give up about 2 years and allot of people who sell their entire collections have only been collecting for about 2 years. I have figured over the years that the average collectors simply loses interest after 2 years and gives up. Infact I thought after 2 years I would be done with both Rudy and Pokemon, but it's been over 7 years now!

I find it odd that people buy TCG product with the sole intention of making money. You never lose when you’re buying items because you genuinely like the product and want it for yourself. Rudy is a unique. He was passionate about Magic/art etc, before turning it into what he has today. If people took a step back and just enjoyed the TCGs and weren’t looking for “the next big thing”, they’d save themselves a lot of headache. It’s just so weird hearing about people who decided Magic and Pokemon were going to somehow make them a millionaire. Rudy is an outlier. Enjoy the damn hobby people.

I'm just a little fish in this pond, but in my time collecting/"investing" I've noticed trends among people who get turnt and burnt from the hobby, usually the following: -They had mismanaged expectations about their ability to monetize the hobby, whether it be flipping singles and/or sealed product and/or content creation -They were not realistic about the demand for capital when starting a sustainable business -They simply were not patient, and entertained too many dreams and anecdotes of folks getting rich overnight or even becoming profitable in the first 2-3 years. -They don't actually enjoy the product or collecting it. Taking a 50% loss on that one shitty set doesn't feel so bad if you still get that warm fuzzy feeling when you pick it up and hold it. I'm not a proprietor of a small business, nor do I "flip" any product, but what little come-ups I've had throughout my long term buy-and-hold pattern have been products of grabbing hot items at retail price and simply sitting and waiting. You know what the difference is between that Gym Challenge box back then and the same box now? 23 years. Time is the multiplier that I feel is chronically understated among new collectors and investors in the hobby.

8:20 Well, on my last Thanksgiving-Christmas holiday I was at the table and they said _"So, what you've been up to, Tim?"_ And I said _"I-I . . . have been cardboard investing."_ _"What? Are you buying those Magic the Gathering cards? I've seen it in the news."_ They asked. _"No, not really, I've been investing in Flesh & Blood and Metazoo . . ."_ _"What the f- is that, son?"_ They demanded. _"Well, it's like Magic, except it was created only a couple of years ago, through a Kickstarter campaign . . ."_ At this point I was overwhelmed by a barrage of whistling, forceful exhaling, rapping of fingers on the table: _"A Huwat? Sounds a lot like a scam to me, sonny." "What the hell were you thinking?" "Were you born yesterday??" "Why on Earth would you do that?!?"_ . . . at which point my recoiling, shrunken figure could manage only, looking at the floor, to blurt out in a tiny voice _". . . a popular cardboard influencer on the internet convinced me it was a good idea to go all in . . ."_ - then I retreated to a corner, and everyone spent the rest of the evening just pointing at me and laughing. Selling the Bundles mat + box + promo card he is making more 30-50% profit than your local store. The reason the fab boxes are so cheap in North America is because he is undercutting all other stores. He is complaining about a problem he caused. All other stores are forced to lower there prices to be able to move the product of their shelves because he his other assets including stocks and real estate are tanking and he needs more cash flow. be greedy when other are fearful. what a joke lmao

Without knowing his reasons, (or anything about his patreon) I would assume he set the caps based on quantity of product divided by prospective customers. If you remember, a few years back, there was a product he sold, but got cut short on supply, and had to hustle deals with distributors to cover his orders, and created a severe ripple in the market.

I think some people are more in touch with their touchy feely side and when they first start out in something they're passionate about it, obsessed, creepy attached to it. Eventually up to 3 years later it doesn't do a something they wanted, they get angry, they get toxic, they make a huge stink and they leave for the next thing. With algorithms tweaking your recommended section based on a one off video you watched eventually your video doesn't show up anymore it helps make a smoother transition into the next thing. Some people are sticks in the mud that downloaded newpipe get your content in their feed chronologically and tune in every so often for years. Those people short of actually dying are in it for the long haul there might have been some passion at one point, they might be upset some times but they for the most part are stable... personality wise anyways speaking from experience life has been a rollercoaster of ups and crushing downs.

Ruby is definitely the problem. I remember when he printed 3.3 trillion $ in 2020 and gave it out to ppl locked in their homes to spend. It's all his fault the markets went volatile and interest rates and inflation skyrocketed. Before Rudy we got 1 or 2 foils a box and dollar menus were real 😂😂
