To have someone reacting to a metal song in such a geniuine way is so damn refreshing. Not everything has to be catered to the audience, having a discussion with someone with different tastes in music and still be open minded and respectful is the way to go. In the case of a band like Death (or, for example, Voivod), you need to get used to the songs, memorize them. And over time, you start to love them very much. But the first time it's pretty savage. And love these even more than casual songs!

Death fan here. I relate with you on this song (and most of the Perseverance album) : it's amazing parts often badly assembled in quite messy structures and too much forced or abrupt transitions. The exact opposite from Symbolic which is my favorite album of all time. You definitely could do "Symbolic", "Without Judgement", "Crystal Mountain" from the Symbolic album. And the vocals are much better too. I also highly recommend the Human album, which is probably my second favorite of all time haha!

Completely agree! A lot of the songs are like this on this album, but this one is particularly messy. Symbolic was a much more a coherent album, but in general, he retained a similar way of abruptly switching between ideas. Still, I think it's all a part of the charm of his music.

Death and Chuck where pioneers and amazing artists which turned prog and techdeath into the state it is today. The Sound of Perseverance is the most proggy album from Death and you can hear, that Chuck wanted to experiment his style of music. But i can see why Judson doesn't like the song, maybe the song "Story to Tell" would've been a better pick from the album, because it keeps it's tempo pretty constant through the entire song. Death has a huge place in my heart of music, introduced me to the genre i enjoy the most to this day and most of his albums just work for me, when i don't know what else i could listen to.

I know this will be a very unpopular opinion, but this album is my least favorite of the Death albums. I listened to A LOT of Death for a few years and after listening to this album, I kind of get bored with the almost unnecessary repetitiveness of this album in particular. Don't get me wrong, the sheer technicality is awesome, but even this song feels like it would have been better if it were a few minutes shorter. I don't feel as though the sections really build on themselves or evolve, its like 5 different pieces that are just interchanged multiple times through out each song. I also prefer Chuck's vocal style on the previous albums. Glad you are reacting to Death though, hopefully you do some songs off of "Symbolic" or "Individual Thought Patterns."

I think his criticism for this song is fair. I LOVE Death but this album was not my favorite when it came out. It feels like a lot of the riffs just don't go together. Play something from "Symbolic" or "Human". It was interesting that he wanted the song to end after the solo. Death's song structure is unique. It basically all repeats after the solo so if he didn't like the first half at all, he won't like the rest. I noticed that too with this album. It's basically an ABCAB song structure.
