Yeah, it's amazing to see how the've transformed into a completely new type of music. They decided that simply singing about killing people with a blunt object wasn't enough, they needed something more impactful, something more agressive in the music itself. That's why the instrumentals is the most agressive part of the album, while Stefan is simply rapping about grabbing his crotch, losing all his money in Las Vegas after a game of blackjack and that one time he and his brother got lost in the local mall.

I saw MC Ride at a grocery store in Sacramento yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually because “TOO MANY HOES IN MY MOTHAFUCKING MEAL” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that makes any sense. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yelling really loudly.

Do you like Death Grips? Their early work was a little too...electronic for my tastes. But when Exmilitary came out in 2010, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a rough, jagged sound and a new sheen of disdainful cynicism that really gives the songs a big boost. In 2012, they released this, The Money Store, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hacker", a song so N O I D E D that most people don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, cause it's not just about the moment all shit breaks loose, and all there is left to do is riot, but it's also about how that Death Grips has made an impact on the game and no longer can be ignored! HEY PAUL!

In my opinion, you can't just give something one listen and truly decide whether or not it's good especially if you're unsure about it. I'm a big progressive metal guy so when I picked this album up for the first time I hated it. I gave it a second go since I knew sort of what to expect and I'd safely say this is one of my favorite albums to date. Moral of the story: Give it a chance. Don't listen to 10 seconds and say it sucks right away.

I agree! I feel like often when I listen to a new album, especially one as challenging as this, the first listen or two acquaints me with the sort of 'sound' the artist is going for, and only when I'm in the mindset to immerse myself in that sound later on do I come to fully appreciate the album. It's very rewarding.

I had always heard about death Grips cause I've been watching ND since '10 but I always ignored them as being just noise, and I was never that into rap. After delving into hip hop at the beginning of this year and obsessing over Run the Jewels 2 and To Pimp a Butterfly, I finally listening to Get Got and I've Seen Footage. I liked them but the rest of the money store was so repelling to my ears. It finally took seeing Death Grips live at FYF to finally understand what their motif is. I listened to money store on repeat for a week after and everything Anthony says is true. It's so rewarding once you finally wade thru all the sludge and aggression. Every new listen reveals something new. It's such a complex album that it takes a certain amount of patience and mindfulness to see what's happening. I'm sure this album will go down in independent music history.

huh, I took a similar journey with Death Grips. First I heard TND gave this album a 10 I listened to Get Got and I just didn't understand as I didn't like rap at all back then and had little to no experience with such abrasive music. Then a few years later when he reviewed RTJ2 I decided to give rap another chance and something just clicked, I fucking loved it. Then went back through all the rap albums I'd missed on the Loved List and finally got around to revisiting The Money Store, I think the first one I checked out was I've Seen Footage, the rest is history. Now I own every one of their albums (minus Exmilitary cus I cant find it :(

This fucking album. Insane. It's harder and more excessive than anything I've ever heard. I've heard heavier and darker music but nothing so... manic yet exhilarating in it's delivery. So many artists have "shocking" music but most of the time it's an unconvincing facade which actually so untruthfully hits upon gore or "evilness" without really portraying any true menace at all. The character that's portrayed by MC Ride accompanied by the music underscoring really fleshes out the mindset of this very human villain.

Every single noise is off-kilter. Every beat and bass rumble vibrates with gravity and menace. This doesn't try to convince you of its heaviness or darkness... These guys were, and still are, on some next-level shit. I certainly don't understand all of their musings and imagery and artistic decisions, and I don't know if any of us will for a few years. But this group was a truly groundbreaking group. They had a sound that could have only been forged in the late-aughts and early-2010s. This group will seriously go down as one of this generation's most confounding, divisive, and revolutionary musical acts. I'll be loving these guys for a long time.

I thought Death Grips were *incredibly* overrated at first. After really giving them a chance, it slowly fit into place. And now I get it. They, with their addictive lo-fi values and disturbing nature, are the Blair Witch Project of music. ...or something. It's the closest comparison I could find, OK?
@fabiopatane9160
10 жыл бұрын
Excellent comparisons. At first, I had quite the same reaction, but mostly because I usually take a conservative approach towards music, constantly looking for melody and traditional hooks. I feel their production is sort of a worm, eating its way inside one's brain, until the fever started blowing. And aside, I have huge respect for their style and attitude towards music making and the industry.

I just remembered what happened that changed my mind on the Grips. People kept telling me, "Oh no, they're awesome, you have to listen to them again". So I did. I listened to The Fever once or twice. And then I had a school trip. We went to an animal testing facility, of all places. It was for Science class. When we went to the necropsy dept. they showed us these... get ready for this... tiny mammal fetuses that had been treated with chemicals, so that their skin was see-through and all you could see was their bones, which were dyed red and blue. Little red and blue skeletal fetuses. It was so bizarre and so morbid that it got me thinking about life and death and everything... and then The Fever got stuck in my head, and I remembered Anthony saying it sounded like a "genetically engineered mutant escaping from a science lab". And I realised I was _in_ a science lab, so I started imagining MC Ride stomping down the corridors, breaking things. I guess all I'm saying is that the music of the Death Grips has a fascinating way of dealing with morbid topics. Sometimes it takes something like that to understand it.
@fabiopatane9160

1Superchops I understand what you mean, but on the same time I don't get it, as I cannot hear anything morbid in their music. To me, it's very raw, emotional, politic, affirmative, powerful and often dark. But I find nothing morbid in their music, as it's very lively for once. Purely as an example, to me some black or death metal can be quite morbid, or even the average, self-indulgent gothic lyrics.
@1Superchops
10 жыл бұрын
For me the morbidness is in the lyrics. Lyrics like "deviated septum blowhole", or "head of a trick in a bucket, body of a trick in a bag", or hell, even "On your knees, black goat anus" are pretty morbid in my eyes.

Just listened to the CD right now. I don't get all these Death Grip fans thinking they have way better taste in music than the people who don't like it. I found the CD to be very catchy at times, and enjoyable to listen to. Sounds awesome, but I think if someone doesn't like it on here, its more likely that its not in their taste... not that they "don't understand it" (cringe). Enjoy the CD if its in your taste, don't if its not... if you think either of those sides is a fool, then you're a basic idiot yourself

No Love Deep web has a much greater intensity for me that's why I give that album 10/10 over this one. This one is more accessible for first time listeners but on No Love Deep Web I love the overly excessive bass that paves way for ultra aggresive lyrics and vocal delivery. As well as the complex melodies infused on top. A true party album - No Love Deep Web 10/10

Thats why i still enjoy it a little bit more overall.

The Money Store was definitely a weird animal that crashed through my bay window and made a mess of the pots and pans in my kitchen. But I couldn't do anything about it because it had such a beautiful rainbow colored coat of feathers and horns that I was stunned in awe and disbelief. I definitely have not heard anything like this before. I don't consider myself a connoisseur of hip hop by any means, although I dabble in groups like Wu Tang Clan and NWA when I feel like something different than the usual Defeater or La Dispute. Even mainstream artists like Eminem or Mos Def will rap about the struggles of every day life. But Death Grips is 100% shock value, no holds barred horror rap. Getting into Death Grips was no easy task since I've never experienced hip hop of this caliber. Imagine you eating nothing but saltines and white milk your entire life, then going to the nearest Thai restaurant and ordering the spiciest item on the menu. Death Grips is certainly some of the most original, thought-provoking hip hop on the market, and I can tell because calling it hip hop almost makes it seem less than what it is. It's such a unique style that it's difficult to brand it, and that's why I enjoy it so much. The shouty, dirty, visceral vocals coupled with the disorienting nausea-inducing productions of drums and deep, fat, farty synths and bass drops is slightly reminiscent of a horror movie. The vocals honestly remind me of a Tyrone character, a meth-addled murder rapist from a shitty neighborhood, and I can almost feel the spit and the heat from his breath as he's screaming directly in my face. It's raw, it's frosty, and intimidating as fuck. This album is definitely not for the faint of heart and easily puts a lot of other "murder rap" albums to shame. My favorite tracks are Get Got and Hustle Bones, two really catchy songs with amazing hooks and some really great programming and beats. This album is iconic in its own way and is so original that it deserves to be in its own niche of the genre. I give it a 8/10.

This is just how I see it, relatively speaking, about the general forefront of supremely talented dark edginess in music...anyone feel free to add to the list :) In the 1960's, The Rolling Stones Paint It Black was released, Alice Cooper appeared, and then the masterful Led Zeppelin influence began. The 1970's had Black Sabbath at the helm. The 1980's had Metallica at it's very best. The 1990's had Marilyn Manson pushing all boundaries. The 2000's had Eminem playing the ultimate no holds barred villainous superstar. And the 2010's......have Death Grips :)

This is the first rap album that i wanted to give a chance to and the first time I've heard this album i got repulsed and disgusted by the tracks in it, this is one of the most uninviting, annoying and hard to listen albums I've ever heard...but after a while it grew on me and I really started to get into it ! all the sounds and vocals that annoyed and irritated me in those tracks are now irreplaceable and essential for the greatness of this album. This album is sick and i like every bit of it. Thanks Anthony for introducing me to this great experience !

Dave Pinhas well it’s like a horror movie. When you watch a horror movie. You aren’t looking for a pleasant experience. You are looking for an exciting and stimulating one that will also really off put you. Some albums require the same mentality

@@apothecurio I’m very late but you’re also very right. It’s like a less extreme version of You Won’t Get What You Want
