Keeping animals is hard and neverending work and sometimes things slip through your hands despite your best efforts. It absolutely sucks, but such is life. I think we all know you do your absolute best to keep your animals happy and healthy, some things are just beyond your control. I think these videos are so important because it really shows how much care these animals need and how important the right environment and husbandry is to their health, as well as how important to have a vet that specializes in reptiles and small animals. These are things we don't always think about when we decide to get a pet like these. I have had turtles and reptiles and done okay with their care, but it was probably more luck and just time spent with them one on one then knowledge. I learn so much from your videos!

I think this is a great teachable moment. It should not be viewed in a negative way. When you have a death and do a necropsy you can share the symptoms, the treatments that you tried, the results of the necropsy and what may have worked. You could have an entire video series of symptoms of various illnesses and the treatments. It would help so many animal enthusiasts.

Sorry for your loss, though sad death is a part of life, as natural as birth. I purchased a nebulizer for one of my Star Tortoises who developed a respiratory infection about 3 years ago. Fortunately she responded well and has had no problems since (knock wood.) I also cured a juvenile Ornate Box Turtle that was given to me near death. It required giving him antibiotic injections every other day, alternating legs for a month. He was also very light so I had to force feed him until he started eating on his own. That Ornate made a miraculous recovery and is currently over 23 years old. When reptiles show signs of illness it’s often too late unfortunately.

It's videos like these and transparencies that you share that help me feel like not a total failure. I purchased two yellow Uromastyx lizards at a "reputable" reptile show up here in the Midwest known as Tinley Park put on by the NARBC. One thing that KZitemrs who are into discussing reptiles as you do forget to educate the public on is how to avoid certain vendors and that certain vendors are even allowed to sell at these types of shows. Long story short, I purchased these two lizards on October 7th and the last one passed away last Friday. When the first one had to be put down, I was mortified, I love my reptiles, I know how to work with them and keep them but man did I question my integrity afterwards. Unfortunately, this particular situation has left me with a not so great feeling of the entire reptile industry here in the states and I am questioning whether I should be keeping reptiles even. Thanks for what you do, I appreciate your videos more then you can imagine.

This may make you feel better - I don't know - but sometimes animals have a burst of feeling good before they pass away. This happened to my cat who had kidney disease. She was just totally awful, could hardly walk at all, the vet called and said her kidneys were 95 % gone + he could not understand why she was even still alive. Yet somehow the next day she had "recovered". She was actually running around the house like a young healthy cat, she could jump up onto high surfaces, etc. I cannot explain it. Because the day before she could barely stand. And to go from that almost dead state to running + jumping?? But I saw it with my own eyes! And it had happened on Independence Day too. She even "watched" the fireworks that night through the screen door. The next day she died. But she had a final very wonderful day. My other cats never did anything like that. But maybe this explains why your turtle was eating. Maybe a last good day enjoying food... ? I believe I have heard some people do this too...

Kenan, the only thing sadder than losing your turtle, is watching you beat yourself up about it. You did not fail! The fact of life, is that if you live long enough, you're bound to die of something. Last year I had a perfectly healthy 6 month old kitten. One night he had a seizure that lasted for about 20 minutes, and then he died. There was no warning whatsoever, and his sister was perfectly fine. (I got her a new kitten to bond with, and they are very happy and healthy together.) I've never had a cat be eating and playful in the evening, just to drop dead later the same night. Sometimes nature is a mystery.

This is simply a part of keeping animals. Infections can be deadly very quickly in older animals and I absolutely think you are right definitely a symptom of an underlying cause. I'm not sure eating means much, I have know multiple animals whi we're very sick and eat all the way up to the end and quite often near the end they have a brief period of getting slightly better before passing.
