South African-born Squadron Leader Marmaduke Thomas St. John ‘Pat’ Pattle is known for being the RAF’s highest scoring ace of World War II despite being killed relatively early in the war. He is generally credited with 50 and 2 shared aircraft destroyed. This number may be higher according to some sources, but this cannot be confirmed as records from the campaign in Greece have been lost. During the air battle over Athens on 20th April 1941, Pattle was last seen going to the aid of his comrade’s Hurricane before being attacked in turn by two Bf 110 aircraft. His aircraft caught fire and exploded, then fell into the sea. He is remembered as a gallant leader and a gifted pilot.
Historical discrepancies: Starrett was not killed immediately as shown. He crash landed his Hurricane which caught fire at Elevsis, but died two days late of severe burns. The Hurricane paint schemes in Greece during this time are disputed as there were very few photographs taken of the planes. As such, I have created all the skins to be as accurate as possible given the evidence. Finally, Athens and the Greek mainland as seen in this video is actually a modified version of the Caucasus map from IL-2 Sturmovik.
