You can't blame Maximillian for never falling in love again. Mary of Burgundy was the love of his life and one accident make him vulnerable. In fact, their story inspires the renaissance, cultures, and politics through the ages. He was Mary's knight in shining armor who protect her and her country from France for years. I would say that they had a true love story that was beautiful and rare to have in royal privileges. Mary and Maximilian's love story was passed down to their descendants in hopes to remind them how they came to be. One woman who loved god and her country so much, she shared her world with her husband.

For all you history buffs: she fell on the 13th of March in the woods near Wijnendale, died on the 27th at Prinsenhof in Bruges. She was 25. In 1998 scientists discovered she had multiple fractures in her arms and ribs and probably died due to internal bleeding. Some scientists believe she was pregnant of her 4th child.

Maximilian loved too much, so much that her death transcended her legacy. Had she not died, perhaps the Habsburgs would've never rose to rule almost all of Europe. It was the pride for their Ancestors that drove them to dominate everyone. And she was among those that inspired the most pride. Its the reason the Habsburgs were one of the few that had Empresses that actually had power.

Mary of Burgundy was pregnant with baby no. 3 at the moment of the accident that cost her life. He only loved Mary and he never loved his other 2 wives in the same way he loved his 1st. He even was upset and dissapointed that his 2nd wife Blanca Maria Sforza wasn't like his first wife Mary and that she couldn't give him an heir.

Max treated Bianca quite badly. He was not on the level of Henry VIII or even Philip the Fair but it was still bad, because Bianca loved him and always wished him well. Bianca was not really sterile. She had some miscarriages. It seemed she had some mental (nervous) problems. Had Max been patient and treated her better, maybe she could have had a child, who knows... It seemed at some point he felt disgusted at sleeping with her. It was not like the casual sex that he engaged in with other women because it came with social bonds and it felt like she replaced Mary. He treated his former sex partners quite politely (and finance-wise generously), while Bianca got only the worst neglect. It's good that modern Austrian (female) scholars explore Bianca's side and her contributions a bit more. I understand that Max loved Mary and it was so romantic but societies need to do something about male self-destructive problems for others' and above all, for their own sake. In Bruges they still say that it was Mary's death that made him hate the city and rule so harshly. We don't know but he really did display some symptoms of trauma, like avoiding coming back to the Netherlands and seemingly even refraining from establishing a true contact with Philip, leaving him wholly to the care of Margaret of York and his Burgundian allies (he was so much more comfortable with Charles and the other grandchildren) - the result was that Philip proved a "traitor" who did not care about his German/Austrian side. Modern physicians/psychiatrists certainly will say that Max should've gotten a little rest and a bit of therapy before being allowed to touch the Netherlandish government or ready for a new marriage, I think. Such a cultured man and normally reconciliatory too, and all they knew about him was that he was this fearsome military guy!

It can be done in a deeper way as well. And as Belgian/Dutch historians (they once "avoided" Max and "forgot" Philip/Filips) are digging into the history of the family even more, I hope one day they do a series, (or a novel or a musical/opera), about the later episodes of Max and their children, showing how the loss of the mother and the tumultous years of revolts affected the family. They can explore the strained relationship between the son who seemed to be both a precocious politician and a complex, sensitive person, and the father, a genius (not only in politics) who devoted so much time building a huge corpus of artistic works depicting Mary and Philip (as divine figures, even), but had no courage to be an actual part of his son's upbringing or going to visit her tomb again after becoming emperor... And Margaret/Margaretha, the daughter who was raised to be a French princess but returned and became an essential link in the family.

@@Alcoholmixture I recommend you watch the Spanish series on Isabella of Aragon. Max and his children are portrayed in that series. @Alcoholmixture
2 жыл бұрын
@@maytc2011 Yes, I think the series is still enjoyable. I've watched Isabella and other series depicting Juana (and Philip). The thing is when it comes to Philip, it's usually a bit one-sided and pushes the (modern) Spanish perspective (feminism does play a role, but it's much more than that). In recent years, there's growing recognition of Philíp's role and virtues (as a monarch) among Benelux scholars (Belgians, in particular). In his lifetime he was popular and admired. He lived a much shorter life than his sister and was a "lesser" patron of art though. The French (and English too), for political and historical reasons, tend to push both Margaret and Charles the Bold as Burgundian symbols, while Philip's value is made out to be a mere tool in marriage politics. Another reason is Max. If one talks about Philip, one can hardly avoid his father. But they have avoided Max for too long. No, he was not Stalin nor Hitler. But he was an external, yet defining force in their history, that "their" culture did not produce nor manage to naturalize *yet* (pure unluck, caused by Mary's early death). There is a lot of bitterness about the way Max "abandoned" the Low Countries after 1493/treated them like a province, seemingly even more than the suppression of the revolts in Flanders. And the insecurity-induced debates on the role of Mary (who has become part of Canon of Dutch History since 2019) in the government. The Austrians have tried to massage them carefully. But it's so bad that recently, the German University of Göttingen has organized a seminar class on this subject alone ("Maria von Burgund, Maximilian I. und Österreich-Burgund" - they make sure to put her name first), led by a professor who has zero history regarding the matter (namely Prof.Elmar Mittler. His natural area is bibliography and digitalization. He has a lot of experience organizing and leading European intergration projects though, i.e.diplomat-professor.). Apparently in the time of growing Dutch-German military cooperation (units are being intergrated; the German side naturally holds more control) and a world with more tensions, the 500 year old brief marriage becomes a (political) story again. I think at some point. the Belgians and Dutch would need to provide a reply to the Spanish discourse with some cultural products. Not just scholarly books and conferences that people hardly hear about. No, Philip was not a great husband or something, but it's unnecessary to dehumanize him (meanwhile, Ferdinand of Aragon and Charles V totally escape this treatment). Let's call it karma for the Dutch for participation in creating the Spanish Black Myth (see Philip II and his son Don Carlos), but these narratives are quite a problem. If the Benelux countries find loving Max that difficult, they don't need to do it either. But they should have more confidence in their identity and history. The Italians have always handled Germanic exports much better...

Would a woman ride in a man style at any time before let say WW1? Opening the legs was not seen as propper for high class females. No woman would even play cello.
@Ruimas28
7 ай бұрын
That´s quite a good question. Culture wise, females would sit sideways at least till they were married. And this is because there was this idea that riding astride could brake their virginity. Now, once they were married, they could technically ride however they wanted. The virginity problem was not a problem anymore. For official cerimonies it was still considered proper behaviour to ride sideways. So you would expect females to ride sideways on all public venues. Also because of the dresses they would wear on public venues / official ceremonies. However, they could learn to ride astride (after marriage) and could do it privately. I do not know how strict the court of Brugundy would be. It was Maria´s court at this point in time. She was also obviously not a virgin anymore. Her husband was in love and not one to contradict her on trivial things. Would she ride astride on a private hunt? I do not know. Unlikely? Maybe. Impossible? Not completely.

Accidents do happen. And the husband did not benefit with her death. In fact, he would have liked her to keep going. She was still very young and she would give him more children. Plus, by all accounts, they worked very well together as a power couple. Killing her at 25 would make 0 political sense. The most likely reality is that she was still young and probably overconfident in her riding skills. Horses can get spooked by the most incredibly random things. She would have had experience and great technique. But she did not have any kind of physical power to hold herself. She was also in early pregnancy so there is that too.
