There a couple of things I think you got wrong. 1 The impact of an intact death star would have been devastating. But, It was blown up and many pieces would have come down across the moon. Some quite large but would not have caused the damage you said. The formula for kinetic energy in K.E.=1/2*M*Vsquared. The pieces of the death star may have been massive but very slow. 2 To produce the energy levels for the Death Star. When the reactor exploded the radiation would have been far more damaging. But enough It's a movie.....good stuff and keep going.

Hello, Generation Tech. While I do certainly enjoy your videos, I'm afraid your scenario involving the Death Star hitting Endor isn't at all accurate. Allow me to explain: The first problem is velocity. An incoming meteor would strike Endor traveling at roughly 30,000 mph. It is the enormous speed that causes the kinetic energy to devastate a planet. This is why a relatively small (as compared to the Death Star) meteor only 7 miles wide could wipe out the dinosaurs across an entire planet (earth) which is 4x larger than Endor. (Interesting that Star Wars never took the decreased gravity into account, eh?). Given that the Death Star would never come anywhere near that speed falling just 285 miles before impacting Endor's surface, the Death Star's impact would actually be relatively gentle as it would only attain speeds of, perhaps just a few hundred miles per hour. Because of the Death Star's sheer size, only the surface would be susceptible to the friction of entry into Endor's atmosphere. Also, due to the Death Star's rather low speed upon impact, it would not break up into billions of pieces nor would it throw off millions of fireballs into the air thus you would not have a global conflagration. Without the speed of a meteor, the kinetic energy transferred to Endor upon impact would be rather small and damage would be localized (perhaps within 1000 miles of ground zero which is still 25% of Endor's surface). There wouldn't even be much of a shock wave. The other problem is that a meteor is a solid, densly packed collection of minerals and metals. The Death Star, on the other hand, is mostly empty space. After all, the Death Star is filled with halls and corridors, living quarters, hangar bays, computer centers, armories, kitchens, assembly points, and even bathrooms. A rather small percentage of the Death Star is actual matter. The rest is just ... air. It's like the difference between a cannon ball and a wiffle ball. This lack of density would mean the Death Star's impact would be even less of a disaster (remember that objects of differing mass only fall at the same speed while in a vacuum, *not* inside of an atmosphere). The Death Star would not disintegrate upon impact, throwing off debris into the atmosphere or, again, it not would would launch millions of fireballs into the air. Instead, the Death Star would slowly collapse upon itself like a beach ball being deflated. The Death Star's inertia would continue after impact causing the hemisphere facing Endor to be compacted -- perhaps the first 100 or so miles of the Death Star that actually hits the surface. Remember though that spheres are incredibly resilient so the Death Star won't flatten like a pancake. Instead, the energy of impact will quickly dissipate leaving the hemisphere facing away from Endor relatively intact. Think of a car that smashes into a brick wall -- the front of the car is utterly demolished while the back end remains undamaged. This would mean that Endor would have a 500 km high, 500 km long mountain of debris reaching all the way into its upper atmosphere (assuming 200 km of the Death Star buried itself into Endor's surface and compacted into a thin yet very dense layer of debris.) The real danger to Endor isn't superheated air, fireballs, shock waves, or global conflagrations. Rather, the danger is more subtle. With such an enormous pile of debris laying there on the surface, Endor's rotation on its axis would be severely destabilized. Imagine sticking a piece of chewed bubblegum onto the edge of a top and spinning it. Yeah, the top would wobble all over the place. That's what would happen to Endor, causing a climate catastrophe. In fact, the impact of the Death Star, gentle though it may be, could even nudge Endor out of its orbit. Remember that Endor is a moon. It wouldn't take a huge nudge to push Endor into a death spiral until it ultimately collides with the planet it orbits (though this might take millions of years, giving the Ewoks time to become a spacefaring species all on its own -- now *there* is a frightening thought!) Anyhow, I just thought I'd share what I feel would be a more likely result of a collision between the Death Star and Endor. My apologies for the length but there wasn't any way to shorten it. Thanks for the vids and I will be watching until you turn out the lights.

Jeevan Joseph depends a bit on how long fragments keep dropping, also, unless the woods on Endor are extremely fire resistant, there is a really, really high probability of global firestorms as the sheer amount of fragments light too many forest fires for any number of rebels or ewoks to put out that fairly quickly will grow and link up until all of the oxygen of the previosly oxygen saturated atmosphere has been consumed into insane ammounts of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and various nitrous, sulphuric and cloride gasses along with a whole lot of steam that will condense into very acidic rain when it eventually is cooled once the fires has stopped from lack of fuel or oxidizer... turning the remains on the surface into acidic sludge on the high ground and caustic sludge in the lower regions which will eventually stabilize into a global, chemically neutral mud-flat void of life but fertile beyond imagination yet constantly ravaged by storms due to the lack of ozone layer to filter the incoming energy of Endor's sun and no vegetation to buffer the winds.

Can you see a fledgling new government having the resources or even interest in saving the Ewoks? They had billions, if not even trillions, of more advanced citizens that would need protecting in the wake of the failure of the Empire.

... So the Ewoks tree village magically appeared on the far side of the moon? They weren't friends with other tribes, the only Imperials were on the side closest to the Death Star. That was my initial thought too, but given the size difference I did some very questionable and hand wavy math and it doesn't seem unreasonable that the amount of energy imparted by the impact would necessarily be less than from the dinosaur killer. Going from 10 km to 200 km is (assuming similar density and shape, which I know is not necessarily a good assumption, but it's what I'm working with and should give us a ballpark number. Like I said, hand wavy) an 8000 x increase in mass. Current estimates for the dinosaur killer put the speed of the asteroid somewhere around 20 km/s. Using that value to calculate kinetic energy (Ke=0.5*m*(v^2)) and you get an equivalent velocity necessary for the death star ~8000 km per hour which is well more than doable even from low orbit. For the sake of comparison, the reentry speed of the space shuttle when it was flying was ~28,163 km per hour and that's a controlled descent (granted that Endor is less than half the diameter of earth and therefore the gravitational pull would be far less, meaning both less vertical force being exerted on it and less orbital velocity needed to maintain orbit at that altitude). I know my values are vague and my math questionable. I just was curious how far outside the realm of possibility the results are and the answer is that it appears like the damage described is quite within the realm of reasonable expectation.

Energy is a matter of mass and velocity. The second death star outmassed by asteroid that killed the dinosaurs by about 64,000 times, meaning it would only need to be moving at 1.6 centimetres per second for every kilometre per second the asteroid was moving for a comparable level of energy release. At just 1 meter per second the impact would be equivalent to the asteroid travelling at 64 kilometres per second. Given how the gravity of Endor would be about 3.7 meters/second of force, that meas the thing falling down would be the equivalent of that asteroid travelling at approximately 236.8 kilometres per second, or about 10-20 times the speed the real asteroid had when it hit Earth.

This assumes that the DS was close enough to fall in the first place. SW is infamous for bad science, even for the time it was put out. Why would any self respecting space construction crew build close enough for their product to fall. Shield generator be damned; it would be cheaper to build a more effective shield generator, than to it would be to maintain escape velocity. This means, that if the DS was in synchronous orbit most of the DS would blow away from Endor. Most of the pieces not having enough mass to overcome initial orbiting speed in order to fall; the whole point to synchronous orbit. Earth has plenty of garbage up in orbit from our space program. Those pieces with the mass and blast velocity to overcome their own geosynchronous orbit could still be a problem, if the Rebel Fleet (in combat range mind you) ignored the rubble. Of course, this would also require the ignoring of the Roche Limit; again, self-respecting construction companies would take this into account. All told, I have to ask, where the DS parking orbit came from? Did some one say it, or was it in the books, or some other tangible canon which can be dragged up presented as irrefutable; if so, than our lord gawd and savior George Lucas fucked the pooch again. If all you have is an inference based on a holo image, then this video is flawed. www.st-v-sw.net/STSWdeathstarsizes-2.html
@ZontarDow
7 жыл бұрын
It would have to be pretty bad science for something that's about 20 times closer to the surface of the planet then it is the geosynchronous orbital area to not fall down onto it. As it stands the DS2 was in a low geosynchronous orbit, meaning, by virtue of it not falling down, it had some form of active support. The station does have an engine, both hyperspace and sublight, so it's likely that was keeping it up.

I wrote a fan fiction where Grand Moff Tarkin survived and he piloted the death star into Endor when he realized the empire would lose. Luke and Vader evacuate people when they are the last ones in the area and the planet is exploding behind them. They run to the ship when Vader limps. (Emperor's force lightning has finally got to him) he tells Luke to leave him but Luke says that he has taught him many things and not one of those things was to leave someone behind. Luke grabs Vader and its like that moment from return of the king were sam helps Frodo to mount doom. Vader and Luke's theme are swelling in the background as they walk in front of the explosions. Sense the Death Star was not traveling at hight speed before gravity started to pull it (unlike the meteor that killed the dinosaurs) plus since Endor technically having less gravity because of it having smaller mass it would mean that the Death Star would have lest impact on the moon so in could mean that the ewalks had a chance. And then of course you see the rebel fleet head towards Endor so if all there ship were there they would have to do something about the debris other wise it severely damaged the fleet so there had to ether destroyed the majority of it. Or sense the empire still was a threat the could of salvaged the parts of the Death Star for themselves. But an amazing video as always you brought something to light that many of us have probably never thought about so thanks for making awesome content!👍

+Serrated you bring up some good points the white paper actually states the debris would be falling at around 2km/s which is much slower than how fast an asteroid was flying. They also state that the most of the ships would be destroyed.

Generation Tech A couple of points if I may. The holo shown in the briefing scene needs to be taken with a grain of salt. It is a near certainty that the DS2 was several times farther away from Endor than shown in the holo. The Empire would not want their battle station that close to the atmosphere where the possibility of it being caught by the moon's gravity and brought into a crash would be too great. Plus the tidal forces of the moon's gravity would likely have caused problems with construction at such close proximity. On top of that, when the Rebel fleet moved away from the DS2 to get out of range of its destruction, they moved TOWARDS the Endor moon and were quite clearly out of harm's way. My second point is right after the explosion caused by Wedge and Lando's attacks vented out through the access shafts, a brief flash appears to occur across the entire station, followed about a second later by a massive explosion that obliterated the station. It appears that the Rebel attack destroyed one reactor, who's explosion ripped through the entire station and then cooked off the entire reactor system. That second explosion is what physically destroyed the DS2. The initial explosion, had it not cooked off the other reactors would have simply left the DS2 a burned out dead hulk in space that would have likely crashed into the Endor moon at some point. Instead, it caused all of the other reactors to blow, obliterating the entire station. Everyone (who wasn't an Imperial) then lived Happily Ever After.

Generation Tech then again, even just baseball sized fragments are likely to catch fire from entry friction and larger pieces are likely to start forest fires, many more forest fires than anyone could control. These would grow exponentially as the hot smoke would create ever stronger updraughts and pull oxygen in sideways along the ground. This process will also pull adjacent fires together into flame storms yhat would make the fires of the WW2 raid on dresden look like a disposable barbecue set in comparison as the fires will rage ever more intense until all the oxygen and other potential subsititute gasses in the atmosphere has been consumed. And then, when the fires die out, and the pall of smoke envelopong the entire moon blocks out the sun, the smoke will start to cool down, the steam in it will condensate and as the drops fall, they will react with the sulphuric and nitrous gasses of the smoke into sulphuric and nitric acid. As the acid rain falls on the high ground, it will wash away the ashes, top soil and corrode any surviving life on it and sedimentary rock underneath. As the acid reacts with the ashes and pools in the low ground, it will turn caustic from the lye in the ashes and corrode any surviving life there until most of the vapour has condensed and taken the smoke and particles back to the ground as rain. Then, without any ozone layer left to stop it, the UV-rays of the local star will scorch the planet-wide mudflats, and as the hot air and vapour from the drying mud rises, and no vegetation left to slow it, the temperature difference between the day and the night side of Endor will create a permanent system of morning and evening cyclone fronts following the day cycle.

2 problems: 1. DStar is not a solid object, its average density is relatively small 2. asteroids/meteorites have usually much higher energy, as they are roaming throught the space with considerable speed. In this case, only gravitional pull of this (relatevely) low orbit would be a factor. In the end, it might not much worse than Tunguska.

Premise that large fragments of the death star would impact Endor like an asteroid causing mass extinction assumes that large fragments of the death star would survive the explosion of the core. But the death star is not a solid ball. It has a honeycomb like structure the Millennium Falcon was able to fly through. So I think, most of the space station was vaporized in the explosion and what was left were small fragments that harmlessly burned up on entry into Endor's atmosphere.

You're assuming that the Death Star impacting the planet is moving quickly. The reason the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs was so powerful was because of it's velocity. The Death Star is essentially stationary in comparison. It wouldn't necessarily have all that much impact force outside of it's initial impact zone.

blowing something up wouldn't necessarily knock it out of orbit, if an outward explosion were to occur on orbit, debris would be thrown in all directions, depending how it breaks, depends how much gets thrown it what direction.... There may be a huge chunk hitting Endore, or maybe most might be accelerated onto an escape trajectory

the secondary explosion that we saw on film was large enough to vaporize a large amount of material and reduce the remaining fragments to well below 200 km. Also, conservation of linear moment still holds. Maybe a few fragments would come down and impact the surface, but the majority would either remain in orbit or get thrown off into space.

Alan, asteroids impact at tens of thousands of mph, which is what gives the impacts so much energy. Something falling from geostationary orbit is going to have a speed in the low hundreds of mph, very little energy by comparison. You wouldn’t get a huge crater, and you wouldn’t get much vaporisation.

In the new canon, it is made clear that the Republic used gravity wells to keep the debris away from the Moon. Which makes sense, that scrap would be incredibly valuable to the New Republic, and should be kept in space, rather than allowing it to burn up in atmosphere.

This may be shown in TROS as in the trailer Rey and Kylo are fighting on pieces of the Death Star II. Maybe the disastrous outcome happened after the end of ROTJ but after the Rebellion left. Then after 30+ years, the plants and trees grew back. But it is a differnet timing and 30 years is worth like 300 for Endor.
@Palmerrip

There is a plausible reason. Remember that the Rebel Fleet is seen heading toward Endor's orbit. So something to know, they're not some push-over ships the Mon Cal ships were converted to take on the Imperial Star Destroyers. With that said what ever source you use the Rebel Fleet at Endor comprised of dozens of MC units with escorts. So, when the DS2 blows up and scattered remains everywhere the fleet could have been in a position to shoot down any debris that was a hazard to the planet. Much less tractor it away into the star.

0:44 Am I the only one who was emotio ally stricken by this photo? This takes me back to a time when Star Wars represented hope and possibility. Seeing Mark in this picture and knowing what his character (Luke) and his opinions are these days makes me feel sad. It's right there in his eyes in this picture, pure potential not just for himself as a performer but for Star Wars as a whole! His eyes are saying "I'm so glad to be here doing something I believe will be amazing". My god, it's like remembering when a depressed family member used to be happy. 😥

The Death Star might have been 200 km in diameter but most of it was empty space, either from the unfinished areas or all the hallways and rooms. If you would crush that down into a solid Mass it would probably be over 90% smaller which would be about 20 km or smaller. And the velocity that the asteroid was moving the killed the dinosaurs was extremely fast whereas something that would fall from orbit wouldn't be moving anywhere near those speeds and speeds a huge Factor in the formula for kinetic energy
