From the NPS website: Devil's Golf Course An immense area of rock salt eroded by wind and rain into jagged spires. So incredibly serrated that "only the devil could play golf on such rough links". Listen carefully and you'll hear sounds like tiny pops and pings. Bend your ear to the ground and the sound grows louder. The sound is literally billions of tiny salt crystals bursting apart as they expand and contract in the heat. The Devils Golf Course is best viewed from the parking area. The salt formations are fragile.

And if you go west into the Sequoia National Forest from there up through Kernville the sign as you enter Johnsondale says population 1 1/2. I asked the only resident, the Ranger, who the 1/2 was and he chuckled and said you figure it out as he walked away. That was like 12 yrs ago or so. I still wonder to this day. I played Furnace Creek last July, but coming from Phoenix didn't find the temperature that uncomfortable. What bothered me was those darn local coyotes. Yikes! They're essentially domesticated, and will come right up to you looking for handouts. One of the groundskeepers was laughing at me trying to scare one away so I could get on my cart and escape it.

A great episode as always, but you shanked it into the lake when you talked about the effect of altitude on the golf ball. Though low altitude (and higher air density) do have a negative effect on the aerodynamics of a ball (or any other object's passage through air), you're not correcting for temperature, pressure, or humidity. If the air is warmer than normal, the ambient pressure is lower than normal, and/or humidity is higher than normal, the air will be less dense than normal. Of these factors, temperature plays the biggest part. In fact, the calculated density altitude at the course on the day you played was 2,300' *above* sea level. That's based on the given temperature of 98F and elevation of -214' MSL, and assuming a standard atmospheric pressure of 29.92" and a dewpoint of 40F, typical for a desert day. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Density_altitude
