I would think if a survey was done, the vast majority of people would have no idea that the veal industry only exists due to the surplus male calves from the dairy industry. How many people don’t even know cows make milk because they’ve had a calf & have to have one every year to maintain milk production to be profitable. I can’t remember if David mentioned to Josh that although Josh said he wouldn’t eat veal (or lambs due to the young age/short life), he does infact support it with his choices if he consumes ‘dairy’ cow products. I think David answered it by making Josh aware that animals used for meat etc have very short lives anyway, so by his own standards, he shouldn’t be eating any commercial animal products because they’re all killed at a fraction of their natural lifespan’s. There was A LOT for David to answer in such a short time, but he did an excellent job 👏 i think it makes for great listening for all non vegans to learn from. Carrying on from the point about veal, similarly some vegetarians don’t eat animal flesh because they don’t want animals to be killed, but fortunately for the animals, the truth is getting out so fewer people can say they genuinely didn’t know about the killing of cows, calves, hens & chicks in the dairy & egg industries. The industries that exploit animals do a very good job of keeping the truth hidden & making the consumers believe everything is humane, but that is starting to change with more & more footage & information being available to the general public.

So all I have to do to exploit humans is to give them the most natural environment that is practically possible, got it. *Takes notes*
@KrwiomoczBogurodzicy
10 ай бұрын
“Giving farm animals more space, more natural environments, more companions does not right the fundamental wrong [treating them as resources], any more than giving lab animals more anaesthesia or bigger, cleaner cages would right the fundamental wrong in their case.” - Tom Regan, _The Case for Animal Rights_ “One particularly poor argument in defence of eating meat is that if humans did not eat animals, those animals would not have been brought into existence in the first place. Humans would simply not have bred them in the numbers they do breed them. The claim is that although these animals are killed, this cost to them is outweighed by the benefit to them of having been brought into existence. This is an appalling argument for many reasons (some of which are outlined by Robert Nozick. See his _Anarchy, State and Utopia_ (Oxford: Blackwell, 1974, 38-9). First, the lives of many of these animals are so bad that even if one rejected my argument one would still have to think that they were harmed by being brought into existence. Secondly, those who advance this argument fail to see that it could apply as readily to human babies that are produced only to be eaten. Here we see quite clearly that being brought into existence only to be killed for food is no benefit. It is only because killing animals is thought to be acceptable that the argument is thought to have any force. In fact it adds nothing to the (mistaken) view that killing animals for food is acceptable. Finally, the argument that animals are benefited by being brought into existence only to be killed ignores the argument that I shall develop in Chapters 2 and 3-that coming into existence is itself, quite independently of how much the animal then suffers, always a serious harm.” - David Benatar, _Better Never To Have Been_ “One ubiquitous argument, not unconnected with side constraints, deserves mention: because people eat animals, they raise more than otherwise would exist without this practice. To exist for a while is better than never to exist at all. So (the argument concludes) the animals are better off because we have the practice of eating them. Though this is not our object, fortunately it turns out that we really, all along, benefit them! (If tastes changed and people no longer found it enjoyable to eat animals, should those concerned with the welfare of animals steel themselves to an unpleasant task and continue eating them?) I trust I shall not be misunderstood as saying that animals are to be given the same moral weight as people if I note that the parallel argument about people would not look very convincing. We can imagine that population problems lead every couple or group to limit their children to some number fixed in advance. A given couple, having reached the number, proposes to have an additional child and dispose of it at the age of three (or twenty-three) by sacrificing it or using it for some gastronomic purpose. In justification, they note that the child will not exist at all if this is not allowed; and surely it is better for it to exist for some number of years. However, once a person exists, not everything compatible with his overall existence being a net plus can be done, even by those who created him. An existing person has claims, even against those whose purpose in creating him was to violate those claims. It would be worthwhile to pursue moral objections to a system that permits parents to do anything whose permissibility is necessary for their choosing to have the child, that also leaves the child better off than if it hadn’t been born.* (Some will think the only objections arise from difficulties in accurately administering the permission.) Once they exist, animals too may have claims to certain treatment. These claims may well carry less weight than those of people. But the fact that some animals were brought into existence only because someone wanted to do something that would violate one of these claims does not show that the claim doesn’t exist at all.” - Robert Nozick, _Anarchy, State, and Utopia_ *Recall the Yiddish joke: -“Life is so terrible; it would be better never to have been conceived.” -“Yes, but who is so fortunate? Not one in a thousand.”

Good debate, but one thing I'd like to note is the tendency for non-vegans to make the case for eating meat on the basis of a circumstance which does not exist for 99% of meat eaters - that is being able to get all their meat by hunting for it, probably best exemplified by Joe Rogan. it's a classic case of the Motte and Bailey fallacy - adopting a position that you don't normally hold, but which is easier to defend, for the sake of trying to win an argument - and something that needs to be called out. it's usually combined with an agreement that factory farming is bad. But then why are they arguing against Vegans? they should be arguing against the vast majority of other meat eaters.

It’s almost more condescending than having someone actually scream bacon repeatedly. At least the person screaming has been triggered. While I understand that more vegans are liberals/ left leaning, I find it interesting that debates on veganism are often framed in a political "vegan vs. right wing" perspective. Veganism is about compassion, and compassion has nothing to do with political affiliation. I would certainly be considered a conservative or "right wing", and I have been vegan for years.

That depends on what veganism is, and youb tend not to get a straight answer from vegan activists on this issue. Is Veganism voluntary or is it a 'moral mandate'? If it's the latter, then there's a clear problem. If it's a suggestion, then it isn't a political issue.

The other argument against plants feel pain is that there is no evolutionary advantage for them to do so if they cannot move or shift away from "painful stimuli" in fact, many plants and trees thrive when you prune them properly, IE cut them down. Mushrooms especially the mycelia and caps clearly have no advantage in feeling pain. If for example a tree falls down on them or a horse hoof squishes them, what advantage would that serve, except to expel the spores such that the mushrooms can continue to propagate. So please use these types of arguments in order to quash the nonsense espoused here

11 minutes in, and just had to note that subtle little thing that people do when they debate vegans. Vegan: "I'm just trying to help reduce animal suffering as much as practically possible." Non-vegan: "And I have nothing against that, I fully support your right to do so." As if vegans are somehow actually harming anyone by *NOT* doing something (but it's implied that it's somehow harmful). There's just an air of dishonesty in that thought process that makes me not trust the people espousing that approach to it... The "I have no problem with that" line that everyone uses nowadays. It's impossible to have a rational discussion on wildlife management with the black and white thinking with the vegan mindset. Peter Scott was a great conservationIst , wildfowler. Who ultimately formed the Wildfowl Trust. As regards the success story of deer in the UK is down to the farmers, estate owners planting thousands of acres of trees. There is now no longer apex predators ie Wolves so it's down to responsible and highly trained and regulated deerstalkers to manage these population's. Let me spell this out for you as I am a retired Gamekeeper/Stalker. It's not about shooting any deer that you come across. Basically you are trying do do the same job as a Wolf. They would take out old. sick or injured deer.therfore maintaining the integrity of the herd. This seems to be at odds with vegan beliefs. If you love these animals as you claim but rather leave this old , sick or injured to prolonged suffering. And bear in mind that a given area will,only sustain a certain number. If not managed many would starve out or would you prefer that. I can tell you now from my lifelong experience hunters and shooters are not the sadists that you believe they are. Many go out there to experience nature first hand. I feel I've had a very privelideged life experience this life style and to contribute the conservation of wildlife. For example I have personally planted thousands of trees which can now be seen on Google earth. I think that's a pretty major contribution.

I found it odd that David never acknowledged that humans are part of the ecosystem as predators and we should be part of it instead of separate from it. New research has shown that hominids have been in North America for over 100,000 years eating meat, and large amounts from mammoth kills. North America wasn't devoid of humans, we were major predators like wolves. Simply look at how the Plains peoples organized themselves, migratory predators that followed the Bison herds. We shouldn't cut ourselves off from nature, death and killing is a core part of nature. Recent findings are showing that plants appear to be sentient, able to feel, hear, and recently discovered, scream. It may very well be that plants also suffer if not properly cared for. We are not gods, we are not divine, we are not above nature, we are part of it.

About the health. I grew up a vegetarian and dabbeled with the idea of eating meat, because people told me I needed the iron. I come from a background of very weak health. I owe potatoes my life. My two cents; Vegan is not necessarily healthy because vegan is not a diet. Nor does a plant based diet have to be exclusive or expansive to be healthy. Learn from the plant based doctors, there are many. My favorite doctor is dr. Mcdougall MD.

The argument that we need to cull wild animals to avoid them over-populating and causing damage to ecosystems is a bit misguided. In Australia we have an over-population of kangaroos specifically because we have torn down so much forest land to grow crops for livestock and kangaroos have thrived with this change while many other animals have suffered like koalas. If we were to go vegan then we could re-wild a lot of this land and there would be less need to cull animals because these ecosystems would reach an equilibrium without our intervention.

mushroom is kind of escapist deluxe, even tho it's said "not serious questions" bc it is kind of looking away from the slaughterhouse. we don't eat the whole mushrooms, we eat just a part of it, which is kind of their sexual organs that decompose anyway, a mushroom is much more than just what we see. it is still kind of baseless to say "i want to protect mushrooms" when there is really no interest in protecting either mushrooms or animals.
