That's right Sue. Because there was an almost daily deluge of incredible music, we didn't stop to think, MAN! THIS IS FREAKING UNBELIEVABLE! It wasn't till sometime in the 80s that I realized how incredible the 70s music scene was. There was a lack of GREAT music in the 80s and most of the best stuff in that decade were from 70s bands. Maybe it was due to the record companies pushing hard in an attempt to make people think ca rap, numb wave and puke(punk) was great stuff. By 1982, all of it was gone but ca rap because little boys like to hear some loser saying cuss words for an hour.

To answer your question, I think all of us loved the plethora of great artists and songs of the era...and I think we kind of took it for granted, asking ‘so what’s next’? Now, at 50, I have witnessed the sea of great songs/artists seemingly shrink to a pond, with medium fishes like Drake thinking they’re God’s gift for surpassing the Beatles’ record for something or other. I definitely appreciate the music I grew up with more than ever now, and it is truly a treat to watch people like you discover and/or appreciating them for the first time. We were so lucky to have grown up with that many great artists...I think you would love Linda Ronstadt singing “Long Long Time” live. Beautiful woman with a stunning voice!

This was a great song. Sadly, radio stations stopped playing it when they found out that it was a gospel song and the one "Lighting up her life" was God, not some boyfriend. Debby Boone, like her singer dad Pat Boone, is a Christian.
@dinodasbunce6224

The song was originally written by Joe Brooks as a normal man, woman relationship song. Joe was not even close to being christian. When Debby Boone sang the song her interpretation was a love song to god.

right. But it was her interpretation she was promoting along with the song which is why it got pulled off the air. The radio stations didn't know or care about the writer. Yep. Also I think 2 things helped contribute to our catalog of music we carry in our hearts (memory). 1. From the 1980-1990, I went from age 10 to age 20. I did not have any responsibilities like a job or other worries. All I did was listen to the radio all day, everyday (except when in school of course, but then the Walkman out too)! I didn't realize how blessed we were! 2. They break up album into track you can purchase without having to listen to the whole album now days! What a shame! Remember 8 tracks and cassettes? You had to manually skip a song and if you were too lazy or forgot to, then you listened to all songs!

Near the beginning, there's a shot of Debbie Boone's parents (Shirley and Pat) smiling in the audience. Debbie's dad, Pat Boone, was a very popular crooner and heart throb and actor (who also hosted his own variety TV show) in the 1950s to mid-1960s ("Love Letters in the Sand," "I Almost Lost My Mind"). Debby Boone never reached the success of this 1977 pop smash again (10 weeks at No. 1), but she did record country and gospel songs until the mid-1980s, including the No. 1 country song "Are You on the Road to Lovin' Me Again?"

We travelled all over the country picking whatever fruit or vegetable was in season. From the age of 7 or 8 I was in the fields at 6 or 630 every morning. I still love music so much. Now, my music choice is contemporary Christian music. I love finding out the back story to songs. The reason behind what was going on in the writers life when they wrote it. Whether Christian or secular, I've found that some of the most prolific and meaningful songs have come out of a lot of pain.

MAN! I was so in love with this song. The talent and original music back then seem to hit every possible emotion. I remember the first time my girlfriend played it for me. She heard it before I did. I struggled not to tear up. I had goosebumps. The talent pool today is so shallow you dare not dive in, you'll hit the bottom. A lot of today's artist are taking the easy way and sampling music or doing remakes. This is what happens when you don't invest in the arts. Creativities bright light of originality begins to dim, and will eventually go out.

I know how Debbie Boone did it so masterful. Knowing her talent and how great a singer she was she slow plays the song to the peak so when she gets to the top she can give it her all and it comes out so Amazing. Everyone who covers this song tries to go 100 from the start and when the peak comes they can't get were Debbie got because they just don't have the voice to keep going. Debbie saves everything for that one moment were this sappy love song because legendary. Without Debbie Boone singing this song nobody would even know it exist. Debbie Boone keeps the tone slow build and just gets a little more, here's the one thing she does right before she gets into the big payoff she slow the song just a little more, So when she starts to clime she can go to another level leaving you breathless.

No - remember you looking over 70 years (say from the 50s - which you are yet to discover). We heard the songs as we were growing up - our parents songs, new songs then as we got older we went back and discovered older songs like you are doing. We used to know every song, where as nowadays it is flooded with millions of bits and pieces. We laughed we cried we howled, we sang at the tops of our voices, stomped and danced - and we still do all that over the same songs! The joy and excitement never ever leaves you. Not till your dying day. People layout songs for what they want to be played when they die - Music is everything.

I never felt overwhelmed, music was a big part of my life back then. I hated this when it first came out because it was played to death, but nowadays it sounds sensational. Lucky to be a child of the 60's and 70's.

You know, I was only 8 years old when this song was released. It is actually about me. I light up everyone's life. Also Carly Simon's song, Nobody Does it better......also about me. 😁

You always looked forward to the next song, the next album because the last one you heard was so good. It was our rabbit hole, if we liked a certain artist, you collected every album, EP and 45. You went to their concerts, collected music magazines, etc. The best feeling was opening a new album and getting a huge poster or book or stickers, etc. You always hoped they would have the lyrics printed inside on the record sleeve. It was awesome back then.

Debbie really lit up your life and face as I knew she would when I read the title! You’re a sensitive soul and don’t ever change that James! 🥰

I have always loved this song. It was #1 for 10 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977. It was a massive hit, but it received a lot of backlash because it was so popular. I saw that you had a smile on your face the entire time you were listening to the song. That makes me happy because, to me, that shows what a great song it still is. As far as feeling overwhelmed, you have already been down many rabbit holes, and there are a seemingly endless list of artists and songs to discover. Just sit back and enjoy it! I don't know if you've already reacted to these other 70's artists, but you should check them out, too: Maureen McGovern, Helen Reddy, Anne Murray, and the Captain and Tennille.
