Trek from Ethiopia
David B Harris (composer, arranger, mix engineer, mastering, producer)
After a decade of listening to traditional Ethiopian music, both pop music from the golden age of the 60’s and 70’s, and folk music played on indigenous instruments, and culminating in a 2 year journey with Boston-based Debo Band, he composed “Trek from Ethiopia.”
The original version was composed as a solo violin work for his wife, violinist Mimi Rabson. Meant to cross a wide path of genres, he took the modal Ethiopian pentatonic scales and traditional rhythmic gestures, and married that to contemporary western jazz and contemporary classical practices. Trek is a personal expression of the impression Ethiopia, it’s music and people, had on him as a composer.
Debo Band is a 11-member group led by Ethiopian-American saxophonist Danny Mekonnen and fronted by vocalist Bruck Tesfaye. Active since 2006, they perform a version of Ethiopian pop music like that in the Éthiopiques series, melding traditional scales and vocal styles with American soul and funk rhythms and instrumentation reminiscent of Eastern European brass bands.
"Beyond Addis" is a collection of contemporary bands inspired by Ethiopian music from the 70's
The music of "Swinging Addis" of the 70's was a clash of opposite elements: western instruments (drums, bass, guitar, horns) and the stylistic influence of Jazz, Soul, R&B and Rock'n'Roll bumping into traditional techniques of singing and composing, a legacy of Ethiopian popular music. Mastermind of this revolutionary mix was Mulatu Astatke. Fascination and intrigue around these works has grown over the years. Now, this compilation gives an overview of the work of young bands around the world inspired by Ethiopian music.
