Very Good Video Sandy. Thankyou for spending the time to do this for us all. During my extensive planning for my WHW Trek in October I have scheduled in a Follow Up Debrief for the week after I return. I am very grateful for your advice about needing good ankle support whilst carrying the pack, which has made me come to the conclusion my trek shoes need to be changed to boots. Hope Mandy is continuing her recovery well. Stay Safe & God Bless Savvas

Well done for completing the walk. We arrived and walked it the following week over 6 days and the weather was grim! But what an amazing walk. Funny we stayed in ma y of the same wildcamp spots as you but to your credit there was no trace! I see you took the trangia, I left mine at home to save weight and almost cried lol when my ultra light gas stove packed up on the first night! For the rest of the trip we had to share one stove which was crap to be honest... Lesson learnt, and it goes to show that the simple bits of kit like the meths stove are bomber and still have a place despite all the fancy kit you can get....great set of vids! The best bit for me was round Loch Lomond.. Peace.

The scarpa are good Sandy. Interesting points made and some very useful tips. Many thanks. I will be getting some Merino wool I think. A great choice in tent - I've just purchased the Six Moons Designs Lunar Solo tarp tent. It weighs in at 650 grams. As you say going light for long hikes has to be a consideration. It certainly is for me at the mo. Any way, enjoyed your talk. All the best. Mark.

Great breakdown of the beneficial kit we were all wondering about. Another thing I thought was great to see was that you found refuse left by uncaring people and collected it and disposed of it...think it makes all of us that love the outdoors so very much pretty annoyed that respect for these amazing places is being forgotten. Hat off to you for your thoughtfulness on that matter. Best wishes old bean - Steve

Welldone Cathy, I am sure you will enjoy the walk but be prepared for midges in the warmer weather. they are small biting insects. You will need insect repellent.

I think the midges must be similar to the "no-see-ums" we have in our Southwest. I understand that stinky Avon Skin-so-soft keeps them away just like it does our version of the midges. Indeed, you can buy the stuff in our National Parks gift shops! It works, but it smells so awful that I almost want to get away from myself!

I agree with Sandy about trail runners and one piece leather boots. In rocky terrain trail runners can get badly beaten up. The coarse mesh let's the dust through, mixed with water from a river crossing and you end up with muddy feet! I tried Gortex lined Saloman trail runners. They were great, but as soon as you get one hole they are worse than mesh shoes for softening your feet and take ages to dry. A good pair of one piece leather boots, with bellowed lace gussets protect your feet. The cushioning liner pumps hot sweaty-moist air out of the boot too. The leather really takes a beating and protects your soles and your toes. The rubber that Vibram uses for the soles could be stickier. It's less grippy than Innov8s which make you feel like one of those geckos you see scurrying up the walls in the tropics. But, with a stick and some caution it is a compromise well worth making when walking in cold wet rocky environments.

Another great video sandy. I think your info about the importance of your socks was most helpful to me, I've been wincing at the prospect of forking out £20 a pair for darn tough socks, but I think after your comments I'll go ahead and pull the trigger on them. I love my Osprey packs I use a Stratos 24 as my day pack and an Exos 38 for multi-day hikes. I can fit my minimalist kit in the Exos 38 (it's actually 40litre) with a base weight of about 8kg (that includes a few luxuries) and still have room for 6 days of food and upto 3l of water. The pack itself weighs under 1kg. Well worth checking out the Osprey Exos range, they do them upto nearly 60l if you must carry lots of stuff. They're extremely light without sacrificing on the comfort of having a full frame. atb from sunny Derbyshire, Tim o/

A tip about dry bags. Eagle creek.com sell see through compression bags. These are airtight with valves on. As you squeeze the volume of your gear gets smaller. You can spread them out on the ground and see what's in them, and the contents remain dry. They are very light. Forget the old roll top silicon impregnated nylon dry bags. Get yourself three or four size medium Eagle Creek compression bags.

Hi Sandy, i paused american sniper, got to impatient to wait to watch your debrief vid. My summary about this video is how you found: A.weight to be a driving issue and i cant agree more. I have put it to Darren (funky) he carries way to much weight. Weight on your back = weight on your mind and it alters your whole psychology. Im not sure i would recommend ultra light for a couple of reasons: 1. less is more and i mean money, its a bit gimmicky the latest in the line of next prototypes in the never ending bout of anally shaving gramms off (a marketing mans dream), 2. It dosnt lend it self in terms of robustness to bushcraft i.e. i recon the trangia triangle and evernew Ti mug hits the mark for both aspect of bushcraft and lightweight backpacking well enough that you dont need to have seperate kit for for either discipline and 3. the more outings the same kit comes out with you (kit that works for bushcraft and hiking) the more confident in yourself and the kits abilitys to perform to the point you dont have to think about it. The never ending pursuit of thinking about how this and that bit of new ultra light gear will work detracts from the immersion in the natural world, especially as it has to be exploited to produce this the next new thing. B feet can i ask have you ever done the two sock thing ? Bridgdale make a great inner sock, really thin that used with the sock you showed works a absolute charm. I have in recent years come to realise my boot fitting wasnt that good. I took the time to have my feet measured PROPERLY. i was wearing boots that were to small. Boot fitting is a tricky one that take a great deal of time to work out what is the best for you. My drill for feet: 1. Bridgedale coolmax inner, 2. Bridedale woolen outer, 3. the first sign of blisters going to form STOP dont push on to camp and address 4. dry feet fully (weather permitting this kind of stop) 5. compeeds make sure the affected area is warmed (hand warmth, rubbing together and placing on compeed) is fine, 6. change socks for spare dryer (in the scot hills socks never really get bone dry) it just better than putting on same sweatty damp ones I have 3 pair inner and outer socks when long dist hiking. 7. fully dry, massage feet and powder put on warm bone dry camp socks (not the driest ones for walking) lots of tlc for the old feet. Well that it from me really liked the vid and understand about the wait. thanks for sharing. I recon a cross scotland hike should be on the cards soon. ATB cheers.

+43whisky Excellent info thanks. I have tried two pairs of socks in the past . Yes I would agree with your thoughts on all the above. Gear that performs well in the bushcraft environment is important to me. I take onboard what you say about gimmicky ultra light gear. In my book the gear needs to last and be robust too. Sandy

+Wiltshire Man The devil is in the detail. though it was funny how you said the most crucial was the most boring at the start of the vid. I love it when knowledge presents itself to you, all big things are ultimately made of small things. crack enough of the small things which with experience will priorities themselves. like your comment 5.20 something in your pack that doesn't contribute to anything. Again thanks sandy for the debrief cheers paul

+Tac Blades Is this something you will be doing for a small business Gary? If so I thinks it's a great idea. Have you heard of Ray Jardine?

No just a hobby, i have a full time job which is pretty demanding, but i like to make things for friends. Yes ray is the guy thay kind of started a lot of the lightweight stuff, good innovation.

Thanks for posting this great video. I watched all of your videos of the trip and Badgers too! I wondered if the choice to use meths was because of the apparent reduced CO risk when cooking in a tent vestibule? tia and atb

+Bill Gatesy Thanks Bill. No I was not concerned about CO2. I could have used the gas stove in the Hex peak shelter due to good ventilation. I just prefer meths to gas. Sandy

Nice comprehensive debrief Sandy.. Stunning effort that as you say you learned from it and thoroughly enjoyed the experience... Liking the tent, it's much like a lightweight Polish Lavue tepee .. where did you buy it ? Be safe Mack.

+mack tightwad Hi Mack, I got it from Backpacking light aka R and R enterprises on line. Less than £200. A great shelter for long distance backpacking journeys. Sandy

Great review. How would you lighten your load for next time. I note your advice re the weight of the pack. I use an old New Zealand made framed pack which is quite light. But there are more modern light weight style packs about now. I try to put everything into plastic bags, which saves a lot of weight.

A real useful debrief on kit used. I have the same osprey pack as you. I like it a lot. Did you need to seem seal your hex peak. Thanks for the info sandy.

No I did not and still have not sealed my Hexpeak and it has served me very well for many camps this year.

That's useful to know, a buddy of mine has a luxe mini peak and first time he used it, it leaked badly so had to seam seal it. Thinking of getting a hex peak myself. We're planning a highland trip ourselves next May, so thank you very much for replying. Appreciated. Thank you sandy. Regards Shane.

+OOA WILD CAMPING Probably. But I am not on here just to get subscribers. In general folk will judge a channel based on it's content and authenticity and that is more important to me. I like to think they will stay or leave based on content rather than comments:) Yes it's good to reply to comments but when your channel or in my case channels, business etc grows it just becomes too time consuming to reply to everyone.

If you wanted to get the Scottish feel and save money at the same time you could have got a carton of Tenents Lager and a couple of bottles of scotch and stayed home.
