This recording has always been a mystery for me. The playing features so many technical inaccuracies and amateurish mistakes that I just cannot believe it was made by Cziffra. And if it is I might have assumed that he was either drunk or sightreading the piece. Even in the slow movement there are a lot of missed notes, rolled chords that Cziffra would have been able to reach easily without rolling them and also the piano this was recorded on sounds like it hasn’t been taken care of for decades. The recording is listed as a private recording from the 5th of July, 1974. What do you think?

I agree with you, this doesn't sound like Cziffra. Maybe it's a recording of him practicing or indeed sight-reading?

Cziffra could be drunk, stoned and blindfolded and still play piano better than 99.9% of humanity.

Considering that this recording was played back in the mid-70s, I think it played well. It fits well with his tone and style at that time. I believe his mechanical superiority didn't last long because of the harsh torture and labor in the 1940s. He regained his skills in the mid-1950s and maintained it until 1963 and then declined continuously, despite continued exercise. Instead, he put a lot of his musical discretion into it, and this recording portrays it.

This recording is indeed an oddity. I agree that it does sound like he might have had a few too many drinks before recording this. But either way, although it’s not at all the best, it is still an enjoyable listening experience for me
