So, time for another side-story. I got up this morning to feed Rafferty, and his favourite show was on (not sure if it is his favourite show, but he is always completely silent when it is on), the show is Bing (ok, this is a hard one to explain. Bing is an anthropomorphic rabbit, his parents have left him - he is looked after by a sack you see - now poor Bing is basically a stuff-up but it helps teach kids a lesson...oh and he has a friend that is a Panda that likes to take off his pants...yep, that's about it) Anyway, on the show Bing was playing with a decision spinner, and it reminded me of something else....
I can remember the many times I was in front of a class and had to make a decision for my students, should we do our work outside?, Revision Time, Who should volunteer next?. Things that you just can't win as a teacher (or come out the good guy anyway). That is why I let my iPad make the decision. I simply typed in what I wanted (student names, the next project topic, etc) and gave it a spin. You will be surprised how effective something like this is when the students belive the choice is out of your hand (though I did cheat a couple of times...watch the video).
LESSON IDEAS:
No doubt you can think of many times something like this would have come in handy; picking a student to go next, what topic to explore, the next project to work on, when a lesson is due, if we should work outside, what sport to play next, leave class early....I am sure you can think of many more..
