I actually don't find the "ingroup/outgroup" critique of Decoding especially convincing because I just don't think the hosts ever lionize their listeners or even appeal to them 1/100th as much as either the IDW crowd (who will constantly spout things like, "a lot of people don't know this", "we're truth-seekers", "traditional media won't talk about this", etc) or traditional pundits who would just frame themselves as the "good" in a battle with "evil" full stop, no nuance. I think Chris and Matt would (accurately) claim that their audience probably has a lot of good and bad people in it and so do the audiences of many of their targeted "gurus". In that way, it's *kind of* a critique of the left in that it's not motivational or positive, but it's also a strength. Having the balls to say, "these moral issues are really complicated, not everything is black and white, many people in new media have narrow expertise but apply it too broadly, etc" is not going to get someone to carry a flag into battle. It is precisely the academic, nuanced, context-driven approach of Decoding and of the left generally that renders it so ineffective in promoting change. So it's not that Decoding paints themselves as gigabrains and their targets as morons, it's the fact that they refuse to do so that could actually be considered a criticism.

This was very good! I’m guilty of being a secular materialist fan of the DtG podcast and this was a very fair assessment. ❤

It's great to see this dialogue developing, imo its the most interesting thing to happen in 'this little corner' in a while. I loved your treatment of the matter, really balanced and thoughtful 🙏✨
