Probably is one of my favourite songs from the album - great to hear how it was put together. The main drum sample with the ride/crash cymbal all the way through is epic. Thanks.

I''ve always loved Endtroducing as an album along with funk and soul in it's own right but his ear for picking out samples and working them together is second to none!

It really comes down to the producer being able to hear when a break or a sound is special and worth building a track around. Shadow is definitely one of the best at digging and finding new and interesting material to work with.

This is an awesome breakdown! Here is the thing I LOVE Orion by Metallica and I LOVE The Number Song but I was today years old when I found out is was sampled. How did I not hear that?

I remember a really really old article where he talked about the preamp on his generic DJ mixer. IIRC he said everything was sampled though that. That could answer the question you were having at 9:00

That's a great point. It's impossible for me to say for sure without talking to Josh about it, but my guess is that the overall EQ of the drums/samples was likely a stylistic choice made by Shadow and Dan The Automator in post production rather than the result of that preamp on his mixer. It's just such a drastic change that I can't imagine a preamp doing that, but I am often wrong, so take that for what it's worth.

I never would have guessed that he sampled Metallica. The obscure funk songs were kinda what I'd expect but Metallica, that must have been a nightmare to get clearance for.

That Metallica connection was a surprise to me too! I read some interviews where he obviously didn't want to disclose where that bass came from (and now I know why...). Before I knew what it was, I was pretty sure that it was an obscure cello sample going through a chorus pedal or something along those lines.

@@KarlBoltzmann Why do you think he didn't want to disclose where the sample was from? Did it have to do with copyright or wasn't it obscure enough?
@KarlBoltzmann
3 жыл бұрын
@@Matisto1 My guess is because Metallica has a history of being very litigious and protective of their musical properties. Naming Metallica in the interview would have brought extra scrutiny and possible legal issues. Also to my ear it's obscured enough in the mix that I'm pretty sure that even Metallica wouldn't have immediately identified it even if they somehow listened to DJ Shadow's The Number Song.

It's so weird when I'm watching these videos and I hear something that's so familiar, but from a different context. In this case, it was the Grandmaster Flash sample around 12:06. I had to pause the video to go find out where I knew that from. Anyway, it turns out it was used as a sample on the Beastie Boys song Alright Hear This off Ill Communication. Great job on the video, as usual! Not my fav Entroducing track either, but I do really love the bass and drums hit right off the top.

Yes! nice ear dude. I recognized it too because It has such a unique cadence but I couldn't figure out which track it was sampled in. Here's a link to the Beastie Boys - 'Alright Hear This' where the sample comes in for anyone curious kzitem.info/news/bejne/so2rmoN9m4ukh6A

That Orion sample is awesome. Entroducing was the first DJ Shadow album I ever purchased and have listened to it front to back many times, and growing up listening to Metallica, especially Kill 'Em All and Master of Puppets, I never picked that up. Is there some other effect or phase issue happening around 7:55 when you've just recompiled the drums from The Third Guitar sample? It sounds like a bit like a phone ringing, but maybe it's something to do with the transience? Sounds like some kind of funky feedback. It can still be heard in DJ Shadow's track too.
@KarlBoltzmann

Again, really good ear! I meant to talk about that a little bit. The "phone ringing" sound is the tone difference between samples of the drummer on the ride cymbal. Because the samples that are taken are far apart from each other in the drum break the tone changes abruptly with each hit and it's absolutely audible. I think Shadow turned down a bit more of the high than I did with the EQ to counter that effect, because it's definitely more audible in my cut.
