In this breakdown and song analysis we see a PERFECT example of how to blend tried and true gospel music theory ideas into pop songwriting and production. Tight drums and bass and a smooth rnb vocal mixed with some organ, choir, and gospel piano chords. Make sure to check out Part 2 where I build a track based on what I heard here when it comes out!
A special mention of Bieber’s vocals- for which both the performance, production, and recording are stellar. I love the amount of dynamics in his performance, and they didn’t just crush it with so much compression that it loses it’s character and life. Mix wise- we hear the vocal as loud as you’ll hear it in any pop song, but it still feels good. By the end of the track when there are SO MANY THINGS going on, we can still hear Bieber cutting through clear as day.
This is also a song FULL of references and wearing its influences on its sleeve. The chord progression and arrangement remind me immediately of The Fugees version of “No Woman No Cry” and Chance The Rapper pays some serious homage to Andre 300 in the rap section.
