In this reaction and song analysis we see how to craft a hit that is beautiful and simple. While there’s nothing groundbreaking about this track, they use every music theory, songwriting, and production trick in the book to keep the listener engaged and give our ears something to feast on. Especially great is their use of chord melody, kick+bass groove, short repeated melodic ideas, and an ending drop chorus. On the mix side of things, we get a truly great vocal recording and production, with an aggressive up-front vocal that stays dry in the center despite PLENTY of effects (delay and reverb) going to the sides of the stereo image.

As I note in the video, this genre of “emo-rap” has a few staples that are tried and true because of how effective they are. First and foremost is the use of short, repeated melodic patterns and ideas that change with each section of the song. It makes each section it’s own tiny little hook. It’s crazy, but by the end of this EXTREMELY short tune, your ear actually has about 6 hook melodies to latch on to and keep singing all day in your head. This is pop craft at its finest.
