I’m always amazed at how under appreciated the Beatle’s Yellow Submarine soundtrack songs were, even by the Beatles themselves. I consider It’s All Too Much an incredible freakout of musical ideas, Hey Bulldog has one of their most compelling riffs (even if it’s played on piano) and then ‘Only a Northern Song’ is a great companion to All Too Much with its intricate textures and sounds. All Together Now works perfectly in the film, but lacks the complexity or durability of the other three songs. If they developed the lyrics a bit more, these could have been true classics, but I’ll continue to enjoy them as the under-appreciated gems these are.

This is arguably one of the strangest and most avant-garde songs in their catalogue. The organ dissonances and clusters are something you wouldn't hear in pop music much, or in many places outside of Messiaen's organ pieces. The random little trumpet bits and sound effects are more in the vein of Frank Zappa or The Residents.

Never in a million years would I have dreamed I would hear all these songs with isolated parts. You guys don't understand, in 1979 we used to have to drive 40 miles to NYC to buy all the bootlegs like the Decca auditions, Live At The Star Club and all those works-in-progress like "Let it be" with Paul calling out the chords to the other Beatles. These bootlegs cost forty bucks and the lps were a bizzare fluorescent yellow or fluorescent green. 1 person would buy the album and then pass it along to friends. Thanks for another great deconstruction GO GEORGE FABS4EVER

One massive, great big, fat like. And I didn't even use to like this song. Because of its arrangement and the cool, trippy instrumentation I realise the real psychedelic work of art it truly is by George Harrison and the subject matter ought to be adressed as well. But my favourite will always be the even more epic pyschedelic rocker "It's All Too Much" off "Yellow Submarine". Truly Harrison was the neglected Beatle that two of his greatest songs appeared on an undervalued album making only two of four originals that were discarded before. But at least they made it into the great film that it was.

'Northern Song' is an interesting curio, but 'It's All Too Much' is a fantastic song. Sgt Pepper would have been stronger had they replaced 'Good Morning, Good Morning' with it. And maybe 'Fixing A Hole' with 'Baby You're A Rich Man'.
@splitimage137.
3 жыл бұрын
I believe "It's All Too Much" was completed only a few days before Sgt. Pepper was released. I always thought "Good Morning Good Morning" and "Sgt. Pepper (reprise)" the weakest tracks on the album, but I don't know how well "It's All Too Much" would have fit on it even if it had been completed earlier. "Fixing A Hole" definitely belongs on Sgt. Pepper (imho). Putting "It's All Too Much" on the Yellow Submarine soundtrack with only 3 other new songs was a crime, though.
@Fantumh

Good Morning Good Morning is a great song and a much needed rock track before the closing and Fixing a Hole is one of my favorite Paul songs. Meanwhile When I'm 64 is dreck, She's Leaving Home is a bit too precious sounding, and Lovely Rita is rather throw-away. I mean if we're going to look back on what could have been...
@GheberAlien

@@splitimage137. well, it actually looks like It's All Too Much was finished much later on June 2nd, 1967. But actually, this song Northern Song could go down well with Sgt. @GheberAlien

@@Fantumh if I were George Martin, I would've put Strawberry Fields in Sgt. Peppers and would've released Penny Lane and When I'm 64 as a single.
