Hi, first of all sorry if this is strange commenting on an old video. And not to tell you what to do but what helps me with my boys throwing food around is a ceramic hooded bird feeder cup. They're most frequently used in pet stores and with breeders of birds of all sizes but hard to find sold in pet stores because I assume they were originally made for a large quantity of animals like a situation a pet shop or breeder would have. So they're expensive online because they're sort of a luxury I guess. I secure them onto the side of their cage with the fastner it comes with. I felt a medium size was big enough for my small boy rats but for big rat boys I'd reccomend the large size. People also use the large sized ones for ferrets (those are made for huge parrots and those are $30 and hard to find online but worth it). I personally thought if they dont waste their food with it then you know it works lol because ferrets are naughty. I mean it really saves money too if any pet just quits throwing their food out. I also use them so my rats won't fight over the food or lay in their bowl because when they'd end up falling asleep in it they'd poop/pee in there which really wastes the food and is not good for them. Thanks for your time.

Those pans seem so much better than the plastic ones that come with the cage! Mine have been chewed through quite a bit, and think this would be perfect! And it definitely seems like a reasonable price too. Do you recommend, and how do they hold up to the rats and cleaning?
@ratgirl44

+Desarae Alba the price of the pans is reasonable. However the shipping is insane. So far the rats have not chewed them. They can't because they are metal.

Apologies if this question has been asked, but do you know generally how strong the scent of rats are (about 2-4 living together, same sex), and how often you should spot clean to keep the smell down? Just an inquiry for future reference, thank you!
@leahtift630

xysllekscjason It really depends on the rats themselves, the type of bedding, and the size of the cage. Larger cages tend to have less stink and litter trained rats are definitely a lot less stinky. I spot clean every two days and fully clean the cage once a week (I have two male rats in a DCN, which is the same cage shown in this video). Good luck!

+xysllekscjason I clean their cage weekly. I have a sensitive nose and to me they stink about 2 days after I clean it. The boys are def worse!

I had you subbed awhile back & had to change my user name , but happy I found you again Yeah. This is what has been bothering me about my DCN the holes. If I was to hose it down , there are no holes in the bottom of the bars for the water to drain out . This summer I was going to give it a huge scrub outside . Was worried it would start to rust inside the bars :( I'm small enough , so I can get way inside the bottom & wipe all the bars /wires down . BTW I'm a small adult , not that it matters LOL Seems to be a lot of work by hand Whew .Always Loved your ideas on care & feeding :)P.S . My cage is 1- 1/2 years old & I only have 2 Rat girls that are litter trained . No smell as of yet after it's washed out by hand ..

I like to watch your Rat vids. I'm so sad that I can't get a Critter Nation in Australia, unless I spent $1k + to buy and import one. What kind of cage would you recommend for someone like me? Perhaps a Ferret nation?

I know someone who has one, I'm not sure how many are around though. I might have to settle for one of the Ferret/Rat cages I've found online Dimensions are 95cm(L) x 58cm(W) x 136cm(H) 4 levels. I've had rats before but the cage I had I sold and I'm looking for something bigger this time :) The only thing that makes me question getting Rats are their health issues

hello! your videos are wonderful! i have a question if i can ask? we adopted a little female rat, amazing! , a week ago, then went back on friday to get her a friend since she was lonely. it's her biological sister, same enclosure as our first rat. this girl is sweet but very, very shy. and she's been sneezing almost constantly. our first doesn't sneeze at all. should we be worried?
@ratgirl44
8 жыл бұрын
+Kelley Cook sometimes rats get "new home sneezes" however this can easily turn into a full blown respiratory infection. So I would only give it a few days and if she's not better take her to the vet.

What would you recommend for rat mites?

Katie Glass Hopefully you aren't still having this issue but if you are I'd recommend using Revolution, the version for kittens. You can order it online & there's guides on how to use it. It cleared up our mite issue within a week :).

Katie Glass www.pets-megastore.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=165_6_159&products_id=384 Is the place I got it from and the cheapest you'll find it, but ensure that it is mites before ordering. You can't see mites as they are, well, mircoschopic and the only thing you'll be able to see is the aftermath. Lots of scabs, typically around the head, shoulders and lower back (but they can be anywhere)
@KatieGlass4595

Myscin Wow still pretty pricey.. thanks though & yep I'm sure it's mites!
