According to Ian Gillan, this song was in protest at the USA's conflict in Vietnam, glad you took a look at this classic, Deep Purple are iconic

No unfortnutaley you must have misunderstood that. Gillan says it's about the cold war. Therefore Child In Time was forbidden in the east until the Sovjetunion fall apart.

It was about the cold war, but we can associate it with war in general way, we can feel it in the song, the fear, the crying, the mess that happens when innocent people are in the middle of a conflict, how they feel when the shooting starts and how they try to escape among all the caps around. This song is like an opera, with parts that represents a war.

He can repeat it, because he is not screaming but rather is singing. Gillan is a countertenor that you can observe hits, sustains, has vibrato control as well as changing pitch to related notes during this section of “screams.” Few have done this as well as Ian Gillan in the late 60s /early 70s.

This brings me right back to the days when we were genuinly concerned about each other! Times have changed. In a way we were so innocent, and full of ideals. These ideals have vanished in the thick smoke of corporate life. In a way the organ is for me the underllying sound of all 70's music.

I was part of a big outdoor music theatre production in 2014 where this song was part of the pre-show. Our version, despite being performed live in a stone quary for 4 shows in a week, sounded very similar to the studio recording of this song. If I can find you a video of that I will definitely send it to you.

WOW - Really a lot to say here, so let's try to keep it short ! I saw Deep Purple at the Palasport in Rome on March 10th 1973 - a couple of months after Genesis (January 23rd - one of their first 'arena' gigs), a week before Jethro Tull (March 16th) and 3 weeks before Traffic (March 30th) … All this to say that it was a time of REAL 'live' music - of REAL legendary musicians and iconic LPs (Albums, as they are now known) : 'In Rock', 'Foxtrot', 'Aqualung', 'Mr. Fantasy' etc. etc. And, by the way, this was a 'simple' performance in a TV studio (notice the huge camera) - in many cases the audience was told to 'behave', but most of the time they were actually shocked from not having ever seen, nor heard, anything like that ever before !!! It was music that tought and inspired generations to this very day, and probably many more to come ! After watching this reaction I wondered '… how the hell (and back :-) can I go from this to BLACKPINK DIARIES ?!?' - but actually the answer came quite fast and simple - The 'journey', in my case, has most definitely been a long one, but now they are the ones - possibly the only ones - capable of making me happy, and smile

greetings from germany....great reaction as always....Bruce Dickinson´s favorite singer, he said that Ian Gillan was his inspiration and had a big influence to him......funny thing is the audience in the back...ok, they have been told to act calm and reserved cause it was a TV recording. ...but i´m sure most of them were actualy reserved cause they didnt know whats going on...they never heard something like that before, remember, it was 1970....
