When I saw it though, I was amazed at how fun it was, especially when trying to guess who would survive and who wouldn't. a perfect classic of the genre, that explores the horror under the deeps of sea, in a gruesome fashion, aside share a scene with the tittle page of the film itself, a unusual, and perhaps unique example, when a travel in the ocean turns into a hideous odyssey, a total battle for the survival against the unthinkable.

It's funny, there were four big Hollywood "GREAT IDEA!" trends that occured in my childhood. First, we had Underwater Science Fiction. (Leviathan, DS6, Abyss). Then we had Dinosaurs (Carnosaur, Jurassic Park, many other low budget schlock), then we had volcanoes (Volcano, Dante's Peak, others), then we had space disaster movies, (Armageddon, Deep Impact, The TV movie "Meteor" and other low budget copy cats.) Just rather interesting. I've never seen Deep Star Six. I might have to check it out. I loved Leviathan.

Ahh, yes, 1989. That was the year The Abyss came out and almost every studio out there wanted to rush their own knockoff into theatres before it dropped. @djhenyo

Volcano and Dante's Peak, Deep Impact and Armageddon, and the list goes on forever. Movie makers realized that the big studios were either unable or unwilling to risk putting out sequels for their films when people were craving them, and so either another big studio or an independent production would fill in the blank space with whatever shlock they could muster. Sometimes they would be years apart, like ET and Mac & Me or Star Wars and The Last Starfighter. People wanted more ET or Star Wars, and somebody had to step up to get the job done.
