Deer tracking dog training can be a lot of fun for both the dog and the trainer. If you've ever had a deer tracking dog find your deer then you know the sense of gratitude you feel towards these skillful K-9's. So how do you train a deer tracking dog? You start small, practice often, and then grow from there. Take them in the woods when you've shot a deer and let them get a sense of the excitement and the smell. They will sense your excitement and associate finding deer as a big accomplishment for their master. Make sure you give them a lot of verbal confirmations of "good boy" to encourage their excitement and reinforce their behavior. Once you have a deer down you can take the hide and use it for several days of training. You can also collect the blood of a deer as it's being cleaned into a bucket and then transfer it to a milk jug for storage. Also, you can slice a fresh deer hide into several piece and freeze them in bags for future practice.
On practice day always start with short runs. Start at 10 yards, then 20 yards, 30 yards, etc. Be sure to reward them with verbal confirmations and keep a few treats in your pocket for reassurance and rewards. Make sure when you turn the dog loose that you give him/her a unique code word that they will associate only with tracking deer. My code word is "work" and you'll hear me say it throughout the video. This is the only time I every use this word so that he'll know exactly what it means...it means business!
A lot of hunters always wonder how to train a dog to track deer? Here are a few tips to get you started:
1. Start with short runs-make it easy until they figure out what they are doing
2. Use a command work like "work" and reward them with verbal and treats
3. If using the same field for practice keep moving down the line and keep the dog from crossing old paths that you've already practiced on. You always want him on a fresh trail.
4. Practice often-freeze slices of deer hide in zip lock bags for future practice
Thanks for watching and let me know if I can help in any way!
