My brand new Denali is having the same issue. Everywhere I look it says "drive over 30mph." I can only GET to 30mph+ if I'm going down hill!!! And where can I drive long distance without stopping/starting all the time? NOWHERE. So that means I have to get on the interstate and drive along the shoulder, flashers on, and try to go as fast as I can for 70 minutes. TWICE. Complete bullshit. Once I get it going and drive it around for 1000 miles or so, just to give it a good shake down, all of that shit is coming off.

@zaappp1588

There ought to be TWO class action lawsuits against the EPA. One for all this emissions horseshit on diesels, including newer tractors. It reduces the life of the engines. Adds enormous costs to operate due to failed emissions parts that deteriorate engines and turbos that reduce performance, longevity, but most importantly FUEL MILEAGE which means even though you may be emitting less pollution per gallon of fuel, you are using far more fuel to travel the same distance which means you are emitting MORE POLLUTION. So you emit the same amount of pollution if not MORE and you've added thousands of dollars to the cost of the vehicle up front and additional thousands in replacement emissions parts and repairs over the life of the vehicle which is further reduced because of the emissions equipment ruining diesel engines and clogging turbos. Furthermore, the DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) that is mandatory in 2010 and newer diesel trucks has got to be the biggest scam since the invention of the automobile. DEF is 67% water and 33% urea. What is urea? It is the major component in URINE! That's right, PISS! So if you own a newer diesel vehicle, the EPA has mandated that your truck or car have a second tank that holds toilet water and is injected into the EXHAUST stream...yep...bypass the engine and right out the tailpipe. Somebody's making a killing on this and laughing their ass off. And add another class action lawsuit to remove ethanol from fuel which is responsible for millions, if not billions of dollars of damage to automobile and small engines. Even the EPA has admitted that Ethanol damages gasoline engines because it first, "leans the [air/fuel] ratio (increases the proportion of oxygen relative to hydrocarbons) which can lead to increased exhaust gas temperatures and potentially increase incremental deterioration of emission control hardware and performance over time, possibly causing catalyst failure." And, second, because "ethanol can cause materials compatibility issues.... like fuel systems, deteriorating plastic and silicone components such as hoses, fuel pumps and filters, gas tanks, and fuel injectors" and reduced fuel mileage.

The biggest problem in these DEF setups is the lack of heat in order to start the regeneration action. But for those who drive and stop for pickups and dropoffs, it can't get hot enough in-between them - causing the error warnings and preventing the vehicle from going any faster than 40mph or so. Reason #27,201 why government ruins everything.

DEF and DPFs are THE reason I will never buy a new diesel vehicle. They have literally killed the diesel engine with these things. Anyone looking to get into a diesel should just go buy the model before they introduced DEF and DPF for whichever vehicle you want, then just keep putting money into rebuilding the mechanical parts and fixing up the body panels, instead of paying off a loan (if you buy with loans). There are PLENTY of parts out there from wrecked vehicles.

DEF/Diesel Exhaust Fluid and DPF/Diesel Particulate Filter are expensive to replace and repair. All diesel engines over 25HP are required by the EPA/Environmental Protection Agency to have either a DEF or DPF to reduce emissions. Mahindra is the only company that has built a diesel engine without a DEF or DPF and is able to meet the EPA standards. They use a DOC/Diesel Oxidation Catalyst.DOC technology provides for unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and some particulate matter to be broken down thermally - without flame - by passing them through platinum and palladium catalyst beds in the presence of exhaust heat and what oxygen is left in the exhaust stream after combustion. No added cost to buy DEF, no regen cycle and no expensive DPF to clean or replace. DOC is claimed to last for the life of the engine.

i have two years experience 200k miles with dpf and def on dd15's three of em. i also took 2 plus years of diesel mechanic classes. while otr i only experinced emission problems. what I have found out is that you need to first understand the system. the system begins in the intake. its sensors begin from the throttle body control. so what i have learned is that you should have the engine program that will let you see the regn temps, one yime per year have a blow test yo see if your filter is clog and collection wiegh in. there are specs on that. another huge problem is letting water in the exhaust pipes. is makes all that soot turn into a rock and blocks the exhaust which causes more heat to the heads and cause major damage. dont ignore them reg lights on your dash. itll void your warranty and youll be fucked.

while I sympathize with your frustrations, emissions control devices are not "bs" completely, and black smoke has nothing to do with nox emissions which are the real problem

Yup I hate these new diesel trucks. We have a 2013 Silverado with that dpf filter. The other week the truck kept going into regen mode and wouldn’t go over 25mph even after we’ve tried doing multiple Regen cycles. Chevy dealer couldn’t figure it out. Turned out to be the DEF fluid injector. So much time and money wasted trying to diagnose the problem.

the reason for DEF to reduce Nitrous Oxide emissions, not soot. NOx emissions cause acid rain and repertory problems. Soot is taken care of by the particulate filter, that's just burned off by high exhaust temps. DEF has the ability to drastically improve air quality, something I hope you would agree is a good thing.

I was talking about how gasoline when burned in an engine is actually more harmful to the environment than diesel engines. Sorry I wasn't clear!
@bradfordjhart

+American Raichu that's not accurate, gas engines are cleaner than diesel but new diesel engines with DEF systems close the gap substantially. if you lookup US emissions standards you can see for yourself

I don't understand folks with these tuners and shit on diesels.. A diesel is made for POWER and TOWING. If you want a race vehicle, go get you a car made for it. These diesel trucks are made for towing power/work, not racing..

These engine sensors are looking for a value, we need to find a way to give them what they are looking for. The values are in a voltage from the sensor. This could be accomplished by resistors.

That code is only derived from the nox sensors. If a sensor is bad. It can say the urea is poor quality.

I agree there is no reason why the US needs NOx and PM standards that are way more stringent than Europe. A lot of auto manufacturers do not import their diesels to the US because it is so difficult to comply with the stringent emissions standards. The US should just use Europe's more reasonable diesel emissions requirements.

Never owned a diesel truck before, But i had an 07 Dodge Ram 1500. Cut the Cats off and did straight pipe with a 7 inch packed exhaust tip. Whats funny was it was getting over 30 mpg some days with the wind blowing the same way as me i could get 40 on the highway going 75mph. This was just one of the few things that i did to the truck. It also had a 6 Speed Standard. Just about EVERY SINGLE PART that has to do with fuel emissions control actually takes your gas mileage and shoves it down the drain. The funny part?? You NEVER smell rich fuel or un-burned gas from my truck after the cats removed and the other stuff that i did to it. 40 extra thousand miles later it is still running like it was fresh off of the dealership lot. Honestly? i do not blame you for the complaint on the DEF fluid BULLSHIT. Because thats exactly what it is! Extra shit that pollutes the air, not clean it. Your basically taking fuel to burn fuel. Pointless. Possibly what you could do, But in theory, is Cutt the shit off, Scrap it, or sell it on ebay or something. Possibly reprogram the ECU? or buy an aftermarket ECU to reprogram with a custom firmware thats deleted the DEF Emissions and Controls.

How did you fix it ? These are the same issues I am having. I have had my exhaust system cut open, clean-out, new cannister filter installed, both DEP and DEF muffler looking Containers and and piping from motor hook-up to the end of the tailpipe baked by a Turbo Diesel and Electric shop, all sensors were tested and the ones that failed were replaced. I removed the DEF tank (fluid was clear as water), removed all DEF fluid, tank heater cleaned and wiped dry all parts associated with tank (found nothing, everything was clean as a whistle) including hoses and one way valve) reinstalled DEF tank making sure ALL wire and connection were proper and tight. Fill tank with 5 gallons of ACDelco (tank holds 6.5 gallons which means I did not over fill by instruction on ACDelco jug) dated 5/27/2021 (performed on 7/28/2021) Plastic Jug from ACDelco stated fluid shelf life was 2 years (expires 5/26/2023). Replaced both thermostats because by the Tech 2 they were not heating up the truck enough and the 70 minute test only lasted 21 minutes and showed failed test not hot enough. Tried to use the GM Tech 2 computer to perform test for LML Durmax 6.6L Diesel and it still shows Exhaust Fluid Quality Poor Message. I purchased the DEF fluid at the dealership. How did you fix or clear the check engine light, the other signal light with the curve lines and the DIC message Exhaust Fluid Quality Poor and See Owner's Manual ? Your video did not go that far.

If diesel exhaust ceases to be regulated, and their operation goes back to what was "normal" decades ago, there should be an explosion in gas mask sales. Energy consumption will have to go up just to filter indoor air even when there is no need for heating or cooling. The most economical option is to treat the exhaust as it comes out, and just add that cost to the bill for doing the job the vehicle is used for.

How many extra emissions are created by all these DEF regen that vehicles now have to do?If DEF really the answer? No, need better engineering on the motors.

Agreed. I think DEF is a stop gap at best. Sort of like compact fluorescent bulbs which quickly fell out of favor as soon as LED bulbs got cheap enough. Something better will come around and DEF will be forgotten, except for the poor bastards that are stuck with it. We certainly can't go on like this. Companies and owner/operators can't afford all the breakdowns.

Damn straight. My dad owns a 2012 KW T660 with the DEF crap, and the computer threw out a bad code with the DEF even though the truck was full. We missed out on an entire night's work just because of some bad code from the stupid computer. Recently he also had to get his computer replaced because the computer kept saying that it needed to regen which cost him about $500 or more. DEF is stupid, and nothing but a nuisance brought to you by EPA.

If its gonna pass the rfqt itll do it in under 10 minutes, if its been 20 minutes i would just shut it down replace your nox sensors and try again. Typically nox 2 and the def injector are the problems keeping it from passing.
