At some point, there will be a Watershed Event after which time the general public will start to understand just how little privacy they have on the Internet, what the true cost of all the "free" services are they receive, and they'll want an alternative.
I talk about what that alternative might look like, and call viewers to take action and start building, so that when that Watershed Event does happen, we'll be ready with a solution.
I gave this talk at DefCon 20. This was right before Edward Snowden went public; the "Watershed Event" I speak of here could have been the Snowden documents, history will tell. It has certainly raised awareness, but I'm only beginning to see action being taken.
It was a SkyTalk, which aren't normally filmed, but I requested that it be. The original is hosted on the Internet Archive at archive.org/de... I'm posting here so I can include in my Other Appearances playlist.
