We try to defeat Winter on the Appalachian Trail by using some specific techniques and gear to stay drier, warmer and overall more comfortable. It's a work in progress but hopefully this helps someone. Share your techniques in the Comments!!
1. We use a thermometer so we know when temps are below freezing (ThermoDrop)

2. We've found mesh base layers superior to the more traditional "closted knit" design used in most hiking base layers (Brynje)

3. We like rain mitts, either on their own, or over wool mittens (Mountain Laurel Designs)

4. Disposable hand warmers inside mittens. Electronic hand warmers are nice but need to be recharged (Ocoopa UT2s)

5. Fast water filters reduce the time we are loosing heat from our hand while squeezing them. We like collapsible bottles that can stay attached so we can keep them in a pocket/quilt without leaking (HydraPak and BeFree)

6. Water containers with handles are nice so we don't lose as much heat from our hands when we carry water back to camp from the water source (HydraPak Seeker)

7. A Shamwow towel with 2 gal Ziploc works great to keep wet things from freezing overnight when stuffed in our quilt
www.shamwow.com/
8. Warm feet with wool and waterproof socks under trail runners with lock laces and gaitors (SmartWool Socks, Randy Sun WP Socks, Xero, Dirty Girl Gaitors, Lock Laces)
9. Down booties are the only thing we've found will warm our feet up quickly at camp after walking all day in the snow (Western Mountaineering)

10. We keep our quilt dry inside a 10L DCF compression bag (Hyperlite Mountain Gear)

Good luck out there!
