Some people like the elderly can't cut their own toe nails and look after them properly. Than you have people that have arthritis that makes it impossible for them to look after their toe nails properly like me lol. A lot of people don't have anyone in their lives that will help them with things like that. The only thing they can do is to go to a doctor. I have the same problem but mine are curled in and dug into both my big toes and is why I watched this video. Well explained video and informative. Thank You for recording it. I wanted to know somewhat of what to expect when I have this operation. I had a friend cut away the sides but they just grow back right into my toes. I can only hope to get a doctor that is as good as this one is.

Dr. Richard, I know this was filmed a few months ago but I was wondering if you also clipped the other toe nails while your patient was there. My dad has his podiatrist clip his nails because he's old and can't reach them easily. Since starting to visit the podiatrist his feet and toes have become far less painful.

hi I have had a ingrown nail removed on my big toe and they used phenol I believe to kill the roots on the sides of the nail. my question is what should you expect the recovery to feel and look like mines is very sore for a couple weeks and it stinks. can I send a pict of it it has been 3 weeks I have had them removed before but not poisoned and it really hurts and the skin is peeling back

Jeremy Vuozzo in some people it forms a thickened skin. Nail polish can even be put on it in some cases. It never grows in length, and in some it is softer than others.

If your toe nail was Never like this until recently along with a spur and this is done without killing the root, can the nail grow back normally?

he said in another person that the root becomes also deformed and so the nail we grow the same unfortunately.

i have a deformed toe and nail and was trimming it today 06/25/2017. I ended pulling the whole nail off. Is it too late to go to the doc. and get it pemenantly removed or keep it from growing back. It was bleeding some and was just trying to stop the bleeding.
@RichardEby
7 жыл бұрын
Dave Tremayne usually, there has to be some nail there for the doctor to remove and immediately apply the phenol to cauterize the root or matrix and make it permanent. In other words, when the nail comes off, the open area usually closes up quickly, and it is unlikely to get the phenol in the right spot. You still should see a podiatrist, however, as you may end up with an infection. An antibiotic may be necessary, and I find that sometimes there is still some nail present, so it is still possible (in some cases) to do a permanent removal.

Why did you need to kill the root? Why couldn't you let the nail grow back?
@RichardEby
8 жыл бұрын
+Zoey Kiss You can let the nail grow back, and we always give patients that option. The problem is that the root or matrix of the nail "programs" the nail to grow the way it does, and when it becomes deformed or thickened, the root is also deformed. So if you remove the nail and do not kill the root, 90% of the time it will come back the same as it was before. Thanks for your question, Zoey.

@Xpenguin - that is why Dr. Gilmore is referred to as "Slappy Gilmore".
@RichardEby

Zoey Kiss it would grow back the same way if you do not kill the root, since the matrix (root) "programs" it to grow the way it does. It is always the patient's choice whether to do permanent or temporary.

So i had 2 big toe nails with fungus, a doctor cut both of them all the way up close to the root and gave me a nail polish to apply, one nail grew all the way back with no fungus and the other one never grew back at all and showing no new growth from the root :( the other day i banged in on somsthing which pealed up the bottem of it and i was able to cut with nail clippers all the way to the root . and i was able to remove the fungus that had been under the nail. can u please give me some advice for growing this nail back, maybe i can send u a picture through email so u can see what im working with. i had the problem only 1 year also but it never started growing at all ! PLEASE RESPOND

Just cutting the nail "all the way back" will usually not prevent the nail from growing back. The root or matrix of the nail is under the skin, behind the nail, and a little deeper than most people think. Using a topical antifungal medication, as I assume that is what you were applying, does a better job when the nail has been removed or cut back most of the way. It would not prevent the nail from growing back. I am not sure what is going on with the nail that did not grow back, but there is no way that you can make it grow back.

I would love to get the nails removed because I walk on the side of those toes and the nails tend to be really thick and hard to cut. There are many times I end up cutting some of the nail bed as well which can be painful. They are not ingrown nor are painful if I keep them short. it's just hard to keep them clipped.

ive had a tiny part of my nail removed due to it being ingrown, and the only part that hurt were the numbing shots. it was awful. my leg was spazzing out, kicking around involuntarily. my nail is growing back because my doctor didnt remove the root, though. he didnt remove it because i was just clipping it wrong and wearing shoes too tight, so he said the root would be okay still and would make the nail grow back normally.
@RichardEby

bellaaa most of the time, if the injections are done right, there is some discomfort but not severe pain. It often depends on where you inject it....the base of the toe is MUCH better than anywhere near the nail or tip of the toe.
