we dehydrate the liquid from the can separately. it becomes crystals and the a quick blitz will turn that into aqua faba powder. a tbs of that with water is the best egg replacer in baking etc. So if you are vegan of if we have a shortage of egg availability you have a way to coat veggies for batter to stick or replace an egg wherever else you need to.

I have been watching videos and reading your blog. I have a couple questions. Can I cook these soups in the jar in a microwave? And I would like to know if you book is like you website or is it recipes? I am looking for a book like your website. Simple stuff. I did purchase a book off Amazon but it was recipes. I will be trying this soup once I get some single items dehydrated. Thanks for all you do.

Thank you so much for your information and inspiration. I am having surgery on my right hand and will be unable to use a can opener for a few month, plus I can seldom eat a whole can of beans. I have dehydrated black, cannellini, large navy and garbanzo beans. I also did edamame and hominy. The garbanzo and edamame are strictly for snacking. After they were dry, I tossed them with a tiny bit of olive oil and some cajun seasoning then put them back in the dehydrator for about an hour. Yum! The hominy, I love to either fry or put in a single serving of chili. It rehydrates beautifully and I can have what I want. I am learning so much from you. Thanks!

This is such an informative prep video. It really is a good choice as you say for camping and would be a blessing for others in need to receive. I’m thinking people who are aged, physical limitations, straight home from the hospital after surgery or with a new baby, and of course those who have flown the nest and are prepping a new apartment or are away at college. It’s a real convenience when the bulk of time and effort has already been taken care of. The taco soup in a jar sounds great. I’d truly enjoy it being gifted to me. One year my family members and I received home canned vegetable beef soup and a jar of dill pickles spears from my mother-in-law as Christmas gifts. So delicious and believe me there were no complaints.

@ThePurposefulPantry
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are advantages: taking dried beans out on the trail is hard for those who need so much more energy to have enough water to soak beans and then cook them, when dehydrated beans are quick and easy. The same goes with a quick-cook meal in a jar for those who might need them in an emergency situation with limited fuel and water. Or just to make it easy on the elderly to give them a meal they can store in the pantry and not have to fuss over a lot to get a meal ready for themselves. This is a personal preference and a convenience for some. I don't cook beans, so I stock canned. And I can stock 6-8 cans in a quart jar instead of taking up precious pantry space with 6-8 cans.

The problem with this though is that you're assuming you'll have water to rehydrate that food in an SHTF event. For normal life, it's probably fine, but for SHTF, I prefer canned foods. They're already cooked and already have moisture and can be eaten right out of the can if need be.

@ThePurposefulPantry
2 жыл бұрын
It depends on how you want to do it. If you have a cooked soup first, dehydrate the soup, then it's just add hot water and give it time (or put it in a thermos and let it soak during the morning). If you want to do individual ingredients, ou can put those together, use a broth powder to add to it, so that when you add water, you still have flavor. But yes, things need time to rehydrate to eat. So an instant soup vs a 15-20 minute soup is the difference. If you cook items then dehydrate, rehydration is a little faster. Raw food dehydrated become raw food when rehydrated and still need time to cook, too.

Did you purchase a dehydrator yet? I purchased this one earlier this year: NESCO GARDENMASTER DEHYDRATOR FD-1040 from Walmart. I did a LOT of research before buying one. This one is digital and I LOVE it. I wanted to make sure I had one with a timer on it so it would turn off if I left the house with it running. 💕🌸💕

TVP crumbles and an extra blob of bouillon would add more shelf stable protein to the corn/bean combo.

We don't eat TVP, but yes, it would.

@ThePurposefulPantry can I put the meal in the jar into a vacuum saver bag instead of a jar?

Of course. And airtight container is what you need - whatever you have.

Instead of including an oxygen absorber, would vacuum sealing the jar be just as effective for long-term storage?
@ThePurposefulPantry

Yes - I rarely ever use an O2 absorber. If I'm going to seal, I use a vacuum sealer.

I seal my jars with the seal-a-meal .It pulls the air out and seals the lid

Question. I just looked up your info on dehydrating rice. You said to cook the rice. That’s without butter, oil or salt? Doesn’t it stick?
@ThePurposefulPantry

Nope - and yes, cook it without any oils.

Howlong do dehydrated beans last if you vacuum pack them?
@ThePurposefulPantry

as with not vacuum sealing since it isn't necessary - a very long time. They are beans ;)

Yep - there are quite a few lines out there with similar bodies with different branding.

Watching again. Maybe someone already asked. Will dehydrated beans last longer on the shelf than beans in its can ?
@ThePurposefulPantry

Not necessarily.

But it saves space, it makes them easy to use for camping/hiking/backpacking without the weight, and you can use them for meals in a jar.
