Deise Diary WLRFM - 18/01/2023 - Waterford Bog Oak is rare. www.waterfordb... When it is found, a delicate and expensive process begins. Using specialized equipment and people, the oak is taken from the earth and the rivers then wrapped to keep it in its form until properly dried out. More specialized tools are used to carve and create this thousands of years old wood into modern furniture, interior design, art pieces and other objects.
This is the story of the Waterford Bog Oak that you see here.
In the year 2000, which is not that long ago at all; Tom Joe Murphy of Knockanore, Co. Waterford, was going about his business on his farm land. During some digging and clearing, Tom Joe noticed something in the ground and began to pull it out. Over time, pieces of this wood were unearthed.
In October 2018, a sample of the wood was sent to Mr. David Brown of Queens University, Belfast, where 605 annual growth rings were counted. After all measurements and tests were carried out, this wood sample, (QUB reference number Q12207) was dendrochronologically dated from 1652 BC - 1048 BC.
When trees growing on dry sections of bog or beside rivers fall, they are encased by the bog growing around them or the river mud encasing them completely. There they lay, becoming preserved in an airless tomb of iron salts and minerals mixing with the tree’s own tannins until it becomes the black and dark brown wood samples we see today.
There it lay waiting to be discovered.
Tom Joe and his brother Edmund saw the beauty in this Waterford Bog Oak. Its lines, curves, cracks and rings show its years. A piece of history so ancient, telling its own story of life before falling into the watery bog and its reincarnation into what you see today.
These pieces of Waterford Bog Oak sparkle with their shapes. One looks like a fair winged maiden that was once seen on the prow of a mighty ship. Its lines like a flowing dress, its tiny curves mimicking the maiden’s hair as it drapes her face against the winds of the sea. Each unique piece has an almost mythical quality. It feels like this ancient oak wants to be seen, wants to tell you a story, wants to capture your imagination and your heart.
Edmund found the smaller pieces spoke to him in a different way. In one he saw time and thus it became a clock. Another could literally write its own story and so became a pen.
These beautiful pieces of Waterford Bog Oak are a rare piece of ancient history still speaking to us today in its various forms.
Thanks to Tom Joe and Edmund, you can experience the beauty and mystery of such pieces for yourself. You can touch history and keep in your heart forever.
