Slumping over the microphone stand, reading from a scrappy bit of paper, a total DISRESPECT to a great performer Del Shannon. I had the privilege to see play live in the 60s in England. Never forgotten. So glad his life goes on through his music and his family. Rest easy sweetheart. Not forgotten!!! XXX

When a very vocally-gifted artist like Del Shannon takes nearly 40 years for recognition in the Hall of Fame something is wrong. Del was also a promoter/writer for the British Invasion for gosh sakes. Even Elvis recognized his huge contribution to singing hard and as high as Roy Orbison. Trends like Rap music or hip-hop ought to wait for their longevity too.
@dr.reidsheftalltruthinscie2007

Not nearly the celebration that Del deserved. If he hadn't left us, George Harrison, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan were going to ask him to replace Roy Orbison in the TWs. That's the respect these greats had for Del, an ultra-talented trailblaze who happened to be an extremely down-to-Earth, gentleman. If you're wondering where the sadness in Del's songs came from, he once related an experience that affected him greatly. A girl he liked very much told him she didn't want to go to the prom with him after she had accepted, and he took it very hard.

I'm 63. I have to say that "Runaway" was one of maybe 5 songs, and I've heard a lot, that had a strong emotional impact on me and that I never get tired of it after hundreds and hundreds of times . Tom Petty knew him from way back and wanted to get Del back in the spotlight like he and Jeff Lynne had gotten Roy Orbison his 2nd wind. Jeff became friends and was proud to produce Del Shannon's final posthumous album. I hoped they would be at his induction and Lynne would sing his great cover of that song - but neither showed. Maybe they had scheduling conflicts. But I think it better to lend a hand, help a career...than attend some awards ceremony 9 years after he died. (And at the time, 1999, Jeff Lynne as a solo star and he with his band ELO were still being snubbed by the Hall of Fame.

I knew Del Shannon. I met him through his daughter Jody whom I was dating at the time. Del was an interesting guy. He and Jody had battled alcoholism and together they got sober. Del used to come into my record store and we'd talk music. I'll never forget Feb. 8, 1990. I was awoken in the middle of the night when Jody called to inform me Del had died. She wanted me to know before it hit the news. I was so saddened to hear about Jody passing away. I hadn't heard from her during her final year battling cancer. Ultimately I found out about her passing away from her brother Craig. R.I.P. Del and Jody.

rockinkb - I really believe Del Shannon would still be alive today if he'd gotten the recognition he deserved before he passed on too. He would have known then that he was truly appreciated for his writing, singing and playing. I can only think the reason he wasn't better known or charted more songs in the US was this was also around the time Elvis got popular and the British bands were coming into their own in the US. Maybe it was more 'men' for the teenaged girls to swoon over. I don't know. Or it could have been the managers of the British groups were better at promoting them than the one's Del had handling him. And if you remember, there was a lot of problems with Payola back in those days. One DJ admitted he was paid something like $23,000, I read, to play some other groups music. All I've read so far is how nice Del Shannon was toward other singers and bands and people in general. Also that he was naturally a kind man. Sure, he had a drinking problem and did drugs, but who didn't back in the day? He got help finally and got right and went on to do more with his talents. But it would have been much better to have had him around to do more of that which he loved to do. Some say he was shy, but how can that be when he always put on a great show at his concerts? I miss his music and singing and thanks to people such as yourself, the rest of us can still enjoy his music and seeing him preform. Thanks for your efforts! Best Regards, Sharon

A lot of aging rock stars struggle with the stress and depression of the road and the industry in general. True, alcohol and street drugs seem to have been his coping methods early on but at the time of his death he was needing cognitive behavioral psychotherapy - not chemotherapy to pull himself out of the funk he was in at the time. See his wife's - Lynne Westover's presentation to the FDA of what happened to him physically and mentally and musically when he started on the Prozac he was taking from a psychiatrist - (not a psychologist).

Was blessed to see Del at, of all things, a Police fundraiser dance. State Fair, Des Moines Ia. I think 1986?? Small venue, maybe 450-500 ppl. ALL of us drunk as loons, with not just Del but Lesley Gore, Bo Diddley on the card. Got to be like 12' away for Runaway, extra riffs on the synthesizer. I'll be 70 next mo but if I live to 170 I'll nvr forget it. Del was SO happy that nite with a bunch of hooligans like us in his face. He was delighted and so were we. Sidenote: so when they closed the bar & let us all out of the Fairgrounds at once, they opened a special gate. Some cpl 3 hundred cars driven by idiots(yes me too) raced out to the winds. We only had 6 blks to go; lived mighty close by. To my knowledge, nobody got popped no matter HOW far for OWI. Tbh in that era I'd bet if people DID get stopped AND had their concert/dance stub the ON-duty cops treated em gently. Wrong? I suppose. Life was simpler in those days eh?
