Hi, I'm one of the co-designers of the Nemesis. In your test, you had the Intensity knob turned all of the way down. That brings in a very aggressive low pass filter, which makes the repeats warm/dark by filtering out the highs. For a true apples-to-apples test, the Intensity knob needs to be at the noon position, pointing straight up. The Source Audio website has demos that show a pure digital passthrough tone, and we took great pains measuring with very precise equipment to make sure this digital engine was transparent as possible. In fact, all of the engines are designed to be used with the Intensity knob at noon, so unfortunately in your tests, all of the engines sound much darker than they are supposed to.

Hi Brett, thank you very much for your insight!! Having said that - so I still have the Nemesis, and I still love it dearly, but I also stand by what I said in the video. My point wasn't really about the quality of the repeats, but that the pedal has like a "dark chorus" quality to it. I could never see myself play happy stuff with it, but vice versa would use it everytime for darker/sadder stuff. The same is true for the Walrus Audio Arp87, another excellent (mono) delay for darker sounds. Whereas the Strymon Dig is totally that happy, U2 like Delay for uplifting stuff. They all evoke different feelings, and in my opinion that is a sign of quality - no one wants or needs guitar pedals without character! ;-)

@AllaboutafriendONLINE Hey, thanks for including the Nemesis in your shoot-out. I'm glad you like the pedal. I hope you find time to dive into the Neuro Editor options for the Nemesis - the good thing is if you can burn any sounds you create with the editor, directly into the pedal, either in one of the eight preset positions or onto one of the Effect Selector positions (the center dial). I think you'll be able to find the crisper sounds you're looking for in the Editor - also, for most of the more traditional delay sounds, the Intensity knob works like a Tone control, so that can brighten up the repeats as well. You are correct, in general we were very concerned with the Nemesis Delay's repeats sounding too bright, so it was specifically designed to shave off some of the top end on the default sounds. We like the "warmth" that is created with darker repeats, so that's what we were going for. Best regards - I look forward to checking out more of your videos.

Yep I got my Nemesis a couple of weeks ago and it really is a terrific and inspiring tool for the guitarist. The stock sounds are great and the editing on the computer is awesome. I am still having a little trouble with the app but I'll figure it out. I recommend this pedal to everyone. Also the buffer in it alone has really helped my tone out so if you don't use a buffer now try the buffered bypass mode.

Regarding the DD-500 volume drop, did you have it set to true bypass of buffered? You may want to try both to see if the volume drop goes away. Also, check to make sure the Output is set to "Stereo" and *not* "A/B Split". As for it sounding flat...well, yeah. It's going to sound as flat as your base tone. Some people prefer that and might even call that "transparent". As you went on to mention, there's all kinds of EQ and tone options, so that's where they come in. ;)

Great review! I've owned all of these aside from the Keeley. As far as tone goes, the DIG is king, while the DD500 sounds like a cheap Zoom delay pedal. The Nemesis sounds awesome (I didn't find it that dark), and is packed with features. I kept the DIG. It's not a one trick pony either. There's a lot of variations you can get with the repeats, and you can adjust the tone of those repeats. It almost feels like several pedals in one.

I might note with the Boss, it has tones of dual delay options if you use it in A plus B mode. Basically gives you the ability to run two different delays at once, (i.e. one tape and one analog), and you can set the subdivisions of each. (no percent of each other). If you like the idea of having two independent delays in one pedal, its a definite advantage of the boss over anything else on the market. Interesting that although the Boss is analog dry through, and the Nemisis isn't, you were left with the opposite impression using them. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, the nemisis does sound good, especially in stereo.
@MadebyMiike
7 жыл бұрын
Hi! It's great to know the Boss has this option, and (as I said), I like the basic idea of that pedal. My main criticism was the rather flat sound (although I bet that can be tweaked with the EQs). When the Dig is in one side of the "tweaking" spectrum (no options really), the Boss is on the other side ("you can and have to tweak everything to make it sound good"), the Nemesis being in the middle of those two. Having said that, I acknowledge that the Boss might be a great pedal, it just wasn't for me! As to the dry throughs, imho the only pedal that made NO impact onr dry sound whatsoever was the Dig(as seen in Sample 1). Followed by the Keeley. I am not really fond of the fact that the Nemesis turns your dry signal to digital, but at least it had a volume boost, not a volume drop as the Boss. Thanks for watching and commenting! Mike

You mentioned that the DD-500 sounded flat / boring. The way I see it, the DD-500 is similar to the RAW file in digital photography. If you compare the RAW file vs a JPEG file of the same picture, the latter will look more “vibrant” because it’s already processed, whereas the former (RAW) looks dull or ‘flat’ because it’s not yet ‘processed’. Thanks to the DD-500’s extensive EQ controls, you have more control on the sound of the delay (think ‘Photoshop’ vs a basic image editor).

Can't fully rely on your reviews here, mainly for the fact that you state in the very beginning that you played with 4 pedals for a couple of hours. That isn't enough time get fully knowledgeable on each. And every pedal will always have it's tweak. So you seems to make for more of good "first impression' review. You also don't describe your setup/chain, or how you have the pedals connected relative to each other. I do happen to agree with your conclusion among the four. Even though I don't personally own one, I'm very familiar with it. So that's me being super-picky observation. Overall, though, you did a pretty good job. Thanks for posting.

a subscriber here, so this is not a criticism but a question/potential deepening :) : I'm totally with you as long as the analysis is on the individual pedals, but don't you think that the less character ("jack af all master of none") in the Boss DD-500 could be a good reason under the voice "the right delay for you IF..." you make a massive use of effects (ambient, post-rock, shoegaze...), with DD-500 stacked with other delays like carbon copy, el capistan, modulated reverb ecc.. (all pedals with their own strong character)? Maybe in this case, for example, the dark voice of an analog delay + DD-500 is good as (if not better than) the voice of the Nemesis itself or an analog + Nemesis.

Don't obsess over true bypass - try turning the buffer on in the Boss unit. I would say that if your main purpose is to record, you're wasting your time with pedals. If you know how to run a mixer, you should know that you can use a delayed signal piped into another channel. (Aux out into ANY processor, then the output of the processor to another channel (or two,) on the board - bingo, you have control over the volume, panning, and substantial EQ if your mixer has it.)

You think the Nemesis is “dark” because that’s how you used it. If you learn to use the editor and controls properly, you can get bright happy sounds from it, too. I would disagree on the nemesis, it is bright sounding on most settings (actually too bright especially for the analog engine) and this seems to make it always get in the way of your playing. I am not sure if this has to do with the latest firmware (mine was already updated), or maybe you need to set the intensity knob completely clockwise which brightens repeats significantly. Please double check your settings for the nemesis and please inform me if you got it to sound bright. Thank you for the video Regards
@MadebyMiike

Hey. I didn't know there was a firmware update on the Nemesis (thanks for the info), will update asap. What I meant though, was it's basic sound. To me, it sounds as there is reverb or maybe even a touch of chorus on the repeats and/or the dry signal (not sure, but that would explain the higher volume when engaged). There's definitely something happening there. As I said in the video, to me, EVERY engine sounds colored (in a good, dark way), that's what I mean with "can't do glassy clean". But of course, your milage may vary. Thanks for watching, and thanks for the feedback!
@1979osos
7 жыл бұрын
Your can also set the output volume of the pedal (it should be at unity by default), also if you have the diffuse parameter on any setting it will smear the repeats and sound a bit like reverb.I would suggest you save your presets on the app, then do a factory reset (should reset any output boost in the process) and a firmware update. You can then reload your patches.I hope it works out for you.
