In DRC we cook it separately, as we have very hard beans so it takes longer to cook even if you soaked it at night Boil beans until almost ready put salt Fry onions till bit brown , add thyme, garlic, green pepper blend, add tomatoes (optional) then add boiled beans removing the soup of beans, can be added after frying Remember not to steer, the beans while frying otherwise you will mash it, just use the pot to steer Then cook rice separately Now dish rice, beans on top you eat just like that or eat with your stew or any meat of your choice It's better to separate otherwise it will be mashy and not that nice

It's good to use the bean stock. It makes the rice bean red and you don't have to use much tomato. Besides, lots of flavor in the bean stock. Soaking the beans gets rid of the gas as well. It seems as the beans swell up, the gases escape. If you are short on time, you can bring the beans to a boil. Cover for about 30 minutes. Throw away the soaking water or not. Then boil. The beans will become soft in a little bit over half an hour. Marie
