I'm glad you shared your story about your bull. It's so true they can be unpredictable. My brother brought a friend of his home from the army on leave and the fellow decided to go off on his own one early morning to walk in the fields. As he had arrived late the evening before, no one had had the chance to warn him where he shouldn't go. He was about 30 feet into the pasture when our old Hereford bull saw and knew he was a stranger. I'd just come on the scene in time to see him clear the top barb - wire of the fence, a good 5 and a half feet above the ground, with that bull huffing on his backside. That bull had covered a good quarter of a mile judging by where the cows stood. Lucky he was fit enough to escape the bull because he was roaring and tearing up the grass on the otherside, showing what he meant to do to the fellow. It made a huge impression on me. I was about 13 at the time and I walked that same pasture daily to catch my horse and I'd always seen him as a big lazy slow mover who had no interest in anything but cows and grass. He was shipped shortly after. Our next bull was a beautiful Hereford with a thick growth of curls spilling over his forehead and he loved to have it ruffled. He had to be brought into the barn during haying season as we ran tractors in and out all day, and the gates around the barn were left open most of the time and he hated the tractors. One moonless night, he got out and wouldn't you know it, the gate to the road had been left open. He roared down the road to the neighbour, who wasn't a farmer, just lived in a pretty house next to the river. He had just bought a new car and 'General' was huffing and polishing the paint on this car, tearing up the gravel as he repeatedly challenged it. My Dad, who wasn't much of an animal person, took up his rifle to go take care of the issue while we huddled, sobbing about our 'cute' fellow's end in the middle of a dark night, waiting for the rifle report. It didn't come. My father had walked down the road with his rifle already loaded and ready to shoot. He said he could clearly see the bull's head in the starlight, his white curls easy to see. But when General saw him, all the rage melted away and he turned into a big puppy dog, eager to show off his new 'toy'. My Dad couldn't bring himself to shoot him. After a few minutes of showing off the car, General quietly followed my Dad back home to the barn. We kept him another year until he wasn't useful anymore as he would be covering his daughters we'd held back as replacements but the gates were always double checked in haying season after that. One of our dogs was taken by a dairy man and it died saving that man from his bull. It had him pinned on the ground, broken several of his ribs when Bear managed, through biting it's face and legs, to get the bull to go after him instead, allowing the farmer to roll under the tractor and escape the corral. You only need watch a few bucking bulls to see just how athletic a beast bulls are and they are never to be trusted. There is a KZitemr, Justin Rhodes who has bull and only 1 or 2 cows. He has sweet, hard working young kids that handle the cows, and I just can't watch anymore. He has had little to no experience around cattle and feels he must have the bull to get calves and therefore, milk, I've suggested AI, but he persists with his pet because he doesn't know when they are in heat. They are stanchioned everyday to milk and it would be so much safer to just follow their basal temperature. I hope they remain safe.

That bull encounter would scar the devil out anyone ! ! No wonder fewer farmers keep dairy bulls to breed their cows. Think that there are children on some of those same farms and they could be in danger everyday. I’m guessing that bull was dehorned. Congratulations on the twin calves, your care and your sanitation. Best video ever, has everything I like. Thank you for sharing. 🐄🐄😷👍

There's a video on youtube called mickey moo attacks. It's about a Canadian who 'rescued' a holstein bull. It shows him stroking this soppy (!!!!) holstein bull, but at the end there's some text that says the bull later violently attacked its owner and nearly killed him. Surprise surprise that says it all.

Never ever turn your back on or trust a bull no matter how quiet you think they are. You were very lucky that you were young and fit to get out from there, these stories need to be told as a warning to what can happen because we all can be complacent sometimes, and as you said it only takes one second for someone to become a tragic statistic.

The bull must have been jealous of what you’re packing 😉 in all seriousness the hair stood up on my neck when you were telling that story thank God you lived to tell the tale. Your poor father must have been traumatised watching it happen. We had a huge black limousine go like that.. he flattened me twice flattened my uncle and I got him to come after me again so everyone else could get out he got me as I got to the gate but thankfully I’d no serious injuries I was 19st playing rugby at the time and thought I was strong but I was like a new born baby compared to the strength of him. 2 hrs my neighbour chased him around the field in the tractor to tire him enough to get him into the pen. That bastard was dead about 3 days later up in the middle of the field, man I was a happy guy my father tho was pissed because he was to go to the factory the next evening. I’m convinced something popped in his brain to make him change from been docile all his life to in the blink of an eye as you said a killing machine. Anyways loved the video and stay safe.

Good to hear your story of the bull and how you have learnt from it and recovered. Without sounding patronising I don't think people from any walks of life appreciate a bull or even a cow when it comes to behaviour. I work on a bull stud so have seen what a mad bull can decide to do, but until it happens to yourself or someone you teach you' never understand how quick they can turn. Thankfully never seen personal injury from one but have seen them turn in the blink of an eye. I like watching Farmer Phil videos but when I see him with his family doing jobs with bulls in the dark yard and race system with no safety engineered into the system it just looks like an accident waiting to happen. Which would be a terrible thing if only to learn from it after the experience. Take care

I was so scared, I thought I was going to die that day, however I never saw the fence so I thought it was going to get me and I saw that he stopped dead on his tracks... New subscriber watching this video and what I see I love your content. I'm An old city girl just buying meat at the supermarket but have for years watched farming vlogs across the globe and realise what goes into farming through the seasons and years. It is not easy, what you cattle/sheep/grain etc: go through to produce the end product is incredible.! I myself totally agree with your bull misfortune when you were young. Every Bull even when mild has the capacity to become aggressive at any stage on the farm. Their primary job has always been to defend their gals and breed their gals. Keeping bulls seperate until mating time works a little but mother nature has other ideas. God bless.

Glad to see livestock in the natural outdoors with room to move about and fresh grazing with space to spread out. You are the exception. Hope this continues to produce more. We have lost too many farmers with factory farming, and animals suffer and people left without an income and way to make a living that have the heart to do it. Guess there are dogs that help you bring them in at the end of the day but not seeing them yet. You are one healthy guy to get all that exercise every day.
