Thanks for all the computer videos Uxw! To be honest I did not know anything about a computer about 2-3 years ago but after I saw your videos I learned quite a lot. After watching your videos I grew motivation to buy a broken computer. I diagnosed it, fixed it, and sold it. This was like 2 years ago though. Anyways keep on making these wonderful vids!

It's a miracle that the machine is right there on your desk. Most Pentium-90s vanish in a flash of blue light when they hit the 88MHz mark during POST. Then again, dude, you got a Dell. Maybe they're different.

Lately I have been thinking about building a server with any of these fan-less atom processors because I want a quiet machine. But after I watched this video I'm happy to know that I may actually find something cheaper that can do the same job. I know it is going to be hard to find something like that, and even if I do it, it might not be as quiet, but it doesn't hurt to try! Thanks for video!

Top of the line once upon a time. I purchased a Dell XPS P100c back in Sept of 1995. Quick specs: Pentium 100, 32MB EDO ram, 1.6 GB hard drive, SB AWE sound card, 28.8 kps modem, 6x TEAC cd-rom drive and a 17" Dell branded Trinitron CRT monitor. Grand total $3500, not a bad machine overall however it suddenly died after only two years of use.

I found a Dell-OptiPlex GX-260 at the Salvation Army for $14.95 Last Monday. Pentium P4 (2Ghz), 256MB of RAM, 20GB Hard-drive, on-board Video. It had Windows-XP-SP2. I formated it with GParted, and installed Puppy Linux Lucid Puppy "Finlandia" 5.2.8+500. Runs like a charm. So you can get a PC cheaply if you just hunt a bit...I'm using it to write this post.

Good point about the laptops. I actually have a Pentium 4 computer that I'm saving for later use. I have a Celeron (800MHz I think) that is working as a torrent machine, and working pretty fine. The thing is I usually stop everything its doing when I'm transferring files over FTP because it makes the processor go all the way up.

I've seen some set up so the OS is loaded onto a smaller 2GB partition, then it loads the disk overlay through autoexec.bat so the operating system can use the disk space even though the computer cant see it. it makes more sense to have it in the MBR so it can see it without having 2 partitions.

This takes me back. My first computer which I received in 2001 while not a Dell but rather a custom made one from a local computer shop, it too was equipped with a 90MHz Pentium processor. It also had 32MB of RAM in it. Although my computer was definitely a lot louder than this Dell since the CPU did have a little CPU fan on it and the hard drive was a Seagate Medallion with a huge 600MB capacity. I think that's what was the loudest part of the computer. Windows 98 would've been the last official version to run on the computer with the system requirements, requiring 66mhz to run. Windows 2000 would've installed despite requiring 133MHz minimum but Windows Me would refuse stating it requires 150MHz to run although now I know there's a switch you can use to make setup ignore the processor speed, not that anyone would want to run that trash.

When these machines were new, were they meant for home use or business/office use? I'm referring to this particular model. I used to have that same exact Apple monitor, until presumably the analog board circuitry or something of the like went bad and I completely lost blue from it. I just got the P75 version of this system, without the C. It's 1 generation behind on motherboard, with the Intel Neptune chipset. It's actually an Intel reference motherboard which is nice. This tool-less case is rather nice, and it vaguely has that Mac clone feel. Probably because clone makers like UMAX and SuperMac bought cases from the same company that made this line of Dell case! I rather like these very old Dell systems. Very standard systems, nothing really custom. It's a nice change from more modern Dell.

uxwbill. I like how you come across these computers. Like telling a good story at times. :D I know for sure over here for driver purposes that may no longer be available directly like in this case for this dell. I had found a polace on the net. Called Driver Pack yo'll have to google it and see their website. it goes under a different name. But tbey have an ISO containing almost every driver imaginable for the windows environment. I used them about three times when I couldn't get the computer hooked directly to the net via the networking card that was either built in or installed in the PCI slots. But this ISO had found like every driver for my old windows 2000 machine. including the networking card. I think they may have checked the chipset when running to see what it had against the ISO. And installed it. The only complaint that I had when I first ran it was that it installed a whole bunch of bloated stuff. The second and third time whan I had used it on two other machines. I found where you could deselect the bloated stuff and just load the drivers that was needed for the other two. Could be useful if you want I could send you a private email or chat and relay more information so you can bring it up if you find it useful to your audience as well. Keep doing a great job there uxwbill I like our way of presenting these computers.

+Karl Entner Dell has maintained the availability of drivers for almost everything they've ever sold -- clear back to the time when they were known as PC's Limited. Of course, not every computer or hardware devices is like that and those that aren't in business any longer certainly can't support their products. Driver Pack might be great. I've never used it nor heard of it. And as with any third party providing device drivers, I'd be very cautious about any potential malware issues, of which it certainly sounds like there are some.
