I just bought the Dell g5 5590, 144hz, 2060 rtx, i7 9750. I played 2 games, and ran msi program to test temps. Swtor in a space battle, I ran avg of 72-75c max I think was 78c Cod:me 2019 I ran for an hour, and avg was higher of course 78-85c, high of 95c. Not once did I go over 95c though that was the max. I will undervolt it today or tomorrow to see what the difference is. What I did find interesting though was, I have an Acer it 2.3ghz, gtx950m and from feeling the heat with my hands physically, comparing the two laptops the Acer sure seemed to run a lot warmer, so much so that I could have used it as a mild hand warmer on the Acer. The Dell just didn't seem to blow out hotter air than the Acer did even with way more beefy hardware. I never took a heat reading off the Acer so all I am comparing is what I physically felt blowing from the laptop. The Dell ran I'd say at best luke warm feeling where as the Acer was more a hand warmer feeling. I've heard and seen in KZitem videos that the 9750 does a much better job at volt throttling vs the 8750 by from what I recall 8750 20-25v and the same thing on the 9750 was 17-20.Maybe that's my difference on my end As I said though anything helps so I will definitely undervolt it very soon. Update: I did some undervolting (-110) and temps are better. With swtor, warframe and gta5, I run an avg of 70-73 celc, and my max is 86 celc, I've never gone over that yet. I also ran prime95 on max heat/stress and also peaked at a steady 86 celc. So yeah, compared to the 95-100 it was it's definitely better now. Just an fyi in case your curious, I lose zero performance or fps in games, so it's a win win no performance loss and lower temps.

@fahrikaka
5 жыл бұрын
I personally agree with Matthew here though, 16gb is plenty for today games and almost definitely for the future as well, having 2x8gb would boost the performance a little bit. Sure its nice to have 32gb of ram but i think its not necessary, it would take a long time until games uses more than 16gb of ram and i doubt the 2060 will be powerful enough to play demanding games when the time comes, and it would be not ideal to use the laptop for color sensitive work which i think would benefit hugely from 32gb ram since the panel is so mediocre. And those temps dude, hell i'd stay away from this laptop.

@@bowsarbrowsar3136 I paid $1600 for Lenovo Legion Y540. My soul purpose to buy this laptop is gaming. RTX's Ray Tracing technology is still at an initial stage. RTX 2060 is anyday better than GTX 1660ti. One more thing to note that the desktop RTX 2060 is superior than the laptop RTX 2060. The difference is 30% in performance. If you compare laptop 1660ti to RTX 2060, I would always choose RTX 2060 over 1660ti anyday. If you get an i7 9th generation with 1660ti that is also a good option you can consider. Mine is a i5 9th generation with RTX 2060. I would still suggest you to do your research properly and take your time to make your purchase decision. Matthew. The biggest issue with this laptop is that it is running single channel RAM. Your benchmark numbers are too low. Throw in another stick of RAM (and change overwatch scaling to 100%) and you will see much better numbers. Also you can reign in the temps using Throttlestop. I got it to peak at 89 degrees and average 79 degrees. I agree, we shouldn't have to jump through hoops to get this thing working right, when I bought mine it was a crazy $1800. Hopefully Dell will listen to you and make some changes.
@MatthewMoniz

Totally! Another stick of RAM would help for sure and of course undervolting. Most laptop enthusiasts will do this but most people 90% of them are regular consumers and it bugs me that this happens to their expensive products. Love your channel by the way!

@@MatthewMoniz thanks Matthew, that means alot to me 👍. Yes, I have had so many people complain that they are not getting the performance they should. I just had one with someone only getting 50 FPS on BF V (no Ray Tracing) on his 2080 laptop. He has single channel. These OEMs will just end up getting more returns and damaging their reputation. We need to point these things out to them. Bob and I did with Gigabyte and they now offer a free RAM upgrade.

Great channel and I love your reviews! I'm trying to choose between G5 (144Hz panel definitely!) and Y740, however I'm really concerned by the heating and fan noise issues, even though I like the design of G5 a bit more. With Y740 I'm concerned with a battery capacity and a HUGE power brick, also not sure about the screen - any idea how it is compaged to the 144Hz in G5? Assuming the similar specs, which laptop would you recommend to go for? The key criteria for me are: heat, noise and screen quality (not listing battery life as key criteria but still expect it to be adequate even though it's a gaming laptop), probably keyboard/trackpad as well. The anticipated usage scenario for the laptop is more office productivity + gaming eventually. On a side note, do repasting and undervolting completely solve main G5's problems? Thanks in advance for your detailed feedback.

I have not play over watch yet cause i dont plan to purchase for the game for now lol. p/s: i did repaste for cpu and gpu with 2019 mx4. Put in some new thermal pads. I undervolted and kept the setting always at -0.115V. The fan is quiet loud, but of course the performance is incredibly good. That was all at optimized. I bought a g5 5590, 9750h, rtx 2060 16gb (2x8 dual channel) and 512gb ssd n.2, and 144hz refresh. While yes I will agree it does get a bit heated, the fix I found was to undervolt. I undervolted mine too -110 and dropped all cores to 3.8ghz. The only real way you'll ever get max GHZ is it will raise a single chip speed to max. So this is why I only leave one CPU at Max. With undervolt I ran prime95 on max CPU stress and the max temps I got hovered at 86c. That's a lot more acceptable then 100c is. I run avg of 73-78c on temps most times. Let's also keep in mind that so many times we compare laptops to desktops, that's an unfair test regardless of what the test is. Everyone knows a desktop will always, always beat out a laptop, even if the desktop has slightly lower specs, the desktop will always win. I whole heatedly believe that laptop parts are made differenly than desktop parts, and given the fact laptops run hotter, they build the parts to better tolerate or handle that heat, so even if a laptop is running at 90c it's better able to handle the heat and it's not as huge a deal as people make it out to be. That's just my 2 cents. This is not a bash session just my observation over years of PC's and games. I personally think at what I got this laptop to run at heat wise, I'm very comfortable and happy with it at those temps. Just so people don't think I'm crazy with the 2x8 dual channel ram here is my laptop. www.microcenter.com/product/607325/g5-15-5590-156-gaming-laptop-computer---black I also got a killer deal on it. I paid $1120 for an open box, which happened to be a dud, so I took it back, they said they would exchange it out for no extra cost for a brand new one. So I actually got a brand new laptop for$1120. I was very happy.

I went with the G5 SE because it was the only one with these kind of spec at the $1000 mark, and it has a thunderbolt port. There were other laptop I was considering but none of them have thunderbolt. I would have to go up a tier in price to get thunderbolt. After a repaste and a little undervolt, it's running great. Temps barely reach 90. I got the newer 9th gen i7, its incredibly easy to to lower the temps on this thing. I spec mine with the RGB and fingerprint reader and 90whr battery. Upgraded to 32 GB ram and now I have no regrets. And yes, mine has the RTX 2060.

I got the new G7 it varies between certain games but I've watched the CPU go between 65-80C normally as long as the fans are kicked in. Sometimes for some reason I'll see it jump up to 100C when I start a game and the fans aren't going full speed like it takes a few moments but once it kicks in it seems to keep it 80C and below. I threw a Samsung Evo 970 Plus 500 NVME in here along with a 2nd 16GB RAM stick and pulled out the 5400RPM HDD for a Crucial 2TB SSD and I'm loving it so far. The screen could be better though that's probably my only complaint, it does get bright though and looks good enough but I can tell its not up to par with like the Lenovo Y700 laptop this one replaced but I'm loving the gaming performance I'm getting.

Well said Matt. I think due to CPU development hitting a plateau with generational gains coming from thrashing the silicon for a slightly higher clock speed with the resultant increase in heat means laptops just cannot handle high end mobile CPU's. This combined with a strong drive towards thin and light are seeing gaming laptops becoming a joke all over again. A small form factor PC with a portable monitor is starting to look a far better option for low mobility use cases.

just curious to know, in Dell Power Manager - Thermal Management - keeping the Setting to Cool Option rather than Optimise Option, will it reduce heating issue or not?
@StickerzinhoPT
4 жыл бұрын
The "Cool" Option, limits CPU and GPU performance making it run cooler, but performance is reduced. The best option to cool your components is the "Ultra Performance" option ("Optimized" option is the same as "Ultra Performance"). If you want unlocked performance but less noise, use the "Quiet" option. This will make your components run hotter making them thermal throttle.

Dell allows too much wattage drawn from their 8750h. I’ve seen these shooting to 80w. They run hard but they run hot. They need to take this down to around 45 or 55 and then when the CPU was under load by itself allow it to pull about 60. Sure we can do this on our own but most will not

Undervolted mine at -0.140 using throttlestop. Never touched turbo limits. I usually work with all kinds of demanding 3d software including autocad, 3dsmax, corona renderer as well as sketchup, photoshop and gpu demanding lumion. all works fine for me with cpu temps never getting higher than 90 degrees at full load (4GHz for multicore load). Gpu also gets around 75 degrees max. Games like RDR 2 demand even less so I don't think that would ever be a problem. If you're experiencing any thermal issues with this laptop you can always ask me.

Dell has a few issues ... main one being improper thermal paste application. You can also drop the temperatures by undervolting the CPU... however, if you only repasted the CPU and GPU with say Kryonaut (for example) or GC Gelid Extreme, you'd experience about 10 degrees Celsius drop in temperatures. Undervolting alone can get the temps on the cpu down by about 10 degrees Celsius and it will be able to boost/maintain its advertised clocks properly... however, DELL did not take into account Intel's tendency to consume A LOT more power than what its actually rated at (the TDP is mainly for the BASELINE clocks... with boosts in place, it will draw MUCH more power) - that's why the temperatures on the CPU are so high - mind you this is not so much DELL's fault as it is Intel's. Intel should have told DELL that the CPU actually consumes more power at boost... and if they've done so, then maybe DELL would have designed better cooling for the CPU. However, the DELL G5 15 SE 5505 (AMD 4800H and RX 5600M) version seems to keep within 85 degrees Celsius on both the CPU and GPU when they are stressed (but the fan noise is relatively loud as a result). Also, when DELL tested the 4900H in the same unit, the CPU/APU severely underperfomed compared to even 4800H. This indicates to me that DELL did not really design proper cooling for 4900H, and because they have a bad thermal paste application history, people who get DELL laptops would likely be advised to use a better application of high quality thermal paste such as GC Gelid Extreme or Kryonaut to get better performance and lower temperatures.

i got my g5 from costco during the holiday season for $1,100. the price was not bad but after using it for a few weeks i found it a bit slow especially when i had 20+ websites open in the background while playing a game on steam. part of it was the high temperature. another reason is the m.2 ssd. i still can't believe that dell uses a dwarf 2230 m.2 in this g5! after cloning the original toshiba 2230 512 gb to a samsung 970 evo plus 1tb with a copper heatsink attached, it runs much smoother and noticeably faster now. my knowledge in pc is below average, but i do know that after the above upgrade the machine runs better and quieter. another disappointing fact i found out during the ssd installation is that this generation of g5 has a long battery. i don't know how many hours it lasts in reality with a full charge since mine is always plugged in, but i do know the battery is physically longer than the previous gen's. there used to be a place for a 2.5" drive at one corner near the ssd. now with this battery that spot is gone. so, i don't think this laptop has much storage as it can only use a m.2 ssd. any upgrade to expand the storage will be costly. and now i have a 2230 m.2 ssd that requires an external enclosure to run. only had i known earlier...

Intel say the CPU is ok at this temperature however the SSD starts giving up before that & fires off 'Cannot find operating system' etc. Tried a fan assisted cooling mat & fked the CPU fan which I then replaced myself as I don't have the patience for a Dell turn-around. Disabling Intel Turbo Boost in the bios helped but that pains me as its a feature that I have paid for. Steer clear - really disappointing rig & now I'm stuck with it for the next 2-3 years.
