Some notes from someone who had a build like this for more than a year. First off, you really should either buy a semi-modular or a fully-modular PSU. There isn't a lot of cable management in these cases so unless you're good at managing cables, there's a chance that it'll look like a nest of some kind. Do not settle for 8GB RAM. That is not enough for modern games. If your VRAM is 4GB or less, you need at least 16GB of system RAM. Be careful when ordering RAM for these PC's as sometimes you will need specific DDR3 memory sticks. SSD's aren't just good for gaming. You will notice a significant increase in application load times as well as file transfers. If possible buy a system with a tiny 128GB SSD, then purchase another 500GB SSD for games. The OS/apps will take up a decent chunk of storage so the extra space for games is needed. You may want to consider the pros and cons of building your own computer vs buying and modding one of these. They perform very well, but tend to have various issues due to the motherboard being old and designed for office purposes. First off, there aren't many settings in the motherboard for gaming and you may find out too late that the PC doesn't support UFEI which can make installing windows a pain if you don't know how to flash the ISO as MBR. There are also various driver issues with these old systems and they cannot be fixed without tearing out the faulty MB. You might suffer frequent USB errors and have your devices disconnect constantly. You may also have crashes due to driver problems or even memory failure which can only be resolved by purchasing expensive kits that are made specifically for the Optiplex you bought. Airflow in these cases is also terrible. You may need to keep the side panel off in order to maintain good temps and let me tell you, these systems are LOUD. Another gripe is where some models do, quite a few don't come with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi built in and you will need to use faulty/slow USB Wi-Fi sticks. Something that may or may not be obvious is upgradability. You may never be able to upgrade your CPU down the line. These boards tend to only support a small number of processors. If you are looking into getting one of these, be on the lookout for terms like SFF (Small Form Factor). Those are to be avoided since they barely leave any room for moddability. Go for Mid-Tower or higher.

I can relate to this having a 7010 with a 1050 TI. I have the side of my case off right now.. I suppose if one was handy the could drill a big hole in the side of the panel and install a speaker cover on the outside covering the hole. I also can only go as high graphic wise to a 1650 super.

Hey PC Tech Hustle, with your experience with Dell machines, how about a video on the Operating Systems and how they are tied to the mother board chip set. Basically, I bought an older Dell with a Windows Vista OS and I've struggled to remove and install another OS. Also, somehow it seems that the OS number on the sticker on the case is "tied" to the reinstall disk that came with the PC. If you buy a used older Dell without the reinstall disk and you want to install an updated HDD, how to you install a new OS?
@PCTechHustle
3 жыл бұрын
I may consider doing a video on doing an OS install. The easiest way to wipe and OS is to reformat the drive and reinstall from a USB key. Microsoft makes it incredibly easy now to create a bootable USB. Many times too if you have an activation key from windows 7 you can use that to activate windows 10 so long as they are the same versions (Home, Pro, etc) and the motherboard is the same. I many times will do that if I have the original sticker on the case. You can even take keys from other machines that had windows 7 on it if you didn’t need it anymore (maybe from like a laptop) and activate windows 10.

@@PCTechHustle I personally recommend the Mid Tower ThinkCentre models. They only require the adapter and work well with GTX 1060's. The case swap is also pretty simple the only thing you lose is the front panel audio since the connectors are literally in the way of the PCIe x16 slot. Strongly advise cutting off the little plastic lock springs on the PCIe x16 slot as getting a GPU in and out of that slot is rather difficult with the lock still in place as it's intended to run low pro even though it fits fill sized cards. The card I have in the system I made has a backplate and it fits VERY snug to the RAM slots. Be advised some cards should have the backplate removed because some wont fit. Tested with a 1650 as well. Worked fine.

building a very similar PC for my cousin. he doesn't have a whole lot of money so I'm cutting a lot of corners with this build. sticking with the i3, adding a 120GB SSD and a Quadro 2000 GPU (it'll do the job, he's not playing too many demanding games anyways) and 6GB RAM. would have been 8GB but this 3020 uses 2x2GB sticks and we could only fit a single 4GB stick into the budget. either way, 6GB should be enough for the games he plays. picked up the optiplex for £64.50, the GPU for £19.95, the SSD for £16.99 and the RAM for £7.95. so about £110 total.

Optiplexes are not the only PC's to do a build with. For people trying to do a build let me just say $225 is simply unrealistic in most cases and this is simpy due to shipping/Taxes and the ungodly inflation on the prices of Optiplexes due to Covid-19 and the people wanting to get into gaming. That said You can use other systems such as the HP 800 g1 elite desks, which aren't the first thoughts in peoples minds, but you can get them for cheap with i7's and throw in a GTX 1650 all for $275-325 depending on where you get the parts. Quick set up get the HP literally plug in 1650 in within 5 min you're off you don't even need experience the card fits right in and works immediately

Question bro, you fit all those games on the storage you had for this video? The 500gbHDD and 240SSD? Amazing Video. Love all your videos bro. I'm asking because I'm torn on storage on my future build, I'm thinking I need like a 1tb m.2 and like a 500gb SSD Sata and maybe a 2tb HDD. idk just a question
@PCTechHustle
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I did fit it all. Combined storage is about 750gb. I didn't like having to put Modern Warfare on the spinning drive but I had no choice. Storage really just depends on your needs. For new build budget systems in the $500-1000 range I typically recommend a 500GB SSD or Nvme. Usually 500GB is plenty enough to fit a couple big games and the smaller ones too with some spare space. Though if your budget can allow if I would suggest just bumping that drive up to a 1TB so you don't have to worry much ever. If it's just a gaming rig I can't really see it needing more than just 1 drive. That said you can start small too and just add more drives if you need it, or just take the plunge and buy big once,. "Buy it nice, don't buy it twice" ... as they say. My personal rig for example has 4 drives though, a 500GB NVMe boot drive that I like to keep clear of clutter, a 500GB Nvme for video editing as a scratch disk, a 1TB spinning storage drive (now going away due to my NAS being operational), and a 4TB auxiliary storage drive for project work video editing software cache. Though my use case is not just gaming. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have further questions. Thanks for watching. as always!!!

I have not heard of anybody having problems. The biggest problem I have ran into is it seems maybe some PSUs don't like the adapater. I am sure that has something to do with the internal pin out of the adapater. My AresGame PSU did not like it but the EVGA PSU had no problems. If you are getting an error on bootup then that typically means one of a few things like no fan, thermal sensor detected.

Hey, I’ve been using an optiplex built for a while now, looking to upgrade soon however. In my entire time using it with a bronze rated 500w psu the adapter has been great, no failures or anything(however I did go with a 10$ one on Amazon as opposed to one I coulda got on eBay for like 4$, figure it would be better quality) also I used an adapter for the dell cpu cooler pins, works just fine, pc booted up as normal without me having to do anything special. I would like to add that some low profile or just like power efficient gpus may not even need a new psu(even though I would consider it because these machines are so old) these machines can be great value for the money if you can find a running optiplex with a decent i5 or i7 for like 100-150$, I got one with an i5 4590 and put a 1650 in it and can get 144 frames on rainbow 6 siege, ~100 FPS on fortnite, at lower settings. Would recommend for a first time build

I have a Lenovo SFF(i53470) and it has a proprietary 14pin instead of a 24 pin so I will also be using a 14 pin to 24 adapter similar to the 8pin 24 pin adapter you used in this video . What psu do you think I should get so that my motherboard gets stable power ? And do you mind telling me what exactly went wrong with PSU that u had to change it.
@PCTechHustle
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks!!! For some odd reason the AresGame PSU simply did not like the 24-to-8pin adapter. While under load it would just shut down. I have no explanation but it did not happen on motherboards either traditional 24pin motherboard power connectors or on the EVGA PSU. Some kind of strange incompatibility that you wouldn’t run into unless running an adapter it seems. As for budget options I would look toward what I have e recommended in the past being EVGA and Thermaltake (also linked in the description), which should be a good power fit for you as well.

I have been considering this dell optiplex 9020 with 16GB RAM and 960GB SSD and i7-4790, Intel HD Graphics 4600 would that run fortnite and apex without mods on low settings or do you recommend a better graphics card

I would recommend getting a GPU. The onboard graphics will be an awful experience. Aside from that the rest of that system is a great start!
