I have my M1 Mac Mini (base 8/256) hooked up to my Vizio E60 E3 in my bedroom. the TV sits at the foot of my bed on a wide dresser. I also have the LG 27UD58-B (purchased in late 2017) on my desk that sits next to my bed. The LG is still going strong with no degradation in picture quality or performance. I switch the Mac back and forth depending on work or play. Monitor for work and play. The Vizio for Media consumption and play.

@@Ben-tt3cg I've been using the Dell for a month now. It's a nice monitor. The lack of a speaker has been a little challenging here and there. The included USB-C cable is on the short side, and you can't use any old USB-C cable to connect it to a computer. To get a longer cable, you need to drop like $65+ for a Thunderbolt USB-C cable.

thanks for the video Ben, it's is what I wanted to know, but there are some other things to mention, for example in terms of price for the LG, there are some slight deference in between the Ultra-fine, based on my research, the ones that have 90 or 96W output delivery will be more expensive than the 60W, the good thing about the Dell is that uses the normal power cord, no adapter needed, VS the LG that uses the adapter which if it was damaged then it will be like $100 to buy a new one tho, also LG iguess has a split screen between the 2 HDMIs? like if you wanted to display to screens in one,

Thanks for this amazing review! I am also torn between these 2 monitors, so extremely helpful for me. One question : I saw that your Dell U2720Q OSD shows Color Input as RGB. How did you accomplish that!? Many people seem to be getting YPbPr with M1 + Dell. Are the colors as good as those output from older Macs (and possibly from windows systems)? Thanks in advance for your help on these queries!!
@b3naqua

Thanks Amit! Glad it was helpful for you! Weirdly, the Dell lets me select sRGB under color > preset modes > color space, and then RGB under input color format. It's glitchy tho, cuz sometimes when I click input color format, it defaults to YPbPr, then if I select RGB, the entire screen turns pink. Dell knows about this issue and apparently is working on a fix!

I had the Dell 2720q and replaced it with the 32" LG UltraFine when I switched jobs. I think the picture quality is comparable with both. The swivel arm on the LG is a big benefit and the 90 watt USBC charge is a benefit for the Dell. It's important to note that with the Dell, you can only choose high speed USB 3.1 OR 60Hz refresh rate, not both. That was a big downside to the Dell.
@b3naqua
3 жыл бұрын
Good info! Yeah, I noticed the USB rates go down to 2.0 when on 60hz, which sucks. I think the same thing happens on the LG 27 inch, too, when using the M1 via usb-c. On your 32 inch LG, do the USB-A ports retain their faster speeds when using usb-c?
@dcallan1

@@b3naqua Good question. I haven't tried. I switched to a higher wattage notebook XPS15 that required a docking station. Now that I know the LG does the same, I presume the limitation is a result of the bandwidth of the port.

They are similar because practically every popular IPS monitor on the market is an LG display. Dell's ultrasharps have been built around LG panels practically forever. Same goes for Apple displays. Since the Dell mentions DCI-P3, its probably based on the newer panel LG uses in the 27UP850.

Awesome! Yah, I like the Dell’s side USB ports a lot! Do you ever witness the extra USB ports stopping working w the computer plugged in via usb-c? It happened again last night and was fixed by unplugging the computer from usb-c, then plugging it back in. I wonder if it’s an M1 issue or an issue w this monitor?

@@b3naqua I have a 2nd monitor with DVI, an Apple Cinema HD and until I got it on the enduser Beta RC2 version of BS11.2 a couple days ago, I was unable to use Apple's HDMI-DVI adapter; I had to use a 2nd party USB-C to DVI adapter. That killed 1 of 2 USB-ports. As I have the 8/256gb version, I needed an external USB-C SDD for my 200 gb of photos as I found it took up to 47 seconds to open the photos app via my external USB-A HDD so I got a Sandisk Extreme E61 HDD which took the opening of the photos app down to 3 seconds but that killed the 2nd USB-C port which meant the Dell U2720qm monitor had to be connected via HDMI and I couldn't use the downstream hub built into the Dell monitor; thus I haven't had much experience using that hub. I did try to connect the SDD via the hub but speeds close to halved on the SDD so gave up on that and started looking for a good Thunderbolt dock to get more ports but found they cost a fortune. The issue is now under control with BS11.2 as I have regained the port using HDMI-DVI to the Apple Display and USB-C to the Dell and the spare port for the SDD so now I can use the Dell hub but so far so good.

@@NavarroOne thanks for the update! I've noticed really slow read/write speeds on my external SSD (ravpower portable 1TB) using the Dell as a hub, but the same thing happens when using the LG monitor. I was getting like 35mbps on the 500mbps SSD on the Dell, which sucks. Not sure what causes this, but it seems like when using the main usb-c port for the Mac, the monitor reverts the usb-a 3.0 ports to usb 2.0 speeds?

@@b3naqua I get 820/670 MB/s from my Sandisk Extreme Pro (E61) according to 'Blackmagic' when connected direct to my Mac; this is nominally a 1.050 MB/s drive. When connected to the Dell hub, I get 350/310 MB/s so there is clearly a delta between the ports; however the slow speeds you are getting ((I don't know the raw power but I assume it is nominally a 550 MB/s like the older Sandisk Extreme Pro (E60) is probably down to your menu choice on the Dell. You can choose "Display -> USB-C Prioritization -> high data speed which is 3.0 and if you choose High resolution it is 2.0. You have to shut down the computer, activate the input source menu on the Dell, press and hold the CHECKMARK key on USB Type-C input for 8 seconds to actually change the mode. by the way, anyone reading this who have the Sandisk Extreme Pro (E81) with nominal speeds of 2.000 MB/s and the Dell U2720q monitor, I would be very interested to hear if you get higher speeds than the 350 or so I am seeing

@b3naqua
3 жыл бұрын
Yes totally! I play Switch all the time on my monitor and it works fine. Only thing is these monitors only support up to 60fps, so more demanding FPS games might look choppy/not as smooth. I’d go with a gaming-oriented display for consoles, something that supports 120fps and above.

As an LG UltraFine owner, I really appreciate using the USB type-c connector for my MacBook Pro. Charges just fine as expected, but being able to plug in a USB Logitech webcam on the display, and have that automatically be connected to my MacBook is pretty slick. When I'm mobile I use the built in camera, but when attached to the display, again with USB type C, you instantly get these other peripherals connected (and powered). Pretty nice feature for a single cable to my MacBook Pro.

You need a monitor calibrator when taking about image quality. That way you can figure out which screen is the most accurate. Find deltaE and real life contrast ratio. Not just what the tech spec is saying. Otherwise good review!

From what I’ve heard , 5k 27 or 1440 p 27 are best cuz 1440 is native for mac and 5k is a 2x upscale . I’m planning on getting a 32 or 27 inch 4K soon cuz 24 inch 4K is quite small for a UHD panel with not too many high quality options . I’ve tried pairing my mbp with a 4K 55 inch tv and it’s not too bad
