Description
Delphi was an ancient Greek city where the most important oracle of the ancient Greek world operated. The city is mentioned from Homeric times under the name Pytho. At the beginning of historical times it was one of the cities of ancient Phocis, but gradually the role of the city was strengthened and it developed into a pan-Hellenic center and a holy city of the ancient Greeks. It was also the center of the Delphic Amphictyonia. Delphi maintained its important position until the end of the 4th century AD, when the operation of the oracle was put to a definitive end by decree of Emperor Theodosius I. In the following centuries the city declined and was finally abandoned during the period of the Slavic raids.
