Interesting this particular MD-80 has the flood light switches on the pilot's side instead of over on the first officer's side grouped with the wing/nacelle, anti-collision and position/strobe switches. This is actually the only time I've seen that. I wonder if Delta had their cockpit panels specially designed for that.

Cool cockpit but LOUD! Sounds like a Hoover is running in there. That would drive me insane after a while.

Jeffrey Kumjian most in service in the US are 30-35 years. Although any time you board any flight look at the metal notice in the cabin exterior door. It will have the date the airplane was built. Most 737s are about the same age especially on southwest. More of the same aircraft in a fleet is cheaper to maintain. Also most are leased from private companies for decades and then sold to foreign carries with lax safety standards.

@@tucker4182 Are they still safe too fly in?

Jeffrey Kumjian of course. Especially domestic airlines. I’d stay away from any in less safe regions. The US, EU, most first world airlines are perfectly fine.

I flew on one that was 29 years old a few weeks ago. Great aircraft, felt very safe.

That's so sad. It's a very utilitarian setup, mechanical engineering triumphing alongside electrical. So many thoughtful elements to the controls, and it looks like they can take some abuse and still fly for a couple more decades. Personally I love these planes and would rather fly on them over a Boeing or Airbus any day. They give the passengers a real seat-of-the-pants feel and it's like you are a part of the whole experience instead of just being there.
