Dino, You saved me! When you were showing the valve you showed me that there's a quarter turn to lock the 2 halves together. I was flummoxed as to why my cartridge wouldn't go into the valve! When you explained and showed how there's a turn to lock them The Heaven's opened and angels were singing your praise! Thank you seriously!

Dino, thank you for this video! I had called my plumber to come fix it - he took a look at it and said he would be back within the week with a part, then came down with pneumonia. The thing was leaking like a sieve! Looked up the leak and I had the exact leak you spoke of. Following your guidelines I was able to repair it myself rather than waiting for my plumber to feel better! Not including drive time to the "Big Box" store, it maybe took me 20 minutes to repair and the store had the exact part I needed (no searching). Thanks again!

You are the MAN! The only part of the repair I was worried about was removing the crusty set screw without stripping it. I call your back-and-forth move “The Wiggle and Jive” move! I used a little rust inhibitor, let it rest for half an hour, and did the Wiggle and Jive. Bingo!

Delta makes enough different variants of its monitor faucet to drive you crazy, but Mr. Pinch made clear that adjusting the "stop ring", and installing the handle have to be completed with the water supply turned on. So I took a shower to complete the final steps to repair the Delta Monitor handle for my shower. His clear explanation really helped.

I replaced my Delta Monitor cartridge using this video as a guide. Less than a year later, my brand new cartridge was leaking again. My problem is iron buildup on seats & rings. This time I ordered rebuild kit RP28603 from Amazon. It worked for the price of $7. Dino makes a good point about why a pro would always replace the cartridge. But the home plumber might want to try the rebuild kit first. If you are paranoid, have the replacement cartridge on hand, in case of unforeseen problems.

Thanks for the video! If anyone is, like me, finding this because nobody has a video specifically for the Delta Monitor 1700 series, the main difference is that your installation might have a brass retaining ring around it that is very hard to unscrew unless you have a strap wrench. Also, it is worth immediately replacing those springs and black rubber washers (Delta's document in the replacement kit does call them seats) behind the cartridge at the same time.

Ive done Drains, Dishwashers, Washing machines, sinks, toilets, hot water tanks... But never one of these guys (always dealt with the Hot & Cold Faucets). So it was quite Intimidating... But... Just did this one myself :D Part was 20 years old (1400 series RP19804). Took off the 'Vanity Plate' to keep mind of how hard I was sawing the handle off (face it, the likelihood of it actually Unscrewing is next to zero) by looking at the piping movements (Things can bent, break, etc) if your not holding the pipe assembly steady. (New Handle, I know... 15 bucks more to spend :/ ) The Bonnet Nut was next, not a major challenge (luckily for me), just patience. Then out comes the Cartridge, right? HA! f***ing just separates into a good 3 dozen pieces. It was hell digging it out (the most time consuming part of the repair). But once it was out, cleaned, the replacement Cartridge lubed... Damn! Night & Day difference! Like brand new! All thanks to YOUR wise words guys. I appreciate the (passive) help you gave me on the project. :) Wife is happy too. LOL

For those who are bashing Dino on what he charges, here are some things to think about since we seem to live in an age where some people are overly judgmental without using their brains to think first before commenting. This guy is self employed. He pays for his own gas, truck, vehicle maintenance etc., and a new work vehicle after so many years. That is not cheap! This guy has to pay for his own health insurance for he and his family most likely. This guy has to pay for replacement of his own tools and repairs of some tools used. This guy has to pay for his clothing, that he probably only wears on jobs like this. He is not going to wear nice clothes. This guy has to make a living still to pay for his own personal vehicle or vehicles for his family and kids, and school, feed him and his family and on and on and on, and pay taxes above it all. So yes he is going to charge a certain amount for everything, LABOR, he has to do for anyone. They in a way are paying for convenience. "They don't want to deal with it". They have to money to spend so they have someone do all that for them, because they can afford it. That is how anyone would make enough money to make a living. Same as you working for a big corporation, but others complaining about how much your corporation charges them for this and that. You see you are no better right? Some people have more trust in a handyman, that they know most likely, than hire a commercial company to do the same thing for them at a higher cost most likely. In all a plumbing company most likely would have charged way more for what he did for them. Here's an example of an overcharge in my experience. I got a $800.00 bill from Roto Rooter for hooking up the plumbing to my sink, garbage disposal, and dishwasher after a new counter top was installed. The guy was here 30 minutes! Let's say I had a long talk on the phone with them. Got it knocked down to $400.00 and that was still a lot for what was done. You learn who you hire. I sure did. I would have happily had a handy man take care of this for maybe even cheaper on my end. You live and you learn.

Gosh dang I had the hardest time getting that old cartridge out, it just wouldn't budge, fought with it for more than a half hour. After it was out the new one went in kind of tight at first but finally got it. Forgot to read the instructions as it mentioned on the new pkg figuring what is there to read as you're just replacing the old with the new but after installing it and trying it out I noticed there wasn't any hot water just tepid water. On the new Delta replacement they added a hot control feature noted in the instructions so all I had to do was just pop off the handle by unscrewing it and turn the little adjuster counter clockwise to get more hot water, no need to turn off the main water again to make the adjustment. To sum it up I hope I don't have to try pulling that dang thing out again, worst experience ever in fixing a faucet leak. :-(

#Joseph Cunningham, you should heat the nut up with benzomatic torch, careful not too hot but get the temp of the nut up to 250 deg, the reason heat works is the nut will expand a few thousands of inch, enough to easly come of, heat works for all nuts every time otherwise some penetrating oil, let it sit few days,, wack the nut with hammer, careful not damage, but impact may "break" hold i am comfortable with heat doing the trick, thanks for watch, thanks for comment, let us know how that works

Whoever designed the Delta Monitor shower valve deserves a real kick in the seat. I only have one installed in our apartments. I'll never, NEVER buy another and, if this one was not behind tile, I'd rip it out, too! Heres what happened: tenant complained about low water flow. Valve was about 5 years old and I considered that something had gotten jammed in the body. Opening it, I found some sediment, blew it out and reinstalled. No improvement. I bought a replacement valve innards kit and installed it. No improvement. That meant the obstruction was between the valve and the tub faucet. The feed to the faucet from the mixing chamber is partially occluded by a tube riser that leads to the shower. The clearance on either side of the riser is only about 1/8" at the widest point in the circular arc. I pulled apart one of those finger operated "grabbers" to get a more or less stiff wire that I could shove into the clearance and worked it back and forth like a sewer auger. Ah-Hah! Success! I put back the original valve body and the valve now has plenty of flow. - - (PS -- I just bought a Kingston Brass valve for another apartment. The flow path appears much better and that valve innards are much less complex than the Delta. Hopefully there are no problems with it that I won''t know about until is is installed!) Jay

They don't choose to pay this obscene amount. They really have no choice. If she knew how to do it herself I'm sure she would, but has no choice but to call a lying, cheating, manipulating, tradesman. She "chooses" to have her plumbing repaired or replaced to get back to her life and not have to worry about it, but unfortunately, that requires hiring these people who take extreme advantage of everyone. As I said before, making a living is one thing, but to charge so much extra is my issue.
