My 'old man' worked on the Deltic testbeds at Dick Kerr's Strand Road West Works in the mid to late 50's - he was quite excited about the DP1 and the 55's - thinking it darn right shameful that the ECML got the whole package! Meanwhile, across the road in the East Works my future father in law was helping to build the Canberra, Lightning and bits for the TSR2 - meanwhile Sir Tom (Finney) was showing his magic touch up the road at Deepdale and I was at school - exciting times in the city of dreams! Alas it's all just a memory now. Thank heavens for KZitem and all the enthusiasts who bring back such wonderful moments.

The fore runner of things to come. Looks so cool the shape, the streamline effect, a bit like the first generation airliners with thoughs cab windows and windscreen. They always never fail to impress even now. Ground breaking stuff!

Great memories as a young lad of seeing this loco roaring through Lichfield and Tamworth on WCML; it always caused a buzz. Happy days! Can anyone provide a bit more info, eg; There are two small 'eyes' on either side of the whiskers; were they lights and something to do with train description? Presumably, the fitting on the nose is a headlight; if so was it ever used?

If this helps, the headlight just below the cab windows actually didn't have lights in it at all! The "Eyes" were the main source of light and were arranged in the 'express passenger' headcode, and could be switched to either white of red. Or so I've been told.

English Electric toyed with the idea of offering the Deltic for export. Had it have done so, the DP1 would have served as a demonstrator. The big headlight housings atop the noses would have been fitted with US-style headlights or Mars lights (a warning light with a mechanical motion used by some North American railroads at the time). Of course, that never happened, so the DP1's housings were always empty and production Class 55 Deltics never received them.
