DeMar DeRozan currently leads the league in drives per game at 11.7, and is currently second in the league in free throws made (407) and third in FT’s attempted (486). Factoring in his 23.3 points per game, placing him 9th in scoring, that means he is attacking the basket at a very high, albeit very deliberate, rate. He’s improved greatly in all aspects of his game, and that’s resulted in 2 All-Star berths in 3 years. He even has a Team USA nod, and a Gold Medal from the 2014 FIBA World Cup to add to his ever expanding accolades.
The one aspect we’ll be focusing on today is his footwork. Euros, spin moves, drop steps, reverse pivots, pump fakes and step-throughs, this ravenous raptor has it all. He has even made it a habit of jumping off of the wrong foot in order to keep defenders on their heels while he explodes to the rim. He can finish with force or finesse, but pay close attention to how he times his steps to get to the rim. He strides and slides through defenses, sometimes even splitting them with his fancy footwork. This was a genuine joy to work on, because you know this guy watched all the two-guards that came before him: you can see Kobe and Wade in his pumps, pivots, and fades, Manu and Harden in his euros and unique off-foot finishing. Hopefully he watched a lot of MJ, but you never know with these younger guys. Anyway, he's clearly watched a lot of film, and it was fun doing just that for DeMar.
