I had, and still have the 1010 since they first hit the market many years ago. I loved it then and I still love it now. It's still used a LOT in my recordings. I'm looking for a JV-1080 now but they seem hard to come by.

Their sound is a thing of beauty, and I could not be happier with my JV-1080. I had no trouble finding my JV-1080, but at the time new analogues were all the rage and ROMplers were frown upon. Nowadays, digital is having a comeback, and the JV series is again in fashion. I think the JV1080 is the most common synth from the JV line (in terms of units made), but I wouldn't part with mine and most of the other owners of the JV-1080 share the same feeling. That being said, if you have JV1010 in good working order, just wait a little bit... a JV1080 (or even a 2080) might become available in the near future. ;) I hope you get your 1080 soon. Cheers!

Hello Rick! These editors are getting relatively old, but they still run (sometimes you'll have to adjust the compatibility mode settings). I think there is also a java-based editor that would work on novel computers, but I never found a bona fide source to download it. As for the synth itself, it is a nice secondary unit (or even a main sound module for a live performance). Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Cheers!

I don't know if I just can't remember how to use my old gear, but I can't get my JV1010 to play back my midi sequences from years ago. I never actually used the JV101, just bought a couple of them. For my live performances I used a JV1080 and I ran all keys and synth sounds thru out puts 1 and 2 in stereo, all drums in stereo out 3 and 4, my bass sounds out 5 and a click out of 6 that would go to a monitor. This way I could EQ the bass with more oomph and add some punch to my kick. I made my midi sequences more raw with less production that the demos, and I could sound more like an actual band, playing my guitar and singing to the songs. I guess I just assumed the JV101 would at least playback my sequences and access the 1080 sounds but just go out the 2 outputs. But I can't find much information on using it with a sequencer. I'm still using an old WIndows XP with Cakewalk 8. It works great with my 1080. But the 1010 I get drums and everything else is a piano sound. Does anyone know if I'm just not doing something or does this thing not allow for the type of playback I'm wanting? Thanks.

I have a JV1010 and I set it up to make complete songs I composed at the time which I still have recordings of but I don't remember exactly how I did it. I play them now and I realize the tracks need to be remixed because I was not too good at it then but I don't have the tracks anywhere on anything I'm using now so I think it's a bit like the situation you are describing. I have forgotten what I did and cannot find anything but the final recording.

Hello my friend! Yes, it is a great little music box. I also have a JV-1080 (in fact I'm selling this one because I haven't used it since I brought home the latter). Very good video and demonstration! Can I change the sounds while I am playing on stage through the midi controller directlly? Need some favorite or bank editing? Big hug! :)
@Philipplus
7 жыл бұрын
Hello Vicente Casanova. Thanks you for your interest. The JV-1010 can receive Program Change to change the patch. Indeed you need to specify the bank and the patch number, but that isn't too difficult. Now, regarding changing the sound in real time. There are a few parameters associated to MIDI CC messages, although this may change from patch to patch. For example, CC70 usually controls the filter Cutoff. There are also some CC controls for the Envelope levels and time. More complex sculpting of the sound has to be done using SysEx, which is usually better for changing the patch rather than doing real-time adjustments. Anyhow, you can check the real-time editing capabilities in the MIDI implementation chart (www.gmarts.org/data/jv-midiman.htm). I hope this helps. Cheers!

Philip, I just got one of these, is adding an expansion card difficult?
@Philipplus
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon. Actually, it is pretty simple: just unscreww the 6 screws (I think they are 6) that hold the metal plate on the top panel. The slot for the expansion cards will be just beneath it. The card can only fit in one direction, so press it gently and then twist the 3 plastic spacers to lock it in place (before inserting the card, make sure the orientation of these spacers matches the oval-shaped wholes in the card). Two words of caution: a) Handle the expansion card with care, as they can be damaged by static electricity. b) Check the condition of the electrolitic capacitor in it (the bigger metal cylinder on the board): if it appears to be swollen or rusted, have it replaced (it is an easy task, but you'll need a matching capacitor and a hot air gun & solder for smd components). Also, the JV-1010 already comes with the Session I expansion board included in the "Session" bank, so do not buy that one. I hope this helps. Cheers

@Philipplus

Hi! Yes, you can do that, indeed, I do that in the latter part of the video using the RM1x as the sequencer. You need to be in "Perform" mode, and select the instrument for each channel, it is relatively easy to set up if you have the preset list in hand. I hope this helps. Cheers!

Philip+ Thanks for the response! Now I have another problem lol so I have different synths on different midi channels. I don’t want the jv1010 to play on those channels. Again thanks for any help!
@Philipplus
5 жыл бұрын
Hello @@yrureadingthisname On the JV-1080 it is easy. On the JV-1010 you cna use an editor to program a perform session with only some MIDI channels active. I'm not sure if you can do this from the front panel, but page 44 of the manual shows you how to adjust the volume of each individual part on a performance, so you can mute the part receiving on the channels you don't want to be played (it will still use some voices on the polyphony, though). I hope this helps. Cheers!

@Philipplus
4 жыл бұрын
Hi. You can set a different sound for each part, but as far as I can remember, each part had its own MIDI channel. Some MIDI controllers will allow you to layer the sounds by sending the same note to different channels, but I don't think this can be don on the synth side with this device... It's larger brother, the JV-1080 can merge different parts on the same MIDI channel, though. I hope this helps.

I use a Focousrite Scarlet 2i2. The line in on the motherboard's sound card is not adequate for recording music... they are far too noisy and prone to clip and distort. There are excellent 2 channel audio interfaces that can be used on a home studio, such as the 2i2, or the Behringer U-PHORIA UMC22. The latter is usually sold for less than 50€ so it is a good entry-level. In my case, investing on the 2i2 was one of the best decisions I made when starting using hardware synths. I hope this helps.
