Work of art that chimney...possibly six sided and banded horizontally as well as vertically ...with reducer steelwork at the top.Skilled design and extremely skilled to build it .Our heritage lost in an hour

Although it's not possible, I'd love to see a time lapse (on a tripod) along with a handheld camera close-up of this huge chimney being built. The skill of laying all those bricks, erecting the scaffolding, the logistics of delivering all those bricks and cement higher and higher as the chimney was built, and the application of the external banding since it doesn't appear there's any reinforced concrete. Also, I was thinking it'd be neat to have some of the guys who built this, on hand to watch it torn down and see their reactions, but then I read where it was built around 1900 soo..... so much for that idea. Can't imagine being that high up in the air on a rickety wooden scaffold on a rainy, windy day laying brick, but those guys did it somehow. Respect to those bricklayers. These huge, old chimneys are quite the engineering feats.

cal raines. .. Yes his story was amazing, but no different to all the other steeplejacks who used to work around this Country. He only became 'famous' due to a TV producer living nearby, and as ever they were looking for something 'different' to make a series out of. He was lucky as what he did, and the way he did it would not be allowed today, H&S would step in straight away and stop his methods. As for his steam vehicles they were a bonus for the TV, as loads of people had exactly the same things preserved - even then. I have a friend who knew him and he said unfortunately like so many people with a bit of fame, he got rather big-headed and didn't want to know most of his old friends, which to me is rather a sad thing. As an after thought most of what he said was written by a television scriptwriter and he just spoke what was written for him.

Waste of time? Do you think Fred turned up and the chimney just fell down? There were days of prep behind the fire method and even then it took longer than this to come down once the fire was lit. Added to which, knocking it over spreads the debris further for the cleanup. This took an hour to achieve, how could it be a waste of time?

Why on earth didn't the demolition fellow just topple the tower instead of forcing the metal dragon chew it to pieces while it was standing instead of if it was laying on its side?!?
