Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) of Phoenix, Maryland, USA (acting as Explosives Subcontractor to Main Demolition Contractor, Environmental Remediation Services, Inc. (ERSI), of Syracuse, New York) performs the preparation for and successful explosives felling of the BL England Generating Station Chimney in Beesleys Point, New Jersey on Thursday, October 26, 2023.
As a third and final phase of CDI’s structural felling operations for ERSI, CDI felled the 463’ tall, 49’ 6” diameter reinforced concrete chimney that supported three reinforced concrete flues at the breaching level. A total of 240 lbs of explosives were loaded into 417 holes CDI crews drilled into the heavily reinforced 2’ thick concrete shell. The direction of fall was ensured by ERSI’s installation of remedial reinforced concrete into preexisting openings in the structure, allowing CDI to fell the chimney with precision, avoiding splash of debris into the waters off Cape May and the operational switchyard adjacent to the fall path for the structure.
