I always thought the rain effect in Valley of Defilement was meant to be like a hazy rain. You know, when its raining but its so thin that you barely feel it, it just kind of makes you humid, and you cant see the raindrops clearly? Like halfway between a drizzle and fog?
@iWillWakeYouUp
10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's possible. I always thought of it as nasty water haze "rain" dripping down from the cave... or maybe the humidity is so high that it forms water droplets. Anyway... I imagine the valley of defilement to be extremely uncomfortable. It's wet, it stinks, it's hot and cold - depending on where you are, it's poisonous, and it's dangerous. Having that mist-type of rain would fit in such a location.

@tudormiron15 Sweeping attacks are for preventing players from dodging by running to the side. If a game wants to force the player to dodge or run away to avoid the attack, they should make a sweeping attack. Not an overhead attack which has the enemies spin like they’re on a record play. Soulsborne games were better when they adhered to the laws of physics, as that made the game rewarding for interpreting the moves in a logical way, as well as more immersive.

On the topic of ng+ cycles getting harder and harder and the devs not being able to test infinity. LobosJr did an "infinite ng+" run in Dark Souls 1 where a modder made a file that kept the ng+ cycles past ng7 scaling up by 6%(the amount already in game, just stopped at 7) He got to ng+18 before even the hollows in the Asylum were one shotting him, and he was adequately levelled and geared up. He had to cheat engine himself to ng+69 to get to his goal ng cycle after around 5, seven-hour streams at ng+19. At ng+69 even chip damage through shields is lethal.

The giant depraved one thing seems to be done with a neat trick that messes with your eyes. The hole in the wall looks smaller than it actually is because it's far away, and the depraved one fits perfectly in that small hole in the wall, it already looks smaller than it is because of it being far away, but the way it fits in the hole probably messes with you as well, giving off the illusion that it's normally sized. This is all speculation, though, I don't know dick about the technical side of optical illusions.

I thought the depraved was big, because from across the bridge, he's about as large as your character. Which shouldn't be the case, cause you see the regular depraved from a distance and they're considerably smaller. Then again I work as an artist, so perhaps I'm more likely to notice these discrepancies. It was very surprising to me that Matthew even brought it up, since to me, it was so intuitive that the depraved was bigger.

One thing I would like to add about Demon's Souls is its atmosphere compared to Dark Souls. In Dark Souls, it's very much drab, bleak, and depressing the whole way through. Even Anor Londo has this going on, since the place is completely empty and dead. Demon's souls, on the other hand, has this feeling of the ethereal and otherworldly. I think Miyazaki aimed to make it more fitting with the "souls" than anything else. After all, you're just some ghost in Boletaria, trying to escape purgatory.

Just finished watching through this video, and it's doubled as my first watch of a full Demon's Souls playthrough as well, and I enjoyed every bit of it. Really fascinating to see a game that spawned such an iconic series be structured, designed, and laid out so much differently that the games that followed it. The actual tangibility given to Boletaria in general vs. Lordran's "time/space is distorted," the demon's souls being semi-defined as currency/powr, and the use of an "old one" well before Bloodborne was conceptualized was a highly unexpected real breath of fresh air. As always your points and comments about game design are things that resonate with me a lot, whether I agree with them or not. I also just have to point out how much I loved your Old Monk bit as the capstone to your melee > magic running gag, all of that was just pure comedy gold and had me in stitches. Honourable mention going to the Dragon God bit about living on the edge and not playing by Miyazaki's "rules" followed promptly by a roasting. My only point of contention was an almost total lack of the Nexus being shown in the video, as well as dialogue with NPCs, but those are both things that I can easily accept as both "not in the scope of this playthrough" and "reasons to play the damn game myself." Well done! Moving on to your Dark Souls one now.

I really like how you approached many of the levels from the eyes of a first time player, while generally taking on the bosses at your best. It just goes to show how each level is really a long lesson before a test of all the player's skills. I really love this interpretation of the souls series. Thank you!

I just watched this video in its entirety in between work and was digesting your points by osmosis in a way and I found it to be an excellent listen. I won't focus on one of your many points but I found much of what you said applicable to a wide variety of games - I've found a degree of respect for DS's development team and the individual you mentioned (I forget his name) who had the philosophy you commented on. His attitudes to the unintended shortcut and the predicament with the cars were actually something that were brilliant to transition to a game.

Shrine of Storms isn't medieval, it is pre-medieval, possibly middle-eastern or slavic. There are no dragons, knights and priests in there. The ancient burial ground populated with dead barbarian warriors and old pagan gods. And crows.
@codythompson9973
4 жыл бұрын
@RUBY DA CHERRY noop9k does have a point though. It is ancient from even the time period of Demon's Souls. You also have a point as well. But, maybe the medieval weaponry there is from adventurers traveling the ruins (shrine) and getting killed? That is my guess. I am simply saying both of you have a point. (This last paragraph is directed toward the original commenter): Also, this is a commentary. I am sure there are plenty of other slip-ups in this video (if this even can be considered a slip-up). Still an amazing commentary in my opinion.
@Garviel-Loken
4 жыл бұрын
I know this is really late but the medieval period of history (from the 5th to 15th century) was in fact global. Shrine of storms does not have a middle Eastern aesthetic as the were not building castles and keeps in the same way Europe did. From an architectural standpoint it's very medieval. Very little about this area suggests the east. Also dragons are fictional and your idea of "medieval" is dungeons and dragons. Barbarians and pagans are a very western.

Demon's Souls remake/remaster would be nice. Tidy up the WT system, maybe add some cut content like the 6th archstone, fix drop rates and guarantee one of each through fixed method per playthrough and mildly revamp summoning. I say mildly because they will more than likely include password matching retroactively for better or worse. New Game+ scaling also needs serious work.

I agree whole-heartidly on the stamina bar and balance being the biggest asset of the Souls games. A lot of these additions and small touches went right over my head when I played Demon's souls. I was somewhat anxious about the game as a whole, and everything seemed so daunting at the time. I think the game becomes extra frustrating for less than skilled players, because of how it punishes you in loss of souls, loss of full HP, loss of used ressources etc. Although I don't feel the same now, at the time almost anything in the game just filled me with dread, and at the same time the will to proceed further despite what seemed like horrors at the time. I don't know why I felt like the game was so difficult, i see now that alhough it's difficult it isn't the mountin I used to think of it as. Other things that were weird for me to get used to were the cryptic info in all aspects (weapons-ugrade and utilization, story...), the very notion that you could hurt an NPC (accidently or not) and they'd be after you among several other things that were hard to initially wrap your head around. Demon's souls is a pretty interesting game with a lot of great aspects imo, I guess I simply didn't have the capacity to understand the better parts about the game first times I played it (I migh've been too young at the time).

I was really hoping he'd do a video. It's cool to see someone's thoughts about a game but I definitely come here for the whole package. To put it in his own words, these videos are more than the sum of their parts. The commentary and critique is only one part of it. That said, I think I understand why he never did one. Probably doesn't want to get stuck in a niche where people just follow him for one thing (that is, fromsoft games).

46:06 This right here is one of the facets of Dark Souls 3 onward boss design that I really don't like is that they DO get that tracking, sadly. Yeah, a lot of people were just strafing around bosses, but a more natural solution is to give bosses flank / rear attacks to force players to react to different attacks, as opposed to making their frontal attacks have massive tracking. It really makes a lot of bosses feel samey, and removes a lot of the fun about learning quirks of a boss fight since now you're pretty much, as stated, being forced to do the intended option only.

I just commented on this as well. It's gotten to a rather ludicrous point with elden ring now. Makes me wonder if what people were attributing to Miyazaki's early "genius" was more beginners luck/ not knowing how to code. (In the combat aspect)

Was so fascinated by your enthusiastic commentary for this game that I borrowed a friend's PS3 just to play this, having previously completed Dark Souls (brilliant) and Dark Souls 2 (disappointing). For me, Demon's Souls is somewhere in between the other two games. The highlight of the game for me was the Level design which is simply fantastic in its use of looping shortcuts. But there were several design gripes I couldn't shake while playing through. 1 = The obscurity of things like Crafting and World Tendency was really annoying. I still don't fully understand both even AFTER looking up the wiki, that's how convoluted they are. 2 = The Healing System, after playing Dark Souls, it just wasn't as good (poor players will resort to grinding, while good players are left with an overabundance of healing items). 3 = Balance issues, I almost gained more Souls on Level 4-2 than the rest of the game combined. I was gaining more Souls for defeating about half a dozen enemies on 4-2 within 10 minutes than I was defeating several hundred enemies over several hours on levels 5-1 and 5-2 (and level 4-2 was not notably harder). Overall enjoyable, but I think having so much of the game levels open from the start really hampered the developers ability to balance the difficulty all the way through. Then again I am a cautious and wily Souls veteran so maybe I should have played this game first rather than last. Good commentary.
